Supes is the best charachter ever.

superman is cool on smallville but he stinks everywhere else he needs to get a new suit and stop being such a do gooder. he should be more like batman have a meanstreak when the villain steps out of line. He is like jackie chan. You see what he can do, but you just can't take him seriously. He should be like jet li. when its time to fight, jet li brutalizes his opponents(See romeo must die or kiss of the dragon).
Supes cvould be cool,though. He isn't totally hopeless. they just need to give him a new "non sissyfied" custom and a meanstreak or a quick temper. Then he'd be cool like batman.

Sigh...uneducated, ignorant superman bashing. Superman is more than just a comic character with superpowers. He is an pop culture icon, that is more recognizble than any other I'll wager. And now to argue the specifics.

He does not have "too many powers" as I have stated before almost all other superheroes derive their power from him because he is the original comic book hero. None of the points stated in your first post are facts merely your own opinions. Now Im not saying you have to like him but if you have no respect for him you dont know anything about comic book history and are a pathetic drone mindlessly following the masses in the popular superman bashing.

Hey guys I like Superman as well as the next guy, but he does have an awful lot of powers. Super Strength, speed, can fly and survive in space and all elements. Immune to most energies, and harm, ultra hearing, X-ray vision and probably a few more that I forgot. Basically he is the oober super hero. His only weakness is a green rock. If that is not overpowered then what is? The only other superheroes i can think of that are more oowerful are Phoenix, the gods of Asgard, Silver Surfer, and Captain Marvel.

so why pick on superman? He is like that cause he was the first, heroes afterword had to have variations of the same powers if they had the same ones they would simply be copies i.e. Captain Marvel whom DC sued for some odd 12 years.

You obviously don't know cracker jacks about Superman. If you had any real knowledge about the man of steel you would know that he has NO large ego. Superman always tries to talk things over before engaging in a battle. He is diplomatic and is not a bully! He doesn't use his powers to abuse or do harm to anyone. He never asks for gratification or recognition. Superman is one of the most decent coolest Superhero EVER!

I used to dislike Superman, but now I am starting to warm to him.

His character has been re-written and now more in balance, yet he still remains powerful, that's how I like it.

Now, the only things I don't like about Superman are his "silly" superpowers. Things such as laser vision and ice breath, it's stupid.

If he had just X-Ray or Night Vision and maybe say just breath that creates a gale, then sure, but laser vision is silly on a character like Supes. X-Ray and Night Vision are Super-MAN things you would expect a Super-MAN to have so they are OK, but laser vision ain't one of em.

Supermans costume, is iconic, I don't it needs any changes at all - except maybe lose the underpants, darken the tones and get rid of the yellow.

His character, hrm yeah, comparred to Spider-Man and Batman he's pretty boring, but he's more interesting than most superheroes out there.

Superman is not the worst character ever. When you look at the culture of superheroes, a character like Superman is a necessity. We humanbeings need to feel that there is someone who will do right everytime, and has the power to accomplish it, hence Superman. I am a fan of Superheroes, no matter who or what they are. Superman's personality is the perfect foil for any and all superheroes to be compared to. He is also the perfect referance for any creator of superheroes to start from.

Superman is an Icon. He is the original archetypal Superhero - from whom all Supers have descended.

And as for him being overpowered.... have you seen how many Marvel characters there are out there who can do completely lunatic things? Galactus, Surfer, Thanos, Odin, etc etc - all of whom make Supes look like a little child. How can you say that Supes is overpowered lol?

Besides which, I actually PREFERRED the old pre-crisis Supes. The idea of Superman is that he is the living embodiment of truth justice and goodness! I love to see the bad-guys shocked and terrified by h is invulnerability and to see cosmic beings flee when he throws planets at them like baseballs. Sadly he's not like that anymore.

No that is a rather poor observation. If Superman has no flaws and no heart then how comes he still goes Clark Kent? No heart? How about the love is his life Lois Lane? The reason why Superman has been dislike is because he has been used as patriotic figure when he waves the American flag. It created animosity towards the character. What critics DIDN'T realize is that Superman maybe at times patriotic, but he doesn't let his patriotism blind his common sense and also his sense of Justice. He fights crime and injustice anywhere at anytime. He fights crime globally and doesn't care whether criminals are American or European or Asian.

I may just be stealing these lines from Kill Bill, but, I have a good reason why Superman is the most definitive, and unique superhero.

Every superhero has an alter ego. Batman is really Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is really Peter Parker. Peter Parker has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. But, here is why Superman is unique: Superman, was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he is Superman. The costume with the red 'S' is the blankets he was wrapped in when the Kents found him in the spaceship. Now, Superman's alter ego: Clark Kent; the business suit, the glasses; that is the costume. Clark Kent is Superman's way of blending in with humans. That is why I think Superman is the definition of SUPER hero. Because he IS Superman.

Hogan was a pretty crappy wrestler. The only reason he was so great was because he drew in the fans. Same with Ultimate Warrior. Machoman. Steve Austin. Etc.

Like it would have been so easy for Lex to do so. And the Superman movie has way more to live up to then the X-men series.

Superman is the most widely recognized Superhero of all time, Period. You may think his comics are bad, but don't pretend like you wouldn't want his powers if you could. Since when is having it all a bad thing?

1) Being the first character doesn't automatically make you an especially good one. Just the opposite, really, since his creators didn't have the chance to learn from other comic creator's mistakes. It does makes you one of the most important ones--but that's another issue.

2) It's just silly to say that we wouldn't have superhero comics without Superman. By the time Superman came out, their were already masked heroes (the Phantom, for example) running around; giving them superhuman powers wasn't a huge leap. Never-the-less,

3) If you don't like him, why are you posting in the Superman forum? Have you been implanted with some sort of alien mind-control device that prevents you from just not paying attention to heroes who don't interest you?

I would also like to add that we're all forgetting about the worlds very first superhero - Jesus Christ himself!

Then there's Peter Pan and Zorro.

Supes still took it all one step further though.

The character has been around for 67 years and still manages to stay on the top selling comics list. Face it, Superman has longevity. My opinion or Superman growing up was just the opposite. I thought Superman was boring as a kid but now that I can appreciate all the history the goes in to the character and I have more respect for what he represents than any other hero, even though he's not my favorite. The only hero Marvel has who comes anywhere near the historical merit of Superman is Captain America, another hero who represents much to be respected.

What would make Superman better? Berserker rages? Sideburns? A spiffy trench coat and a Cajun accent? Wolverine is my favorite Marvel character and all, but I must admit he has one of the dumbest histories of all comic characters...

A mutant born with the power to heal from just about fatal injury in the 1800s who fought in every war the United States has been involved in since the day he was born and on yeah we can't forget that he has extensive martial arts training from the Orient and then he was kidnapped by the Canadian government who was only fronting for the American government and then they made his skeleton indestructible with a very painful procedure so now he has claws that can cut through anything and he was brainwashed to be the perfect killing machine with a bunch of body hair that the chicks in the Marvel universe seem to dig because he has banged ALL of them and he's been "killed" a few times only to later be revealed that he was on another planet the whole time and it was his clone or a alien or a robot that looked like him and not him after all and his archenemy is his father/brother/former teammate but no one is quite sure what he really is because both Sabretooth's and Wolverine's memories might be implants or the real thing and his father/brother/former teammate killed his girlfriend only for her to turn out to be an arch-criminal known as Madame Hydra and then Sabretooth really does end up killing her anyway and now it turns out that "Weapon X" is not the letter but he was "Weapon Ten" all along and they are like up to number thirteen now...and it goes on and on like this.

Anybody remember the Scarlet Spider? or the time when Spidey went around masquerading as four different heroes so no one would figure out Spider-Man was masquerading as only one hero? Or when Spidey's parents returned from the dead only to not really be his parents? Even Cap was frozen in the ocean for a few decades and was thawed to go back and fight crime in a new era. And can someone please draw out the Summers family tree for me because I got lost about seven members from alternate realities ago.

See why I think the simplistic concept of Superman isn't that bad?

P.S. I wouldn't knock the glasses. It beats when Wolverine was running around thinking an eye patch would fool everybody who knew him as Logan into mistaking him for a simple bar owner. Like that hair wasn't a dead giveaway or anything. Oh yeah, that's right. It did fool everybody. Even the professional detectives Drew and McCabe's intuition couldn't penetrate that great disguise.

What you're talking about is lame storytelling for cool heroes. Supes is just a lame hero. And he's been involved in some pretty lame stories too. Wolverine doesn't do the patch thing anymore. Hell he doesn't even wear the mask all the time. I don't think he's all that worried about people knowing who he is. The Glasses thing is done everyday and everyday it's stupid. You say "simplistic". he stopped wearing the mask for totally different reasons... i.e. it represented a part of him that was no more... it was part of his character development...

unless supes pulls a daredevil and outs himself, the glasses will stay, thankfully...

He still wears the mask, just not all the time. Supes is a character I've heard creators say they'd kill off & don't wanna write for because he's too powerful. He was cool for the time he was created, but now he's a walking Superhero stereotype. Ever see that SNL episode w/the Rock in the Superman sketch?

people whine that he's too powerful... then give him enemies that match him...

he could do with some new writers, but i dont think the character himself is as bad as people claim...

I wouldn't say he's the worst character ever, but I would say that out of all the more famous characters, he's the least interesting by far.

i mean during the jim lee run it established (the writing wasnt great but it had a point) that superman is a troubled individual, who isn't sure if there's a point to him being the hero he is... and with all his abilities that he couldnt stop the dissappearence of the one person closest to him...

firstly, superman doesnt do cartwheels... why? because he's strong enough to take hits from doomsday and keep coming back... supes has to be in control at all times, one slip could kill hundreds of people...

Think harder. Supes was always the guy who only had problems when in costume. Now they're giving him grief!? Spidey's grown up, but they've never really had to change him around like that. Counting pre-crisis, how many times have they repackaged him? Dude went from jumping to flying. They had to tone him down a while back because he was just ridiculous. W/Spidey there's almost always a sense of possible danger. To challenge Supes you gotta be either a god, wizard, or have that glowing rock. That glasses thing is horrible. When Spidey came along, he changed and re-energized a genre that had started growing stale. When Smallvile is @ it's best, it's been called the Marvel version of Superman. Which Marvel hero in his youth is he most like on that show? You know the answer. We both do. To say that Superman is boring, is ignorant. First of all, in this day and age for hero to be noble and have regard for human life is rare. With all of the Wolverene's and Punishers (like them too) it is a breath of fresh air to have someone to look up to like Superman. This forum is proof that I'm right. People bash Superman and call him boring because he has morals and uses his powers to help people. This is a sad day and age.

With all of the Wolverene's and Punishers (like them too) it is a breath of fresh air to have someone to look up to like Superman. This forum is proof that I'm right. People bash Superman and call him boring because he has morals and uses his powers to help people. ??? He's lame IMO because of his number and degree of powers. The glasses thing is lame too. I can't think of too many superheroes who don't use powers to help people. Capt. America has morals like Superman's, but he's not boring.

Personally I think Silver Surfer and Thor are MUCH lamer. Ever wonder why Silver Surfer's comics last for only few months at best?

They're both more interesting. Superman came out 1st and @ a time when people would buy anything different, even if it was crap.

Well, when i was a kid i absolutely loved Superman. i mean, i worshipped the guy. Flying....who wouldn't love to fly...who hasn't had flying dreams? Superstrength....i mean...nough said As for the rest of the powers...well, it's enough to make any kid drool. Then i grew into the angsty goth/i hate life teenager that was into Batman, Spiderman, and Spawn. But i'm older, more mature now.
I don't find inner demons so interesting anymore, traumatizing experiences that enteraining, etc. etc. In an imperfect world, Spiderman is a scrawny little kid that to me looks like a 5 year old given control over nuclear missiles....so...a mistake.
Batman looks like a guy that just can't get over an early experience and that most likely is afraid of counselling because it might just cure him and then what would he do right?
Superman is up there with the best. He represents hardness. A guy that won't give up no matter what. He has ideals and principles and you;re blaming him for that. He's fighting the good fight, protecting the innocent and even those that aren't innocent. For Christ's sake, this isn't even his planet...

I never said he was the worst character ever, but he is the most boring mainstream character. I watch Smallville often and hate when I miss it. I watch all the DCU toons(but T.Titans. It's crap). I just can't seem to tolerate Comic Supes. Gladiator is an arrogant bastard and he's got that "I'm not just better than you, I'm way better than you" attitude. I admit that he's a ripoff or homage depending on how you look @ it. The confidence-based powers thing is interesting also. I've been a fan ever since I saw him manhandle Juggs on the old X-Men show.

comic superman is by no means the most boring mainstream character... remember your including the likes of spidey, the xmen, the jla, the avengers (new and classic)

Not this again. Spidey's cooler than Supes in almost every way possible. & his books have outsold Supes more often than not. Marvel's been leading the industry for a long time. Spidey is one of the reasons why. Supes exists to make Batman look 1000x cooler by comparison.

all im saying is that being "cool" is not a prerequisite (sp?) of being a hero... superman is an alien with god like powers, who instead of choosing to conquer the world (which he could have easily done) he decided to protect it... he chose to... he doesnt gain anything from it, hes not moving toward a particular goal, he simply saves those who need to be saved... he abides by earths laws (which shows incredible humility) and actually gave his life to protect earth (against doomsday)... he is constantly filled with self doubt, he literally has the weight of the world on his shoulders... yet he soldiers on...

if you dont like superman thats fine (plenty of people dont), but if there is one comic character in existence who deserves respect its him...

as ive said before, he is one of the few people who batman actually truly respects and to an extent fears... and praise doesnt come higher than from batman...

but its been ongoing... to be honest i never found logan that interesting (for many reasons), but hes gone from chasing jean to chasing mj in marvel knights... the guy needs to learn to control himself... and when mj shot him down he went and stabbed spidey just because spidey told him to piss off away from mj... imagine if cyclops had done that...

Cap is a big time boyscout, but he's not ridiculous like Supes is w/all that power(vibrating his face = LAME). He's quite possibly the greatest leader in comics. Wolverine is an a$$hole, but he's interesting. His interactions w/Cyclops are funny to me. Even in the movies.

That stuff with the heroes you mention is occasional bad writing. No shame on the character. That glasses thing is always w/Supes. It's a part of him. Patriotism has been wrongfully associated with d**kheads like Bush which causes many to dislike it. True patriotism is admirable. Some guy whose name I can't remember said something like. "A true patriot supports his country always and his government when they deserve it." I used to dislike Cap when I was little because my dad didn't like him. As I got older and saw more of his shield throwin', Nazi punchin' exploits I realized how cool he was. He was cool as hell in Secret Wars back in the day.
