In the show Smallville, Clark Kent was Lex Luthor's friend. How was that possible when Lex was uppose to be Superman's enemy?

dude do you read comics? clark and lex did originally start as best friends but lexs hunger for the power he lacked that supes has drove him to hate clark and supes.
