Prove the contrary.

Can't actually be proven scientifically, which is a shit really.

Just left up to those who know real art to decide which is better and in that case, Tool are obviously the chosen.

I think it might be vaguely provable if you look at the purpose of music. Reflection of self, emotional outlet, truth and honesty. Britney's music has none of that and is designed to spin money, Tool's music is anything but that. Is art in it's purest form, is a reward for interacting with the music.

Also the manner in which both are created. Britney sings into a mic then uses a computer to make her sound so much better, all the music created via computer or with extremely low quality musicians, has songs written for her.

Tool, besides the VERY bog standard fact that they play instruments, can claim easily to be the best at doing so as a unit.

Tool as a band are more involved in the full production of their music, every aspect of their songs are created solely by the band, whereas Britney has a less involved input into it... the outcome is a matter of opinion, but the process and involvement can quite clearly be judged and rated.

and Tool are undoubtedly superior in that aspect, and as a result -irrespective of opinion- they can be classed as the superior musical entity surely?

You can't prove any music is better than any other music obviously, because what's considered good music is subjective to opinion. Even if you were to prove Tool are more involved in the production of their music, that doesn't prove it's better. You could prove it's more complex, you could prove Britney's music is molded by record labels for her fans, but none of that proves a thing when it comes to who's music is actually better. I'm not sure if you could prove who's music takes more talent because talent isn't something that can be universally measured, but even if you could, that still wouldn't make it better music. Music isn't only about who has more talent, it's supposed to be about what sounds better, and of course there is no way to prove one type of music sounds better than another.
