shouldn't there be more supermen from ethnic minorities?

dami wilson
I think it's a bit lame not having a chinese superman or an Indian superman from Krypton. Are they all carcausian on Kypton? Hmm, I think in the new film there should be a bunch of travellers from Krypton who had gone on a long voyage (star trek ?) when Krypton was destroyed only to come back to find no trace of their planet. This brings them to our universe which they want to conquer!

Now that would make a new superman film cool as he would be out numbered but maybe have other friends who could help him like Thor and the Hulk? HA! What a twist! mad stick out tongue evil face smokin' rolling on floor laughing wink

eleveninches
err...
Kryptonian IS an ethnic minority

DarkCrawler
By the twenty-eight moons of Jupiter, you are not making any sense. Hulk and Thor are from different company. And I think all the Kryptonian's had the same skin color...it was not Earth...

Draco69
Oh yeaaah, let's be completely political correct and make a chinese superman, a hispanic superman, a black superman, a filipino superman, a native american superman, a gay superman (although Apollo is), a hindu superman, an egyptian superman, a greek superman....

Please!

whobdamandog
I understand what dami means...he's essentially saying that most comic book characters..especially the ones that are all powerful..are generally represented as being white males...

...It does say something about our culture if caucasion males are predominantly used to represent the most dominant/powerful heroes....

Most of the times minorities/women in comics are represented as being second teir characters..having lesser abilities...and their stories always are based on some sort of racial/ethnic stereotype. Their names usually contain some sort of silly reference to their respective race...(ie "black" lightning) which usually includes an equally ridiculous catch phrase("Sweet Jesus"<--Luke Cage)

Their definately is more diversity now...but there's still much more that needs to be done to represent other types of people in comic books...

Draco69
There's a lot of powerful superheroes of different races:

Storm
John Stewart
Coldcast (He beat the crap out of Superman)

From http://www.blacksuperhero.com/exhibits.html

Draco69
Hey, Sentry's on that list!. There we go, we have an ethnic Superman. Happy now?

Mainstream
Isn't Steel kinda like a black Superman..sorta kinda maybe.

Napalm
Im not racist or anything But I kind of think superman should stay the way he is

DarkCrawler
Of course he should stay in that way.

DarkCrawler
This was done by the way, in one of the old Superman films.

Napalm
Im sure there are black and mexican kyroptonians and all but superman should be white

radioboy121
If you want an ethnic Superman, you can always buy a foreign Superman comic and it can give somewhat of a new impression.

Namor was drawned very Asian looking in his earliest comics, especially when they found him in full-fledged beard when he was hiding his identity.

speiderman
I think Superman should be black.

Draco69
He is. They call him Steel.

speiderman
Shaq as superman.. lol that was so goofy. I mean someone who is actually badass.

speiderman
Like Mike Tyson as Superman.

dami wilson
God frobid! Mike Tyson as superman! ESSSH! Who's Steel? Never heard of him! All this names you quoted ! Never heard of them! Are they DC comic heroes cus I'm strictly Marvel! Marvel for life and thats why I stopped reading DC cus it was still catering for kiddish themes. No disrespect but people mature.

I dont know any famous ethnic hero apart from black panter, storm, that funny guy in avengers (his costumes a big joke!) then where are the chinese guys anyway? I thought we'd have a martial arts expert who was American chinese like Michael Chang the tennis player a while ago? Hey, America's changed a lot since 1789.

I just wondered why the man of steel (DC) and Wolverine (Marvel) are both Caucarsian). Where are the Indian or European dudes? Hmmmm
Marvel's International aint it? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

radioboy121
Steel came in during Superman's resurrection. He was one of the foursome taking the mantle of Superman. He was a construction worker saved by Superman in the past and he felt after the Doomsday crisis to do his part for the community. He had an "iron-like" flight suit and carried a large hammer.

For Asians, there is Shang-Chi the martial artist, many Hand byproducts (Kwannon, Reiko, etc.), the Silver Samurai, Sunfire, etc.

Native American - Forge, Shaman, Thunderbird, Warpath, Cerebra (X-Men 2099), etc.

Europeans - some of the defunct Excalibur, including Nightcrawler and Captain Britain had European origins, Hellfire Club has a European group, etc. I think Wolfsbane is too (she had strong Scottish upbringing, but I'm unsure where she was born).

SpyCspider
Just a curious thought. Ever wonder why the the original creators of Superman and Batman (so-called 1st-tier heroes) had them resemble Caucasian males with black hair, rather than the stereotypical "blonde-hair blue eyes?" Cuz I'm confident if you ask most non-Caucasians, when they think of Caucasian, they think of "blonde-hair, blue eyes, tall, etc." Almost an old-Disneyeque portrayal of the hero that rescues the damsel in distress. Was it because the creators wanted their heroes to be AMERICAN; hence, a character that was a result of the melting-pot that defines the U.S.? Therefore, he could relate more to a wider audience?

When I think of American heroes with blonde-hair blue eyes, I think of the way PATRIOTIC heroes were shown, ie. Steve Roger (Captain America).

I apologize if this is a touchy subject, but I wonder just what made the original creators go with these characteristics when they decided to make their icons.

WarriorAngel8
My God whoever said Green Lantern isnt white really pissed me off im sorry to say it, but he's white. That STUPID cartoon made him black to be politically correct and make people happy. He shouldnt even be recongnized for that cartoon. He's one of my favorite comic book characters and he's not black. I'm not racist or anything, but he was white and should stay white! mad

Draco69
Actually there IS a John Stewart in the comics. He's been around since the late 70's. And we should have diversity on the team.

moviejunkie23
i think blade should be white, i feel like thats racist to make a black day walker and not a white one.

David Duchovony
Well if you want Blade white, Spiderman should be black, wrap your habituated noggin around that.

DarkCrawler
What? What the f**k?

Read your comics better.

anarchynerd
yeah sorry, bro, john stewart is a classic character. if you wanna read a great story with a black green lantern, pick up the cosmic odyssey trade paperback. its got some early pencils by mike mignola. dont expect stewart to end up saving the day though. man, thats a fantastic ending no matter what color you are.

as far as making characters ethnic just for its own sake, i think its a mistake. when you start pressuring people about it, you end up with duds like samurai, apache chief, and black vulcan. seriously, if you think about it that way, wouldnt you rather wait for a good black character than have a dozen unspecial ones churned out?

did you guys like 100 bullets? i only read the first little bit. all that slang was annoying for me. not to discredit the creators, cause ive read some of their stuff i really liked to. but what did you guys think?

anarchynerd
my point is, we shouldnt get the comics industry thinking "ok black character, black character, whats a good idea for a black character?" because it will end badly. they should be thinking about making good characters, THEN decide what their ethnicity happens to be.

didnt i read a black firestorm in a wizard preview a while back?

anarchynerd
aw, hell! sorry to respond to myself like this but i almost forgot! i just read the new black panther # 1, by john romita jr and the guy who wrote the movies "house party" and "boomerang." it was fantastic. thats a black author and a black lead who is so tough it hurts. he isnt a superman, but his african culture is super intelligent and seriously, it is a wicked tough book. you guys should definitely read it if you havent.

dami wilson
bLACK PANTER SUCKS LIKE A WATER MELON! I read one of it's stuff back in the 90's late 90s and there was one where he had beef with the goct of the USA and said he didn't want to associate with the Avengers cos of it n I thought that was lame and dumb!

What was he doing in the =AVENGERS if he had so much loyalty to his govt or country? He shouldn't have been in there in the first place! Making him some kinda Prince was lame cus he'd be back in his country than the Usa.

Who is the White panta if there is a black one anyway? I just wanted to see more asian and European superheroes than I've been reading since I was a kid! Captain England would make a good debut and battle with Cap America for his shield! Ha haha. Spiderman should have a cousin in Norway whose blond and blue eyes and definately alwways has a beard! Call him the bearded spiderman!

Whoa, I want to apply to Marvel right now! They need some new inputs!

DarkCrawler
Black Panther is awesome. Read the new series.

And the Marvel will...probably call the police.

dami wilson
HAHAHA, that s not funny dude! Black panter thinks he's cool and all taht but I haven't seen him taken on any great villains except going back to his village and beating a bunch of herds men to retain his kingship! They need some one more cunning1 The black samuria or
Black sholin TIGER would be good!

pr1983
dude, quit this bloody rant. there are plenty of heroes from different ethnicities, making a hero black or asian or whatever simply for the sake of political correctness is a joke...

dami wilson
I never said they should do that! Never said it and wont say it! If you dont understand my mail, dont read it! I wondered why there weren't other heros from other countries and that includes other white populated countries dumnb ass. Yeah, I said minorities but caucausians are not the biggest population on earth in case you haven't got your statistics well! The chinesse and the indians are! What I meant was why are they all American? Ok some dude said I should go to another country and buy theirs! But isn't America struggling to spread the message of democracy to the rest of the world? Dont they have Chinese, Indian, British , French (they got Gambit in Marvel) and so many other ethnic people from Europe (the Irish, Italian and so on) living in the US?

I meant most of the heroes are all Americans and white Americans but when they now send soldiers to places like Iraq, I'll tell you they got all races there! Two of my cousins are in IRAQ fighting for the US govt dog and I pray they're still alive! And they aint white! They are proud to fight for their nation just like every other American! The comics should reflect that more! If they do , cool, dont give me grieve with your low IQ! Stuff it up your intellectual thinking pad! Hey, Marvel and DC sell in every nation around the world! Europe too! So why dont they just seel in the US if you want me to go to other countries to find a european superhero! They sell all over the world? Dont they? dont pep talk me dog! Some of you guys just fail to read the emails well then get all confused!

dami wilson
DEAR PR1983
So why cant we have German superheroes or spanish ones living in America! We got so many different races in America! Never heard of a puerto rican super cool dude? Anyway I thought DC and Marvel are multinational companies now? They've branched into films and fashion and so on so what's your beef?

I still want to read about a Captain British in New England in the USA! And he would be white with a cockney accent with a bow tie and hat and a walking stick! He'd be dressed in Black and a white shirt and would work for the British secret service! If they can have Chatla or whatever his name is from Black panta, then we can have a British super hero operating even in the states!

Yes I said superman was only white but were they all caucarsians on krpton? Is that why it exploded? One race of super beings? And why if most super heros are in the states are they all Americans? I bring alot to the table dog! Dont look lame and pick on one! Superman should stay white! I like him the way he is, it's just what I read with the world changing doesn't reflect what I read in the comics!

The world's changing dude! Wise up, and go figure! Whose the secretary of state for the USA? Dude, dwell on that! It's a black woman! Not even a white one! and I dont like her anyway! Course she's black dont make her right! I'm a great fan of Spiderman and he's white! I love Peter and that'll never change! I dont want him black either!

Of course, I'd still like to see a Chinese Secretary of state and so and so! I'm for all people! Heroes have to move with the times. There was an issue on this in Avengers recently last year and the heroes noticed it and said they were'nt racist. Ofcourse they're not.

Listen go to another thread and smoke a joint and chill out!

crazyspinz
i think its racist, there should be more purple people, all the purple people in the world can only like gladiator and thanos and that inst enough

I DEMAND MORE PURPLE SUPERHEROES on behalf of all of the purple people in the world What the f**k? What the f**k? What the f**k?

pr1983
i understood perfectly...

simple fact, most comics are made in america, by largely american people, therefore the characters will most likely be american...

don't even dare to call me a dumbass, you don't even know me...

and don't talk to me like a child... i know full well there are more asians than causcasianss in the world... i didn't quote any statistics, so YOU should get your facts straight...

the reason they don't as much about other countries is that if they did without actually knowing about those countries they could mess up alot...

watch your mouth... don't you even dare talk to me that way, you don't know shit about me, so stop trying to insult me... just because you have a chip on your shoulder its not my problem, you want to go around name calling thats your fault, not mine...

don't patronise me... anybody can tell the world is changing, i live in ireland, one of the most diverse countries in europe, the woman i'm with and will probably end up marrying is asian... don't even insinuate i don't know what i'm talking about...

everybody knows how diverse america is, including comic book creators... hell there was a black captain america... seriously, get that chip off your shoulder...

comic books try to find a balance between the world changing and being escapist, you saw the 9/11 issues right?

you need to seriously think before you post...

and yes, we need more purple heroes big grin

Max Spidey 24
Let the writers do what they want because if people complain then they would make characters bad on purpose to piss you off.

I dont realy like the black characters like blade(i like him only in the movies not the comics) spawn or the ones that dont seem like a superhero but just killing demons devils and crap.

I thought static was ok but then 50000 said he sucks and how hes the worst superhero ever, so i cant discuss it to any one like i would say superman in comic 47738 was aswome when he fought this. I go static was kool when he fought and people say static sucks bad and they only seen 1 episode.

I dont realy like cybork since hes hadicaped and screams booyah all the time with half a brain(in the cartoon he good but no one else thinks it , they say he got the worse eps and crap)

I started off hating alll green lanternss because of super friends and how they cheese and cant use yellow but starting from kyle it got better and john i didnt like for a while then his story got better so hes like the only one i acualy like.

For asains i like batgirl. Didnt like her at first because she replaced the other one but grew to like her

dami wilson
IT'S ALRIGHT MR 1983, I dont mean anything personal. It's all business not personal. I know it's all published in the USA by Usains but I wish they could be more inventive now as they sell in Ireland and the UK and Europe and Asia and Africa and South America. If they talk about the UN and all, they can have more diverse heros. That;s why I siad Chinesse and they dont have to live in China! I'd love to see a Super Lee comic book about Bruce Lee's grand nephew who becomes blessed with super natural powers and speed to help his kunfu skills and is being hunted by his great grandad's killers from China. He might have adamantum skelenton and loads of weapons and work for the FBI.

Maybe an Irish Punisher like dude from the former IRA who wants to spread peace by taking out hoodlums like DareDevil. So many new ideas that can make it more global! I did an MBA and was just wondering about globalization!

It's not about race! If Superman's people (maybe 4 or 6) survived somehow and were on a space journey when their planet exploded, then we could have more supermen! Come off it, if they were so advanced than us, couldn't they have had space voyages before the planet exploded?

Realistically, if we on Earth knew our planet was gonna blow up, wouldn't we be trying to get people to the moon or Mars?

DarkCrawler
There is also Purple Man, Daredevil villain.

But we seriously need more orange superheroes.

DarkCrawler
The problem is that they didn't know their planet was going to explode. They didn't believe Jor-El.

dami wilson
oh! That sucks! Anyway, we can change the story! Hey, they're doing so with spiderman and the avengers and all kinda heroes! That's why Superman 2 was really the best movie out there till spiderman came along though the ending sucked like a water melon when he revealed himself to every Tom, Dick and Harry!

Supes had competition and needed cunning! They should have a nemesis like that for superman who's a bit dumber!

dami wilson
OTHER SUPERMAN WHO COULD CREATE HAVOC ! That'd give supes more hard choices to make and we could see super battles! That's why they killed him off! No competition!
He needs somebody just as strong as him or maybe two or three. That increases the intrigue to make the story more challenging! See what I mean? Like Neo in Matrix when he was outnumbered! oR THE WARRIORS with the guy with the ring in Lord of the rings! When it seemed they'd won the battle, another more challenging obstacle came up (the huge elephants with warriors on them with arrows!) that made the viewer wonder how the heck are the warriors going to win!

But with supes, it's like 'oh we know he's going to win cus it's Supes! It takes the suspense away! Dig?

rougeredmage
hey on that big list seemed only to be made up of black super heros forgive me if i am wrong but you seem to have forgotern sunfire, and the silver samurai, and i pretty sure i didnt see the Indian sage on that list so perhaps its not all that complete>? just comfused ramblings

pr1983
speaking as an irishman who believes in a republic, the last thing we need is an IRA based hero or villain... stick out tongue

but darkcrawler is right, nobody believed jor-el until it was too late...

but to be honest i'd rather have them make new characters interesting and deep, be they white, black, asian, whatever...

and imo the one thing superman needs is new writers, there's a ton of potential but all the writers do is play it safe...

goku-vs-superma
they couldn't space travel was ILLEGAL!!!!!!!

goku-vs-superma
u really need to read your comics before u talk

dami wilson
I stopped reading DC a long long timer ago so sorry for my ignorance! That's why I joined this chat line to learn from learned friends like yourself! Aint nothing wrong with learning! I'm all hears!

So what else is there to know?

pr1983
about who? pick a character...

Mainstream
I'm a huge marvel man myself..but I still read at least 5 to 10 DC comics a week

SpyCspider
no offense dami, but reading ur posts SERIOUSLY hurts my head.....some of the jargon and lingo i simply can't get...

IMO, the characters that were created should stay the way they are. C'mon...American writers created their American icons so why are you so surprised they look the way they do? If for instance, they remade Journey of the West with the Monkey King being a white dude, how would you feel about that?
And before judging DC's iconic characters, shouldn't you brush up your knowledge of them first? Find out who Steel is before suggesting "Superman be black or asian or purple or....etc"--you get my point.

eleveninches
Superman IS from an ethnic minority

dami wilson

nah, CUS I'M BIASED LIKE MANY OF THE FOLKS THAT VISIT THIS SITE! I AM MARVEL AND MARVEL only!. Superman had no equal and nobody could beat him! Just because he was the first superhero to be commercially successful! Big deal, if they hadn't created him in the early 20th century, others would have come along! Whatever race or color or country!

Hence that stuff of him being indestructable! Anyway, how many American films are sold worldwide? Music and all? iF THEY CAN SELL STUFF WORLDWIDE and now have a President that's willing to risk American lives for the sake of DEMOCRACY, then what the heck are you saying bub? I dont have to read this new stuff cos the idealogy is still the same! You dont like my tread? Dont read it! I'm not dissing anybody just asking why! You dont learn if you dont ask!

The world's changing and so should old ancient ideas! America is full of all races and colors as seen in the US Army dude! Go check it out! I still haven't seen a WHITE FEMALE AMERICAN President yet other countries have had them in the pursuit of DEMOCRACY! Even Britain and that Islamic country PAKISTAN! Yet they talk of democracy? Till they have a White female American President (Black or White or Whatever after that) talkless of having a Chinesse or Hispanic or Black or American Indian President, there's something missing in that Democractic image! Get my drift? If you dont like my thread go put yours up and see how it's recieved to.
This is a chat line BUB! Deal with it or go somewhere private and smoke a joint to chill you down! Nothing personal! Get a life!

ragesRemorse
Comic books are one of the last safe havens for imagination and creativity that are not dominated by political correctness. Please dont take that away.

dami wilson
yeah I get you! Wish I could start my own comic book! Rebels reborn it would be called! God bless the world and not only America!

The world's a beautiful place and all races should unite cus there are aliens out there and one day, they shall invade, and then, there might not be so much fuss about race cos the ruling power wont be human!

pr1983
dude... having a woman president for the sake of pc'ness is wrong...

if they're the best for the job then fine...

being black or asian or latino does not give you a divine right to have a presidency...

and just so you know...

ireland has had two consecutive female presidents...

read x-men, mutants are the minority in that comic, and they're the heroes...

DarkCrawler
You seem to be the only angry person here...

Hence the capitals and the exclamation marks. wacko

Mainstream
never heard of Steel Wilson...consider yourself lucky.

SpyCspider
lol..couldn't have put it better myself.

And Dami, you never commented on my suggestion to revamp Journey to the West and make the characters a different ethnicity. What about Robin Hood? Or any other iconic characters? We're simply talking comics here--I believe they should stay the way they were created, or if they are going to make them different, they should give them a new name. But apparently, you wanna go debate about politics in this world of comics. Wrong forum to do that.....bub. cool

whobdamandog
The fact that people can't see the contradictions behind their own arguments bothers me in this thread......

What's wrong with having a character such as Superman being black/asian/latino/etc? I have yet to read any reason as to why it would be done for the wrong reasons..other than the "political correctness" argument.. which is a close minded assumption unto itself...

What would happen if we were introduced to a Kryptonian..who was not of the Caucasian/Eastern Euro physical standard? Why would one immediately assume that it would be done for the sake of political correctness...and why would it matter? The automatic assumption of "political correctness" is just as silly as saying that one has to have a "non-white" Superman..

whobdamandog
Another thing that bothers me is the fact that many of the people who post in this thread fail to see that many of the non-white characters they mentioned...are almost always represented by some sort of racial/ethnic stereotype..

In a world where we have women and minorities as doctor's, lawyers, world leaders, etc..the best we can do to represent them is by creating characters like Cage...(a former criminal)..Silver Samaria(the name says it all..)....Thunderbird(An American Indian who wheres a headress).......etc..etc...I mean come on..non-whites/women usually have some sort of stereotypical origin in their stories..and the fact that no one on this thread has even picked up on this is really disturbing...

speiderman
I always thought it would be cool to have maybe a hispanic Superman. Maybe make Wonderwoman Afro-American.

speiderman
The political correctness argument holds no water.

whobdamandog
Dude your absolutely correct...some of the stuff that people spew out..for cripes sake..they don't even realize how foolish they come across..but I guess what the wise man once said rings true.......ignorance is bliss...

Gregory
Because black people are black to protect them from the sun in Africa, and Superman absorbs sunlight, and thus would never develop protective pigmentation. I know that answer's over-specific, but it was the first thing that sprung to mind when I read the first post.

I don't agree with you that we could use more minority characers. But something you might not have considered is that a great many of the major white characters are also represented by various stereotypes; we have a millionaire play-boy, a small-town farm-boy, and a warrior princess as DC's big three. Then we had the heroic pilot, a group of heroic explorers, an ace police detective ... do any of these things sound particularly revolutionary or unique to you? Of course they're not--they're completely stereotypical roles.

whobdamandog
The saddest thing about your response is the fact that you automatically assumed that I was referring to having a "black" person represent a Kryptonian...when I clearly mentioned in the previous post that any ethnicity/racial group(other than white) could be used...I'd be interested to see your response as to why the ethnic/cultural/geographic features of Asians, Indians, or Latinos, could not be represented as Kryptonian..care to enlighten me?

.....Anyway...from a scientific standpoint..your argument of "Superman/Kryptonians should be white because he needs to absorb sunlight" makes absolutely no "scientific" sense...

The fact that Kryptonians utilize more UV rays than humans would actually support one's argument as to why they should be people of color....seeing as how people of darker complexions(and more pigmentation) are able to "absorb" more UV rays than those of a lighter complexions..

That's okay..I don't agree with you either...and once again your making broad assumptions that have no basis to them.

Never have I stated that comics need more minority characters my friend..Quite the contrary, I specifically stated that comics need more "diversity" amongst minority/female characters..."diversity" that doesn't represent society's "stereotypical" views of them...

Case in point the examples that you gave...help to further illustrate my position..

Why is it that caucasians..can be used to represent a multitude of different people from different walks of life. While non-whites are generally represented as characters that are deemed to fit their "racial" profiles...

It's possible for Asians, Indians, Africans, and Latinos to all fill these various positions in society is it not? Than how come we don't see them in these positions often within the comics?

To simply put it..

Not all Asians should come across as Karate/Martial Arts based characters..
Not all Native Americans should be Mystic Shamans or Chieftans...
Not all blacks should be former criminals or from African Tribes...

As you had previously asked me..let me now ask you...

dami wilson
whodamandog, are you a lecturer or a Lawrence Fishburne character? Man, you sound very deep! Wanna forma comic book? I write and draw and generally want to start a small international comic book that speaks for all people and is very deep. I'm hoping to make a film this year or next so feel free to cantact me! Word up!

The world is changing and I wanna change with it! Love and nothing but love!

Gregory
Yeh, I "automatically assumed" it. That's why I carefully took your mention of the other ethnicities out of your post so that I'd only be responding to the one where my answer applied. In response to your question, it's stupid enough that an alien from a distant galaxy looks exactly like a Caucasion male; having other aliens from the same planet who happened to look exactly like humans from other cultures would just take an already stupid situation and make it worse, in that the ludacrous nature of the situation would immediately go from hard to impossible to ignore.

I meant to say that I don't dis agree with you that we could use more minority characters. Freududian slip? You make the call, but you don't need to tell me what you decide. And since that evidently wasn't what you were saying, it probably doesn't make much difference. I don't disagree with the idea that we could use more diversity in the minority characters, either.

whobdamandog
That's a pretty bad assumption on your part...particularly since you just admitted to omitting out the "other ethnicities" in the post...

Let me get this straight..basically what I think your trying to say is since the "ethnic" standard of Krypton has been established..we shouldn't change it......

This is a common argument that I hear from most arguing your positions...the problem with this logic is that many believe that caucasian physical attributes are the norm in everything that makes up intelligent life....even when facts/logic directly show this assumption as not being valid...

By using your rationale..I could just as easily justify that whites shouldn't be shown as rappers, martial arts experts, or basketball players....based on the "ludacrous nature of the situation"

However we all know that caucasians have been represented using these personas. With the proceeding statement being accurate..please tell me why then it is "ludacrous" to use non-whites to represent characters in a similar fashion?

Case in point...it wouldn't be any more silly to believe a "black/asian/indian" Kryptonian..seeing as how a white has already been used to represent one..and remember...these are comic books after all....and the concept of "suspension of disbelief" still applies...

Well it's good to see we agree upon something...cool

radioboy121
Even though the Kryptonians were all basically pale in skin and essentially classified as a "caucasian" in our eyes doesn't necessarily mean they were mixed in their own regard. It will be much like the elves in the Lord of the Rings who are pale in skin and predominantly have blonde hair, but they were not all the same.

Mainstream
you saying it could have been some...how can I put this...nergo kryptonians?

whobdamandog
If your going to try to be funny and witty..at least spell the word right...
it's N-E-G-R-O...

Anyway..it's obvious that most in this thread have a "groupthink" mentality..seeing as how the only arguments I've heard against "non-white" Kryptonians have been..

a. It would be done for the sake of "political correctness"
b. Caucasian is the basic physical human standard..and it should stay that way..

Does that pretty much sum everyone's points up?

Anyway..you all do have the right to believe what you wish..but you might want to re-evaluate the logic behind your positions..seeing as how the later of the two arguments was used to justify segregation/slavery/and many other racist beliefs/idealogies...

radioboy121
The purpose of not totally agreeing to a change based on physical appearance for a race such as Kryptonians is the strong familiarity brought to this civilization who has been long deceased. Saying that a different group existed would require detail, such as a group living in a different region that Superman's people did not associate with, inherit environmental differences on Krypton, or divisions that were evolved much like the scenario brought on inhumans.

Writers have compensated for additions in the past by using alternate realities (i.e. Heather Hudson in Exiles), or possibly create another society altogether that made contact.

The society on Earth in slightly more recent times added the group Neo, which basically came out of nowhere to add to the existing list of homo-sapiens, homo-superiors, Externals, Eternals, Inhumans, etc. As it's in current time, it's easier to expand on a reason.

If the Kryptonians are to be more diversified, I can see something revolve around on the basis as what the Ultimates series did for Marvel, but normal continuity is another matter.

pr1983
what the f*ck?

how big is the chip on your shoulder?

nobody believes caucasians are naturally better, this aint the 50s, so watch your mouth... its insulting to think you'd sit on your high horse and generalise about us without actually reading our posts... i find it deeply offensive that you would even suggest that i would think that way...

as for political correctness... yes there is a massive element of it in todays society, i personally don't want to see comics submit to the same bullshit...

i have no problem with different ethnicities being represented in comics, in fact i encourage it, but it should be done properly.

if i'm a writer with marvel and i create a character who i see as caucasian, blonde and with blue eyes shouldn't i keep him the way i prefer?

stereotyping is wrong, i agree 100%, but you have to remember most of the characters were created in an age long gone.

If you want to go create a strong character who happens to be asian, black or white, then great, but the character must come first, skin colour shouldn't matter in their development...

Khellendros
Are you even reading your own thread? People have put up huge lists of characters from Marvel AND DC who are of other ethnicities. African Americans, Asians, Indians (both Native Americans and characters from India) and MANY eauropean ethnicities are represented in Marvel alone.

Also, there will never be an indian or latino or asian Kryptonian. Wanna know why? BECAUSE THAT IS ALL EARTH TERMINOLOGY. There is no India or Asia on Krypton, it was a whole other planet! You want a black skinned Superman? Fine, but don't expect him to go around reminiscin' 'bout growin' up in da Kryptonian ghettos, yo. And don't expect a lightly tan colored Superman with almond shaped eyes to have trouble pronouncing his R's and eat a lot of rice.

With the exception of Sentry and Apollo, almost all superman types came from OTHER PLANETS, so the best you can hope for is different skin colors. You are never going to have Kryptonian or guardian of the Shiar Empire who represents EARTH BASED CULTURES, not matter their skin pigmentation.

whobdamandog
I've always noticed that when people have nothing valid left to state..and when they've been proven wrong...they always end up throwing insults. I have nothing else to write..because you all have essentially validated all my arguments with your senseless/illogical/contradictory/racist rantings....its quite sad...but hey you do have the right to believe what you want..this is a free world that we live in (at least most of it is)...

Cheers...

pr1983
thats a major cop out, i made a valid argument and you didn't even bother to answer...

you suggested we were racist, i responded...

who was flinging insults first?

Khellendros
Actually my points, while put into somewhat harsh language, are very valid. Why don't you stop playing the victim and respond to them? My point is that people are complaining about his skin color. If Superman acts white, it's because he was raised by white people. If his skin had been pitch black or slightly reddish or mildly tanned, so long as he was raised out on the Kent farm by Ma and Pa Kent, he would act white.

You aren't going to have a Kryptonian who represents one earth culture or another because of the color of his skin, because he isn't even human. If Clark had landed in Japan, he would speak Japanese. If he'd landed in Cuba, he'd speak spanish and be a communist.

Are you so racist that the sight of caucasian skin revolts you to the point of demanding irrational things like Supermen of different ethnicities?

dami wilson
WHY SHOULD i DO THAT? i HAVE RISKED MY LIFE DEFENDING WHITE BOYS ( twice actually) from being beaten up and their head being kicked like a football! I support all races. Last month in a bus stop, I stepped in to stop a black (mixed race girl) and her black friends (15 to 17 years old) from beating up an old white homeless lady. I and another mixed race gal stood by to protect her from futher abuse when she shouted for help. I was so angry I was willing to hit a woman with maximum force if need be to protect this old homeless lady. Icalled the security there and demanded they call the police which they couldn't as the old lady refused to press charges! I am not racist! I have kids born by a white lady but I believe in society changing!

It's true that everybody tkae to the caucasian race as being superior that you get other races striving to imitate them and marry them and diss themselves. Comics played a large part in my childhood!

SOCIETY FRAMES CHILDREN'S MINDS AND WHEN they read stories like this even though the world is changing, writers have to enlighten! I dont read all these other characters you've pointed out cus they're not that popular! Even when they made Iron man black, it looked fake! Cus we all knew the original! I dodnt want anybody to be politically correct, just to wise up that society is changing even from the 50's and 60's!

These world is fu..ked up anyway and that's why we have global wraaming and chaos having left and center! Tsunami, Tornadoes and whatever! And this is just the begining, I dont want to go religious here but this world is doomed anyway! So I aint bothering about the race issue! Look at the war going on!

I AM JUST SAYING..................AS TIME IS Changing, are writers of these medium changing too? I agree with some of what wahtdamandog says because even the white dudes are all american yet it's one world!
The internet has brought us all closer together! PLanes and other forms of transport and yet even sucha small thing as a comic can't reflect this?

No wonder they killed supermna huh? Compare the numbers sold now to then. Why do Spiderman and The Xmen are popular now? They're underdogs!

dami wilson
Thank you to all those who have participated in this thread. I appreciate a good discussion. God bless you all and the world too. May those who take time out to inspire us in the world be blessed so their writing and creativity might be a value to us! Amen, this thread wasn't formed for racism or anything else of the sort! Thank you.

ragesRemorse
Has anyone read the spiderman comic where he is changed for the indian people. His name and all other character names have been changed. He looks bad ass, but i cant believe there giving our heros to the rugheads.

DarkCrawler
Indian Spidey was stupid. They should make Finnish Spider-Man.

His name would be Petteri Parkkonen.

Bardock42
No, there are only the superpeople that are there yes
