LAKELAND, Fla. (March 15) - A man found dead in a pond was the victim of a nearly nine-foot alligator that was captured and killed, the medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

Officials did not know what Don Owen, 56, a truck driver from Bartow, was doing at the pond about a dozen miles from his home. He had been missing since Wednesday when he was seen at a convenience store.

On Saturday his remains were found by several men fishing in Six Pound Pond. An autopsy determined he had been killed by the eight-foot, nine-inch alligator, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

Trappers caught the alligator Monday. Owen's forearm was found in its stomach.

Residents said they had fed the alligator, which is illegal and dangerous, said Gary Morse, spokesman for the wildlife commission.

Alligators normally flee from humans unless threatened or cornered, but alligators that have been fed by humans begin to look at them as a food source, he noted.

Since 1948, 330 alligator attacks have been documented by the commission. Sixteen have been fatal, including Owen's.

I think it sucks that they killed the alligator confused

Glad I don't live in Fla.

I read a story about a group of men in the jungles. The 2 men left for some reason and when they returned they couldn't find the other guy. After alittle while they found a huge Boa with a really large lump in the middle of it. Since they couldn't find their friend, they became curious about the snake. They cut it open and their was their friend inside..They figured he must of fallen asleep when the snake found him.

The pictures of this event were graphic and gross....

Goes to show ya, DON'T FALL ASLEEP IN THE JUNGLE..

AND

DON'T GO IN FLORIDA SWAMPS LANDS...They can smell a good meal when they find one...

Yea I saw them, it was a reticulated python

What exactly did the alligator do wrong? Where is the reasoning in killing it?

The reason that they killed the alligator is because for the last while people have been feeding it. Usually alligators just slip into the water when people approach, but because of the idiots who fed it, this alligator lost it's fear of humans and now saw them as a source of food.

I understand why they killed it, I just think that it's a shame that this all resulted from a bunch of morons who felt that it was a good idea to feed a 9 foot gator.

We might get some more reports about people being eaten in the near future!
The Australian police have released a crocodile near a vacation resort just recently. It was captured by a licenced crocodilehunter, who handed it over to the cops. They assumed the 1.80 meter animal was a relatively harmless ordinary river crocodile so they let it go free, while in fact this concerned a young saltwater crocodile.
The saltwater croc can grow over 6 meters in length, weighing over 500 kilograms. The adults prey on buffaloes, and there have even been occasions in which a saltie killed a great white shark! How's that for ya 'relatively harmless' croc.
They are trying to recapture it, but if they don't succeed in the next 3 years it's 'Lake Placid' all over!

Here's a photograph of one of these happy campers!

No shit! A one tonner? Tell me man, that motha would have godzilla on toast!

I guess this gives people a greater incentive of killing off these crocs more quickly now just like Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" caused the great extermination of all these great whites

People are always eating animals..I guess the animals decided to mimmic us...They are just doing what we do to them....

We taste like chicken, and they like chicken

Not really, predators mostly kill animals which fit up to the predators instinct's image of prey. That is why surfers get attacked by sharks, since when peddling around on their boards they look just like big seals from below (of course the sharks point of view) and also why bears and tigers get less interested in humans when the human stand tall on 2 legs and make lots of noise, since that distinctest them from normal prey.
Humans generally frighten predators away, but since they are also very stupid they get them selves in positions in which the pred is given no other choice than attack. When, for example, the animal is cornered, has young or is just plain starved (mostly our fault as well) and we make such easy pray.
Predators don't come to us, we are foolish enough to go to them and that's where the trouble starts.

Do u have the picture to show me?

crocodiles/alligators will kill 20 people a year in america alone, whilst a great white shark MIGHT kill 1 person a year in the entire world.

I still dont think they should kill the crocs, why not try and re-locate them?
