So people what do you think affects us more nurture or nature. Would you be the same if you were born of your parents but brought up by others. We all have the chracteristics and the tendency to act like our parents but are these genetic or because they brought us up?
debbiejo
Nurture.
peterKSL
Nurture is nature..
debbiejo
^ Is that like a tree hugging you??
dave123
Both to an unknown extent
peterKSL
You don't include human beings as nature?
Everything in this world act according to nature... there is no such thing that doesn't act/happen according to nature, because that is just not possible... Even artificial is part of nature('s plan)...
peterKSL
If Lydia were to meant something else, then I suggest that she use another word other than nature...
debbiejo
^ I was teasin with ya
But...what do you mean about the artificial??
Darth Revan
Both... In this genetics textbook somebody gave me for some reason, it shows a pair of identical twins raised apart from the time they were born, and they look amazingly different.
peterKSL
Sorry didn't get the joke..
I mean artificial as man-made things, which some people exclude it from nature...
Reborn Again
This question is redundant is many ways, because despite we are born to our parents, others actually raise us. We are taught by our peers, friends, environment, TV, and outside forces. Our parents are merely a go-between, a stablizer for us to take our first steps out into the world. Also, we may have our parents genetic make-up, but not all the genes are turned on, thus we are all different.

Nurture affects you first... then nature takes over
FeceMan
Both to a great extent.

If all our traits are determined by our genes, by our environment, by chance, or by some combination of these acting together, then there seems to be little room for free will.

That's a good point...
Leaves little room for it....So, I believe you can overcome nature and nurture...It just has an influence.

In simplistic genetics terms...
Genetic potential = Genotype
Genes + Total environment (i.e. nutrition, experiences, decisions, chance occurrences... basically all external factors be they physiological, psychological whatever) = Phenotype
Failure to reach genetic potential = incomplete penetrance.

Nurture is by far the most important thing. I know a guy thats adopted. You can clearly see that he acts like his parents with a lot of things.
Atlantis001
Nurture is important, but depending but nature is very important too... there are things that never change, and if that person has a strong will, or personality she will remain much the same.

What is Nurture?
Atlantis001
Its the education received in home.

Who you are will come through no matter how you were raised. But it is undeniable that how you are raised has significant impact on how you behave.

Nurture may have historically referred mainly to the care given to children by their parents, any environmental (not genetic) factor also would count as nurture in a contemporary nature versus nurture debate, including one' s childhood friends, one' s early experiences with television, and one' s experience in the womb.
A liberal interpretation of nurture might count all life experience as nurture.
DanieLs_4_Ever
That's a tough question.
Nurturing is care you get from your family, to help you grow, and to learn.
Nature is everything AROUND you, it, too, has many things to help you out.
EsteemedLeader
well, neither. if either was changed, the results would be dramatic. they both affect each other. so if you change the nature, the nurturing will also have to change to the same extent. the same is true of vice-versa
