Hey everyone!

I am writing a research paper on how the media (mainly print and broadcast advertisement) affects the self esteem and self image of children and teenagers

I was hoping that I could get some first-hand input on the topic. If anyone would like to share their stuggles with self-image, eating disorders caused by it, self esteem, and just opinions in general about how the media affects us please email me at webmaster@distortedsound.com, or leave a post!
Everything is all anonymous, and everything is all in the name of educating others!!!

I myself have struggled with some of the things I have mentioned, but it is not an opinion paper so I need input from others!

PASS THE WORD ALONG! EVERYONE'S OPINION COUNTS!!!

thank you very much!

Don't watch the media anymore. I've know a lot of people that have given up TV and just rent videos so they know what their getting.

We're not supposed to look like the plastic people we see in the media.
We are better than that. Are we all to look like Barbie and Kens to feel good. I say revolt!!!

Look even kids want to get their stomachs chopped in half. Just to be thin Now Media is sick sick sick to kids.

This doesn't belong here. You've posted this in the GDF and the OTF already.

I know that little girls get self esteem issues by comparing themselves to super hot women they see in the media........but the media is not to blame. It's nothing new. Long before the television or printing press was invented girls had self esteem issues. They would see another girl in school, whatever, who was skinnier....had bigger breasts...etc......and wish they too looked like that.

It's not a problem with society.....it's simply nature. Men are attracted to the better looking women. It's the same now as it has been for thousands upon thousands of years. Nobody is to blame. It's just the way the world works.

a bizzare topic to say the least...everyone thinks that people bow to the media and its portrayal of the "ideal" persona in the physical sense

yet at the same time we are constantly being told that the western media influenced world is getting fatter and fatter on a daily basis

they cant both be right

Evil Dead
the arguement is actually the exact opposite.

People claim the media is responsible for forcing upon society the image of what a good woman should look like.

They must forget it's society who pays for the media. By us purchasing the magazines we are dictating to the media what society thinks a good woman should look like. They just put on the cover what we tell them to.

Ethics still will be able to change one's view of the world, won't it?

Evil Dead
where does ethics come into play in this discussion? we are talking about what society deems as physical beauty.

Hiya! I'm writing an article for my uni newspaper on a similar theme - do you want to share research/websites/ideas? I have written to Dove as they are doing a Campaign for Real Beauty in the UK, which I think is brilliant. I'm researching how negative body images portrayed by the media contribute towards the rise in Eating Disorders

It is up to you to decide whether or not the media overpowers who you are and how you think.
