Aku
I hate it when people say stuff like good charlotte and simple plan are punk when they are so not. Its pop music. Can't people enjoy real punk music?

-Brand new
-Funeral For A Friend
-Straylight Run
-Zebrahead

Instead of this crap they call music. Only fake rockers who dont know anyother rock bands listen to that bullcrap.

Deathblow
Ummm...none of those bands are real punk, in fact they're not even close to punk. Brand New and FFAF are basically emo, Zebrahead and Straylight are just terrible, terrible bands. Honestly they're all just as un-punk rock as Simple Plan and GC.

Real punk is Stiff Little Fingers, Misfits, Ramones, The Clash, Social Distortion, Black Flag, The Stranglers, Dead Kennedys, Flogging Molly, Rancid, Propagandhi, The Buzzcocks, NOFX, Circle Jerks, Operation Ivy and Minor Threat to name but a few.

Norma Jean
MXPX and Flogging Molly are my favorites.

Korri
Now thats more like it snake

rockchickgem
i thought funeral for a friend were emo?

rockchickgem
oh its already been said lol

StinkFist462
yea they are

Afro Cheese
What is it with punk fans and "real" punk. Just because a band sucks doesn't mean you can say they aren't real punk. If they fit the genre, they are punk whether they suck or not. Sucking would just make them shitty punk, not "fake." You don't see me calling rappers I don't like fake hip hop, it's shitty hip hop.

WhoKnows?
does green day count?

mr.smiley
misfits are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i would consider green day one of the newer "punk bands"
even though i would never say a punk band could win a grammy.
lol

SlipknoT
I love Misfits and like Flogging Molly, but thats about it for punk.

StinkFist462
Transplants , Decendants , Dillinger 4 , NOFX , Flogging Molly , Ramones , Sex Pistols , Clash , and Randid .. are my fav punk bands

el_barto
Ramones, The Clash, Jawbreaker, And Greenday have to be my favorite

Aku, if you'r gonna start a thread about Real Punk then at least get your facts strait.
I don't think Green Day can be concidered real punk, they're more like real punkrock. I don't like punk so to call Green Day punk, is an insult as far as I'm concerned.
Oh and you guys forgot Toy Dolls, MXPX, Feanix TX, Midtown, Useless ID and a few other but the hour is getting late and I can't think of any more so that's it for now.

Konjammenson
I despise Good Charlotte with a passion. A freind of mine had the cd and I looked at it. There is some stupid story in the booklet that the singer wrote about how he always gets in fights with people who say hes not punk. Yea, its really gay. He also thanks all the fans who helped him make it because if it werent for them he would still be working a dead end job at Target. What? This coming from the same person whos big single was saying not to conform and get educated! What a hypocrite piece of junk and a worthless human being.

AcrypT
I'm not sure if Toy dolls - Nelly The Eliphant can be concidered punk (I'm pretty sure it's punk) but that's just about the punkiest song I like...Actually I love that song!

Hydrokronic
Yeah you tell em, but those bands you named arent punk dude I never even heard of them, my dad hasnt either and he was a traditional punk back in 79-83.

Punk bands I like

Dead Kennedys
The Ramones
The Germs
The Exploited (Sex & Violence!)
Sex Pistols
The Addicts

Corp punk bands I like

Green Day *only song i dont like from them is american idiot*
Rancid

Wannabe punk bands I hate:
Simple plan <-- just wtf dude wtf!
sum41 <-- just plain retarded
Good Charolette <-- posers

Dude look at the difference between the punk bands I like and the ones I hate, the ones I like all have cool authentic punk names, what kind of name is simple plan, sum41 and good charolette those are all pussy names

moonwalker741

****ing great band......r.i.p Johnny Ramone sad

moonwalker741
Listen to Dookie, or they're first two independent albums, it was really the punk revivial....but those albums were really good, you would enjoy those more than american idiot

rockchickgem

khalla
Sorry...?

Silver Stardust
All excellent groups big grin

Sex_kitten
Has anyone mention The new york Dolls? Those are one of the bands that Inspired Punk.

Johnny Thunders all the way, babe!

IMETSIMPLEPLAN
not true:

just a point, sp and greenday are not punk or heavy metal or rock or whatever you say their not, but they are definately not POP!!! mad
sad
Id say they pretty much form a category of their own
maybe sum one cud make up a name 4 this category to prevent arguements.
like 'fit' music or summit. lol. Happy Dance

Alpha Centauri
Simple Plan are purely Pop. There is nothing remotely Rock about them.

Green Day have Pop sensibilities but are mainly a Punk sound.

Fit music?

When will you and your fangirl groups understand that it's not about image. Can you hear how good they look on the CD? No.

If I had a gun....

-AC

IMETSIMPLEPLAN
just beacuse they are not rock doesnt make them pop!
there are many variations of music that arent rock
including drum n bass
urban
classic
etc. (not that i like any of these)

i agreed that even simple plan cliam that they are not rock
are you not happy?

IMETSIMPLEPLAN
im sorray for affending you
im not a little pop girl

i liked simple plan and greendays music well before i saw their faces or to that point their bodies. Infact, i didnt fancy them till i saw them in concert. Everyone has different tastes in music, which i can accept
but it really p****s me off when ppl call these bands pop.

Read the new issue of karrang out today. Would sp and greenday b in karrang if they werent good/ if they were pop?! smile

Alpha Centauri
"Read the new issue of karrang out today. Would sp and greenday b in karrang if they werent good/ if they were pop?!"

Yes.

I never said Green Day were Pop. I said they have Pop sensibilities. Simple Plan ARE Pop. The only reason they are in Kerrang is because they carry instruments. Fightstar were in Kerrang also, so were Good Charlotte. There's nothing remotely Rock about any of those bands.

You didn't offend me but I don't care if it pisses you off or not. Simple Plan are Pop.

-AC

IMETSIMPLEPLAN
didnt g/d win an award for best rock album?

Alpha Centauri
Does the word 'simple' just apply to the band you like? Or you too?

I'm not explaining it again but give me your address and I'll draw you a nice diagram with pretty pictures.

-AC

Korri
Simple Plan are far from Rock anyway.

khalla
The point is Simple Plan are pop. Try to actually listen to their music not just look at their faces and drift away from the actual music thinking how you would go out if you met david!

Damn Teenies whistle roll eyes (sarcastic)

amity75
Tut tut, the amount of times "Punk" gets mentioned on these forums without the very name of "The Exploited" getting mentioned.

MaggotCorps
these are my fave punk bands:

Bad Relegion
Misfits
Rancid
Dead Kenneys

barbarossa
Special Plan (because only Special people listen to it), Good Charolette, Green day- They are ALL pop pansys. I Respect and like the old GD stuff but they sold out so badly it makes me want to puke. Real punk is not dead but to the majority of people it is. Their concept of punk is what is stuffed down their throats by popular media- Bratz dolls plastered with british flags or the "bratz PuNk!" series as its known, Avril with her ****ing shitty ass piece of shit pop jizm thats supposed to be music, simple plan and good charolette. All MTV baby shit that mean NOTHING to real Punk!

You guys forgot Anti-Flag! euro

Reckoning
I loved the part where the author of this thread asks for 'real' punk and the bands he listed were an absolute disgrace.

Haywee
Why is everyone so hung up on what genre to put different bands in?does it matter that much reallyhuh everyone has a different take on what is what and not everything fits in to a category. And why if you hate the band so much did you read the cover of good Charlotte's album?!? What you think of the people in the band shouldn't decide whether you like their music miffed

Kharhmah
You guys p*ss me off so much sometimes.

Smasandian
My fav punk bands are
Thrice, Bigwig and Thursday, Refused.

I have others but im getting really bored and the sound feels too old. NOFX were great 10 years ago, but the newer shit is still the same thing. Same with Pennywise, Dropkick and all the older punk bands from the early 90's. Punk was great, but alot of its the same now.
Emo isnt "punk", its emo. And their is some good emo bands out there but I dont call them punk.

Haha, I love the way you make some big world-weary speech like you're a real punk veteran, after stating (to my great amusement I might add) that your 4 favorite 'punk' groups are Thrice, Thursday and Refused, 3 posey totally non-punk emo/screamo bands, and one wannabe band who are more nu metal than punk.

Dropkicks are average, Pennywise suck. NOFX ten years ago? So that'll be pre-Punk In Drublic/So Long & Thanks.../War On Errorism NOFX then. Have you got ears? Then you'll know that those three, all produced within the last 7 years, are NOFX's best albums. By far. And if you do in fact have ears, maybe you should actually listen to all the new touches and instrumental additions NOFX made to their latest album, released just a mere 2 years ago, in order to (successfully) freshen up their sound. Punk isn't old, it isn't dead, and it isn't going anywhere.

Here ends the shit fit.

Red Superfly
Anyone that thinks they are punk, usually aren't.

What do people think of The Dropkick Murphys? I'd consider them to be punk. They have that Irish-folk-like attitude which seems more friendly and community based, which in many ways punk has aspired to be. Saw em live last year, their moshpit was like a tornado. So glad I was nowhere near it.

DEFCON One
SP and GC are far from punk. GC pretends to be punks, by getting tatoos and dressing as punk rockers should, but that is just a cover-up for the fact that they are definitely pop music. SP just sucks.

punk bands:
Avenged Sevenfold
Bad Religion
The Used
Rancid
Static Lullaby

Smasandian
Im not a punk veteren, I never stated that I am.
Thats my personal opinion that the punk that is popular today is shit.
And Deathblow, Punk in Drublic was released 10 years ago and is basically the same as Two Heebs but with better production values. It has some good songs and classics. So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes was released 8 years ago and had alot of ska. NOFX is great, but their sound is getting old. How many times do we have to hear about how bad the government is and/or funny lyrics.
What new bands out there are punk now?

All punk is now is some genre with sub genres like any other genre. Not like before, where punk was punk. I dont call myself a punk because I was never was. I used to love punk music but I got bored.
And you forget Bigwig, and if people dont call them punk I dont know what punk is. I always thought punk music was about attitude and not how it sounds.

Darth Jello
the adolescents, tsol, the joykiller, dead kennedys, sex pistols, DI, the clash, UK Subs, Sham 69, Minor Threat, the Cruci****s, Millions of Dead Cops, Flipper, Negative Trend, DOA, NOMEANSNO, Channel3, NotFlipper, ADZ, Flower Lepperds, Reno Divorce, LARD, Melvins, X, the Germs, Nirvana, the Meatmen, LA's Wasted Youth, Black Flag, The Circle Jerks, The Avengers, The Weirdos, cramps, Vice Squad, Butthole Surfers, Shonen Knife, Ramones, etc.

Did you not see the ''like you're some punk veteran''? Clearly not. Why do you people always misinterpret simple similes all the time?

Actually, it was released just over 7 years ago. And it's way better than Two Heebs, the songs were better, Fat Mike's voice is better, the guitar is much better (see Dig) and yes, the production values were better. So Long was released after Punk In Drublic, it's also just over 7 years old, and NOFX ska rules, so I really don't see your point there. And no their sound isn't getting old, like I said their latest album sounds totally fresh, loads of new instrumental, vocal and lyrical touches. And omfg, you just proved you know nothing about NOFX anyway, because War On Errorism (an album you clearly either don't have or have listened to like once), was their first political album. So no, you haven't heard them tell you how bad the government is over and over.

I fail to see how that's a bad thing, or even how it has anything to do with this argument. Every genre ever created has spawned sub-genres.

I didn't forget Bigwig, see:

Maybe so with the attitude thing, but if that was the case then Public Enemy, Rage Against The Machine, System of a Down, Mr. Lif and any number of metal, alt rock & hip-hop groups would be classed punk, so in other words, no, it's not just about the attitude. It would be a ridiculous genre if that was the case. And you clearly don't know what punk is, so please just go back to your weak little Thursday emo bands.

Smasandian
Actually, Punk in Drublic was released in 94. Check out thier website and Epitaph's website and you would see that it was released in 94. So Long was released after Heavy Petting Zoo/Eating Lamb in 97. That makes that 7-8 years ago.
Did I misinperet a smile? What are you talking about?
And your right. War on Errorism was the first "political" record. Im sorry.
I didnt say that have subgenre's is a bad thing, but people say some band isnt punk but scremo/emo. Wouldnt that be a subgenre in the punk genre? If it is, couldnt you say its punk?, its in the genre Alot of these subgenres have been started because of punk. Emo started because the musicians liked punk but wanted it to be emo ( i dont know exactly what emo is, nonbody has every clearly stated what emo is, the only thing ive heared its emotional music but some punk have emotional lyrics but the chord progression and timing is clearly punk).

I dont know what punk is and I dont think alot of people who listen to punk now what it is. But **** off if you think you have to know what punk is to listen to it. The bands that started the whole genre played because of attitude. They sucked a playing the instruments and had horrible music, but the attitude that they had made what punk is. Do you think the Sex Pistols went out and played to showcase thier skills and make money?

Deathblow
Ha, so it was. My mistake. That makes it about 8-1 overall.

Simile. I hope that was a joke, because if it wasn't I think you might need to go to school.

Kind of. Emo is more a subgenre of hardcore, which used to be a subgenre of punk, but it's evolved beyond punk now. Emo is basically hardcore mixed with a little bit of punk, with whiney vocals, teen angst lyrics and poppy hooks. It also relies heavily on dominant guitar chords (often). Screamo is emo but with more erratic time changes, harder guitars and more screamed/growled vocals. Musically-wise it can sometimes be close to punk, attitude/lyric/presentation-wise it's definitely not punk.

I'll thank you not to question my knowledge of punk, my father grew up in the punk explosion and knows more about it than any person I know. He worked for a punk magazine for three years, and has pretty much passed his love of it on to me. And please, early punk bands had horrible music you say? Ever heard The Ramones or The Clash or The Damned or The Stranglers etc? Amazing, energetic, raw music.

moonwalker741
Yeah REAL punk music is like The Ramones, Dead Kennedys (sp?), The Clash and Teh Sex Pistols.....

I assumed you knew something about it and Im not arguing with you to see who knows more. If you didnt know already, Im arguing because I feel the "new" punk being released now, is getting kinda of old to me. But, if they're something out there that I feel is different, send them my way.
What I meant by horrible music was that its that easy to write and play but thats not why its great. Its great because it is raw, intense and different (compared to what was out at the time).
I also know about punk, not as much as you, but I still do. What my problem is that I dont know all these subgenres now. They confuse me now because nonbody really knows what bands are in what genres. You say one thing, somebody else says another. When I say Bigwig is punk, you call them nu metal, while somebody calls them heavy metal.
I do know who the Sex Pistols, The Clash and who The Ramones are, Im not that retarded.
Just curious about why you called Bigwig wannabes? I like them because its heavy, great guitar licks, and they're live show kicks ass.

loserib
thrash metal is a sub genra of punk its like a punk heavy metal fusion my band wins over old school punk fans all the time

Darth Jello
I don't know, i get sick of people who listen to nothing but good charlotte, Yellow Card, and Spank 182 and then go to good shows and start fights. At the same time, the elitist dicks in the Crass T-shirts who will kick your ass if you don't listen to what they consider to be punk (usually any band that sounds exactly like agnostic front) piss me off too. the bottom line is, don't be a retard.
If a band flaunts the punk thing or is advertised as such, they're probably douches. At the same time, just because a band is on a major lable or on mtv, doesn't mean they're sellouts.
The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, and X were all on major lables.
The Ramones and TSOL had videos on MTV.

Smasandian
What I hate is the crazy loon's who try to actually kill people in the pit. Im talking punching and kicking the crap out of people. Thats not cool.

DEFCON One
everyone says that "real punk" is all the hardcore heavy stuff. But the real punk rock is bands like the Ramones and the Clash, and I wouldnt call them hardcore.

Darth Jello
do you mean the guys with swastikas Smas?

Smasandian
Well whatever they wear but usually yes.
Whenever somebody fell, I would always make the effort to stop them from getting trampled. Its common courtesy. These guys/girls could care less. I also hate crowd surfers, argh!

Darth Jello
i hate driving the lead singer of your fave band to a meeting and finding out he's a dick.

Beckspistol
my fav. are
casualties
sex pistols
slf
exploited
the damned

did anybody know crass?
