R.A. Salvatore

sai12
Well, I did a search for him and only came up with a few random posts. I'm surprised that there are not more people that read his books. I personally like his Forgotten Realms series the best. The ones with Drizzt and company. Just curious if there are any other R.A. Salvatore fans out there!

Come on Drizzt fans! Out of the shadows now!

Dizzle
Nice job sai. I personally love Salvatore (the Forgotten Realms stuff... don't know about much of his other stuff other than that he killed Chewbacca in a star wars book). The Wulfgar/Drizzt team is the ultimate in badassedness, though Cadderly gets himself pretty huge too. Does anyone know when the last Hunter's Blades book is comin out?

yerssot
yeah... I thought he wrote a star wars book, probably more than one too... haven't read the one you mentioned though Dizzle

sai12
Umm, the last Hunter's Blade book is out already. It came out last fall sometime.

The Two Swords

Now I know we have to wait a few years to get back to Drizzt and Co. I think the next book is Jaralaxle or Enteri...

Happy to see some RAS fans here! *squeals*

DCLXVI
From what I've read of his stuff in STAR WARS: THE NEW JEDI ORDER - Vector Prime, (the SW book alluded to above), he's a pretty good author. I believe he's also going to write another set after that series....I might pick up this other book series that the person above mentioned....

Clovie
i'm reading some of frogotten realms, but it is not written by him, just edited, or something.

sai12
It seems more people know him for his work on Star Wars than the Forgotten Realms books or even his own series....

Dizzle
Are you joking me... I've been kind of occupied with the WOT series lately, so I haven't gone near a bookstore in months. Thanks though, Imma need to go get a copy now...

After the end of Servant of the Shard i've been waiting for a "Life and Times of Jarlaxle" book, so that's good news.

sai12
Yeah, it will be interesting to read more about him....

TraptUnderIce
His Star Wars book was great. He did a great way of introducing a whole new storyline and conflict. Very good writer.

Doctor Strange
Salvatore is one of my favorite authors. Drizzt Do'urden is one the coolest book characters I've come across.

The only complaint I have is the lack of variety in fodder. He's always killing orcs. Why can't he fight a beholder or something?

sai12
There are just too many orcs....lol

Dizzle
And he's not always killin orcs. As a main battle thing, the Hunter's Blades trilogy and the Icewind Dale Trilogy are the only ones with huge orc armies. And Icewind Dale has Akar Kessel. Dark Elf trilogy its drow, mostly Zak, Legacy of the Drow he kills more drow, including the Baenre upstart. And oh yea, Artemis. Entreri. Da badass. I almost like him n Jarlaxle more than Drizzt. There really were a lot of orcs in Hunters Blades though. (just finished the Two Swords, actually) I'm so pissed now. Cuz I wanted this thing over god dammit. Salvatore doesn't let He Who is Gruumsh die like he's supposed to. I'm gonna have to wait like 4 years for the conclusion to the orc war. Cuz the Companionsof the Hall are gettin together to find some place before they beat up Obould. And there's gonna be a Jarlaxle/Entreri book before those.

zinh
Read the first 2 trilogies Icewind Dale and the drow prequel one. Haven't read past those though. Good books!

I hate having to wait so long. *cries*

I wanna know what happens...NOW!!

Dizzle
Honestly, Robert is killin me here. I swear I hate that big orc... Doesn't know when he's thoroughly gotten stabbed in the side. And shot in the eye. And dropped in a big crack in the earth. And stuff. You know what would be really badass though... If Mielikki "answered" Grummsh's gift to Obould by superpowering Drizzt... Then they have a huge god battle. Cuz there was the pegasus of Mielikki in the Dark Elf trilogy to guard Montolio's grave, and now Drizzt flies around on a pegasus and such... Oh it would be so badass...

sai12
Yeah, he really does need to end that whole thing with the orcs. Though, this could be the fault of Forgotten Realms, and not him. *shrug*

Dizzle
Is it me or did Drizzt seem not so pimpinly amazing in the Two Swords as compared to his usual self? Maybe I'm being nostalgic, but Drizzt really seems to kick the most ass in the Dark Elf Trilogy with Zak and his various Entreri fights...

Wickerman
Salvatore is an incredibly cool author. However, he's hurting the DnD world a whole freekin lot. You should go to www.wizards.com/boards some time and see how people feel about dhaerow (the REAL notation, meaning traitor in elven). For Christ's sake, Drizzt is an awesome character, but now every angry 15-17 year old goth player has a drow two swords-wielding ranger character sad

~wickerman~

Layden
Finally a R.A. Salvatore thread, i have read all of his books with having to do with drizzt and i just finished readind the demon wars saga by him wich are just amazing and are my favorite i love his work and there is also talk about a film based on the crystal shard but probaly just rumors. BUUUMMMEEERRR!

sai12
Yeah, it would be amazing if they made a movie out of the books. I agree that Drizzt has gotten "soft" in these last few books. I remember him kicking major ass back in the day. But I suppose emotionally he was pretty messed up in the Hunters Blade trilogy.

So when did everyone start reading R.A. Salvatore? I think I did when I was 13 years old. So bout 5 or 6 years ago! Doesn't seem so long, but it has been awhile!

Dizzle
I also started at age 13... Which is only like 3 years ago...

A movie would either be freaking amazing or would totally ruin the whole thing for me. Cuz they could do a small part of it (say the 1st Icewind Dale book, or Homeland. Seeing Menzoberranzan would be badass) I can see em pulling that off, but they could also get overambitious and cut off some good stuff. I think Homeland would be the coolest to see, for the opening takeover of the DeVir house and Drizzt's training...

sai12
Yeah, having a movie is really iffy. I don't think it would ruin the whole thing for me, cuz I love the books. And I fell in love with the books. If some stupid producer messed it up, then I wouldn't have to count that as part of series. It wouldn't be Bob's fault that some idiot salaughted his work.

I'm not quite sure what book or trilogy would be a good one to make into a movie. Course it has been a long long time ago since I read the Icewind Dale Trilogy (A long long time to me...anyway...). My favorite of the whole series is The Legacy. I loved that book. smile

Dizzle
Homeland has always been close to my heart as the first one I read... (I read these chronologically, not by written order) The Legacy was excellent as well, though it requires too much backstory for a reasonable length movie. I liked The Silent Blade too. Artemis is the badassest...

sai12
I wasn't really suggesting that it be made into a movie. I think the best for that would be one of the Icewind Dale or *blank stare* Omg, I forgot. Or maybe they dont' have a "trilogy" title for them. Erm, anyway I was referring to Homeland, Exile, Sojourn. Actually, maybe I prefer them staying away from the movie business...I dunno.

I read them in this order: Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Legacy of the Drow, Paths of Darkness, The Dark Elf Trilogy, and then Hunter's Blade Trilogy. Slightly out of order there.. Tee hee.

News on the newest book!! big grin

Promise of the Witch King is the title! WOOT! Its in a trilogy called The Sellswords it releases October 25, 2005!! YAY!

Go here for more info: http://rasalvatore.com/

I'm very excited!

Corranhorn
Ok guys but what about The Cleric Quintet??thats wa wicked series of books.

Yeah, I read those too! Own and everything!! Very good books, read them a few years back after I ran out of Drizzt & co books to read :P

Dizzle
Hehe, same here. I wanted to go kick Cadderly through the first book or two, but he did get quite huge after that.

Night Masks was my favorite out of the Quintet.

Back to Drizzt, I think the Sellswords looks like its gonna be more Drizzt action, sot he whole "Obould" mess might be cleared up soon after all. Hell yes!

Dizzle
Or I could be confused and that could be Artemis crouching (I'm lookin at the cover on rasalvatore.com) and the drow could be Jarlaxle... I dunno, either works.

sai12
Hehe, its just Artemis and Jarlaxle. The description says it is going to be about them! Weehoo! You as excited as I am? big grin

Dizzle
Hell yes!

I just saw the top one, didn't scroll down far enough.

Just wanted to let everyone know as well, the loose ends from the Hunters Blades Trilogy will be tied up with several short stories in the next year or so.

Promise of the Witch King (which is Book 2 in the Sellswords (Book 1 being Servant of the Shard)) is coming out this fall. These books are about Artemis and Jarlaxle, NOT Drizzt and the rest of the companions. Just in time for Bobs book signing tour in late October and going into November.

Check his website out for the full tentative location listing (He's even going into Canada this time round!)

Also, be sure to check out his messageboard as well.

We've got such notables as James Lowder (editor for some of the older Realms books, and writing a novel set in Bobs world of Corona), and we have Thomas M Reid poppin in occasionally (wrote book 2 for War of the Spider Queen, as well as his own Trilogy Scions of Arabbar). Christie Golden shows up occasionally, as does Paul S Kemp (Last book in the WotSQ as well as the Erivas Cale Trilogy).

Unfortunately, ezBoard was hacked into and we lost all the threads that Bob participated in, but ...

Anyways, this year is Promise of the Witch King, next year is book 3 in the sellswords, the year after that (2007), we will see a return to Drizzt and companions

Are you the laethyn from the boards? THE LAETHYN?

Hehe, I was a "big" part of the boards back in the day (several years ago) now I just pop in from time to time to see what's going on. Doubt you even know who I am around there. You're even "new" compared to me...I suppose but you're there much more often than I.

And yes, my posting the link to Bob's site was in fact a ploy to make some of KMC people go check out the boards there...*giggle*

Jeez 2007 though? That's forever! *whines*

Wickerman
if they make a Homeland movie, i really hope they use CGI or whatever to recreate Menzo like Lockwood saw it:

~wickerman~

sai12
That is a very cool picture! Lockwood is an amazing artist! That would make a cool movie...*nod nod*

Wickerman

the consequences would be devastating to the DnD community though, trust me. 15 year old "whats ur neim plz kthx" kids would storm the Pen and Paper world of DnD to play a character identical with Drizzt or Wulfgar or whatever.

The only good that would come of it would be a world wide recognition of the hard work Salvatore put into the books.

~wickerman~

sai12
Since that wouldn't affect me at all..I'm still all for it! :P

Selfish...I know, but hey...I wanna see a movie!!

sai12
Now that is just unkind. Truly...let the fans have what they want!!

Dizzle
MOVIES!!! But good ones. Not crappy ones. Hire some obscure but amazingly talented European actors. The question is, what kind of accent would be cool on all the drow...

Also, there's probly already plenty of kids looking for Drizzt characters on DND anyway... I vote you take advantage of the opportunity and come up with an uber anti-elf ranger character. But that's only one man's opinion, I guess.

And owch, banana....

French are out (needs strong accentuation of the letter "R". I'd probably suggest German or Austrian or something like that.

sai12
How bout we just make it a movie like the Incredibles. All computer animated? That way we can make the characters as we like. Just need to find voice actors then!!

I think it sounds cool anyway...

Do I really wanna get banned from there when I've been going there for YEARS.

Who are you on the forum there? *stare*

And why?

sai12
Here's what I said on Movie Call....

Yes, I have to agree. I metioned this type of thing on another forum and someone replied and said that I would likely get banned from here.

I'm sure it would be cool to have a live action version of the books, but doing an animation would make...it easier.

The characters are so hard to match up with real actors. By doing it with animation/pixar/whatever type stuff then we could have the characters closer to their actual descriptions. The action sequences could be more easily done as well as creating any of those hard to imagine characters.

Just my two cents on that...Please don't ban me!

Huh? *blink* Whatcha talking about?

Dizzle
Somehow Drizzt came up in a comic book fight in the Comic Book vs. Forum. So I advertised this thread...

midnightunicorn
Well, hello all, I'm just forwarning you, I skipped right to the end of this post. Since this apparently started as a 'Where are all the Salvatore fans?' thread I'm going to stick with that.
I have to ask, am I the only one who liked Drizzt best as either the Hunter or doubting himself? I mean, he was always too smug about 'acknowledging' himself, and being right, it was almost sickening. Now he realized, or should have, there is a demon inside him, and that is what I like. emotional angst inflicted upon oneself

sai12
Hmm, I see. Well, they are making Homeland into a graphic novel. Or I think that's the one they're doing. My resource is the message board on his site. Which by the way, I have not been banned from. wink

I don't have a fav "Drizzt". I personally like reading the books to see what kind of new character development will be done. Drizzt is a growing character still, and I fell in love with him from book one!

Dizzle
I actually liked younger Drizzt the best. The loner/rebel in Menzoberranzan, but not the Hunter yet. Though I dunno, the fights are always better with the Hunter, but Emo just pisses me off a lot, so...

I didn't mind "defender of justice" Drizzt. That side of Drizzt is always very set into his ideals. The first Hunter experience was out of necessity, which I thought made Drizzt absolutely badass.

The second time was basically out of grieving for his friends, which was a direct consequence of the strength of Drizzt's ideals from "defender of justice" Drizzt. He was forced to face the end result of the fact that he will outlive his friends, and that, coupled with the pain of failure, scared him into a state of instinctual survival. I didn't like that as much, because part of the Drizzt I liked was that he was never one to let something like fear affect him so. In essence, Drizzt was pissed at the world and was going on killing spree until 2 elves showed him the error of his ways.

There you have it folks, my wordy words of wisdom on the Hunter...

As to Drizzt simply doubting himself, that just makes him more human. The huge swings like the return of the Hunter didn't work as well with me, but the littler things, like killing drow and such, were just part of character depth and development. And even in regards to the Hunter, this is Salvatore's character, not mine. And it does make him a hell of a lot more relatable.

And oh yea, my new sig kicks ass, don't you agree?

sai12
Nice long explanation!! :P

And yes your sig is awesome!!

Shadow_King
i have been to my local book store and they have this one shelf filled with his books and i was wondering if i wanted to start geting into this series which book should i read first???

sai12
I suggest starting with Streams of Silver. Though it isn't cronologically first it is the first book published....you get a better feel for all the characters by reading it first instead of just Drizzt in Homeland!

Shadow_King
ok thanks for the help.

sai12
Oh yeah no problem! smile I really hope you enjoy them!

Shadow_King
jsut by looking at the covers of the book it looks good.

Dizzle
I'd personally start with the Crystal Shard over Streams of Silver, cuz that's the first one Salvatore wrote. It just seems like it would be less confusing starting at the same place as Salvatore intended. Though of course, I started with Homeland and built up my Drizzt fanboyness before even meeting Bruenor and the rest, so...

sai12
Oi! Did I make a mistake! Oh dear! Maybe it does go Crystal Shard first....Oh my oh my! I can't believe I did that!

Well, we have enough Drizzt fangirls/fanboys out there so no need to subjugate the world to another :P

I'm terribly sorry for my mistake. I suppose I should have looked at my books to see which came first....I just thought...well, I thought wrong that's all there is to it!

So very sorry sad

Shadow_King
no problem.... i was close to buying streams of silver but then i noticed that crystal shard was the first book so i bought that one.

sai12
Eh hehehe..*blushes* Runs off*

Dizzle
It's ok Sai, we still love you...

sai12
YAY! I'm loved! Love love love!! *happy dance*

Shadow_King
well crystal shards was good.

sai12
You're done already? What a speedy little reader you are! smile

Shadow_King
well it was a very good book.. i just kept on reading.

Shadow_King
Now after the icewind dale triligoy where do i go next??

sai12
The next book to read would be The Legacy its part of the Legacy of the Drow. Here...I'll just post them all up right now!

Icewind Dale Trilogy
The Crystal Shard
Streams of Silver
The Halfling's GEm

Legacy of the Drow
The Legacy
Starless Night
Siege of Darkness
Passage to Dawn

Paths of Darkness
The Silent Blade
The Spine of the World
Sevant of the Shard (Actually, I think they moved this to a different set)
Sea of Swords

The Hunter's Blade Trilogy
The Thousand Orcs
The Lone Drow
The Two Swords

The Dark Elf Trilogy
Homeland
Exile
Sojourn

Looks good to me....For now. I know I don't have the new series...cuz I can't remember what its called at this moment.

Shadow_King
ok thanks for the help sai

Dizzle
Just as a note, Dark Elf trilogy is actually chronologically before the Icewind Dale trilogy... I'd suggest reading that second.

And yeah, Servant of the Shard is actually the first book of the new trilogy.

sai12
It really doesn't mattter at all where you read the Dark Elf Trilogy....I read it at the end. I just wrote it up there at the end cuz I wrote them kinda in the order I read them. Actually, I believe I read the Dark Elf Trilogy after Paths Of Darkness. *shrug*

Personally, it doesn't matter. Its a good story to read but it doesn't hurt or help the entire story either way smile

Yeah, that's what I was saying :P I said they moved it to another set. Its the Sellswords series. Tee hee!!

Dizzle
Seems like Entreri was actually turning towards a true neutral kind of guy at the end of Servant of the Shard... Though Jarlaxle might not let him stay out of trouble. Thoughts on the lord of all coolness, Artemis Entreri, going to the good side? He's always had his little code of morals, but he was still quite the cold hardened killer.

sai12
I have serious doubts of that happening. Though...you never know. Salvatore might do something like that to throw us off!!

Shadow_King
Unbelievable drizzt didnt kill enteri in the third book of icewind dale triligoy???

sai12

Oh crap!! Sorry! We didnt' mean to give out plot points!! *begs for forgiveness*

Well, don't you want to see more of the lovable assassin? Tee hee!

Shadow_King
i never really liked him... but since he's turning good i guess thats great.

sai12
HE isn't TURNING GOOD!!

Don't talk of such evil...*mutter*

Shadow_King
oh ok

sai12
So what have you decided to read next??

Shadow_King
first i have to get the halfling gems then i might go for "path of darkness" Quadilogy series or "hunters blade" triligoy series....

sai12
I would read them in order!

The only one I don't think goes in order is The Dark Elf trilogy...smile

Shadow_King
of course i would read them in order...

sai12
Alright, good to hear....It just sounded liek you were going to choose between the two...which woudl be bad :P

Shadow_King
wait you mean that path of darkness comes before hunter blade ????

sai12
Yeah...didn't you read that list I put up there on the other page?? I put them in order smile

Shadow_King
oh i thought you put them in order of how you read them...

sai12
Well, yeah....Cuz its how they're supposed to be read.

The only one (I feel so repetitive) that can be read outta order is the Dark Elf Trilogy. Otherwise the story progresses along throughout the books.

If you skip around or go ahead, you will reveal plot points and such that you don't wanna know so far ahead.

Also it would be just as easy just to check the publication dates. Or check the inside jacket or inside the books to see how they are read smile

Shadow_King
i see thanks for the tip.

sai12

Shadow_King
what about the war of the spider queen series and the other series.

sai12
Those aren't part of the Drizzt story. War of the Spider Queen has differen't authors, but are under the "direction"(?) of Salvatore. And Corona (The Demon Awakens...etc) are another series of his. Completely made up by Salvatore. It is his own fantasy world.

I have only read the 1st book in that series. I just couldn't get into it. Took me a month to even finish it. Maybe I was too young to appriciate it then.

Anyhow, that's what I think on those ones. Oh there is also the Clerical Quintet, which are very good as well! They are in the Forgotten Realms setting. And use characters that you have/wil run into in the Drizzt series! smile

And you can't forget some of his earlier works like "The Woods out Back" or "Sword of Bedware*sp*"(Wrong title...I know itsad ) trilogy. Ugh, I can't quite remember the title to that one. Some of those books are pretty good, I'd loook into them if I were you.

NOw see what you've done? I went and was all long winded. *sigh*

Sorry, I don't know more about the War of the Spider Queen. *sigh*

Shadow_King
have you read any of the other forgotten realms books done by other authors??

sai12
Well, not really? I did read some of Elaine Cunningham's books. The ones about the Daughter of Gomph*sp* Baenre*sp* (Sorry, I have no books here to look it up! sad)

And I have a few of the short stories ones. I think that's about it. Though I have read some books by Ed Greendwood, though they weren't forgotten realms. Can't remember their titles now either. Jeez I'm drawing a total mind blank here *sigh*

Shadow_King
i see

sai12
What about you? Have you read any other Forgotten Realms books?

Shadow_King
nope.

laethyn
By the way, yes, I am THE Laethyn lol

Just thought I'd pop in and let everyone know that Bob has made a reappearance at his messageboard to create an interactive thread. ie, he is visiting for a limited time to answer questions of his fans.

He is also going on a book signing tour this fall, to sync up with the release of The Promise of the Witch King (from what I hear, it's a fantastic read!).

Also, if you haven't heard/checked it out, Tim Seeley (Devil's Due publishing (better known for his G.I. Joe comics)) has done some fantastic work on the Dark Elf Trilogy comic book. yes, that's right, a comic book. Book 2 of Homeland has already been released, book 3 coming soon (each novel is split into 3 comic books.) He is hard at work beginning the comic adaptation of Exile.

Cheers all!

ps. The Crimson Shadow Trilogy is one of my favorite reads by Bob. Fast paced, short, helluva lot of fun! They include The Sword of Bedwyr, Luthiens Gamble, and The Dragon King (I believe). also, check out his Chronicles of Ynis Aielle.

pss The name sounds famailiar Sai, but I've seen alot of names come and go lol It's been 8 years since my first visit to the boards. And I'm still stuck there sad lol

laethyn
By the way, if you want a really detailed chronological order list, go to the RASalvatore.com messageboard, then, in the announcements area, there is a thread there with the full listing. (I'd post a link, but apparently I'm not well known enough lol)

It includes all of the novels up to now, and all of the short stories (except for one, I'm not quire sure of the Chrono placement just yet)

sai12
Hehe, its more than okay that you don't know who I am! Tee hee!

I rarely go back to the salvatore message boards anymore. And when I do, I just look through and hardly post.

I suppose I could have just pointed them to your list of books there instead of copying the list out of one of my books! Just don't think well enough. I hope that everyone who visits this thread will also go visit Salvatore's site.

laethyn
Another happening:

Bob has just made a reappearance on his messageboard, taking questions from fans.

By the way, I also found this quote from Bob, during an interview with the folks at DelRey:

SnakeEyes
Good author, bitches...

sai12
Well, I finally (can't believe it took me THIS long...) made a post on the interactive thread! I was happy to see that he is actually there! YAY! And what's more important is that he is answering everyone's questions...no matter how stupid some of them appear to be!

Four pages of questions and answers thus far!

And I feel like such a dork! I asked such a dumb question too!

Though I will excitedly check up on that page daily to read new questions and when he comes around, Bob's answers!

Is that the link/thread you're speaking of there? It is quite the list! I suggest everyone checks it out. I think there is something on there that I have not read yet...:O

Now that I see the user ID, yes, I certainly do recognize it. Ahem, I know everything that goes on on that board (if it's done in public stick out tongue ) lol

And yeah, that's the main thread with the chronological order. Still not laid out the way I'd like, but with limited layout abilities due to ezBoard, it'll have to do.

Oi! I'm recognized! Woot!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of ezboards either no expression

*pulls thread from the trash*

Hmm..how'd this get down in there??

*dusts it off*

Here we are! Anyone else excitedly awaiting Promise of the Wtich King? I know I am!!

Does anyone know a way I can email Salvatore? I wanted to ask something of an established Author, and he is my favorite... email me at [email protected]

Interesting story PotWK was. I'm curious as to how things will turn out in the RotP.

I'm predicting a clash of the families here. Considering that Drizzt and Cattie-Brie are together, and considering Artemis has already jumpped the gun with the half-elf chick, Calihye (not sure if spelled correctly), I'm seeing a sort of rivalrey between not just Drizzt and Entreri, but their children, and their children's children in the near future.

To drag this back up from the abyss

First off, if anyone wants to email RASalvatore his email address is [email protected] (note, there is a missing letter in his email address)

Now, on to the news:

If you haven't read Bobs Demonwars novels yet, go do so. NOW!

Not only are we getting more Demonwars novels, but Demonwars comics, AND they have confirmed that there is a Demonwars movie/TV deal with merchandise.

Cheers

With the recommendation of a friend I just recently started getting my first R.A. Salvatore experience by reading 'The Legend of Drizzt Book 1: Homeland'. It's very intriguing how it goes into the Drow culture and Drizzt's perspective on the way his race interprets and carry outs life. I'm looking forward to starting Book 2 soon.
