I took some friends with me to see TPM in the cinema, the ones who were casually aware of the OT said "is that the old dude with the cloak in the old ones?"
Even the ones who were totally unaware of the old ones saw he was a baddy, deriving this from "who was destroyed? master of apprentice" and then the focus on Palps.
