Deano
i dunno if this has been done before..i done a search but coudnt find anythin

i know it will be hard but write your top 10 favourite songs of all time down

rate the persons choices above you also..

in no particular order..mine are:

1: Scorpions - Winds of change
2: Blue oyster cult - dont fear the reaper
3: Tom Petty - Learning to fly
4: Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
5: Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
6: Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
7: Metallica : Nothing else matters
8: Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the jar
9: Tool - The patient
10: Dire straights - brothers in arm

Myth
It is way to hard for me to do top 10 songs of all time. Hell it is hard for me to do top 10 current songs or even favorite single song of all time.

Deano
try TRY!!!

Alpha Centauri
I'll get back to this one.

Will do it soon.

-AC

Ou Be Low hoo
In no particular order...

No Woman, No Cry - Bob
Changes - 2 Pac
Scar Tissue - Chillis
Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N Roses
High And Dry - Radiohead
Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye
In My Life - The Beatles
Redemption Song - Bob
Suspicious Minds - Elvis
Regulate - Warren G

Those all classics...

Deathblow
Maybe so, but it's not about picking classics, it's about picking your own personal favorites.

Me and a couple of friends of mine, being total dweebs and that, made our top 10 discs just recently, to laugh at each others selections and stuff. So here's the tracklist from that in order:

1. Led Zeppelin - Ten Years Gone
2. Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have
3. Opeth - Face Of Melinda
4. Tool - Stinkfist
5. Rage Against The Machine - Settle For Nothing
6. Smashing Pumpkins - Thru The Eyes Of Ruby
7. Pixies - Gouge Away
8. Willhaven - I've Seen My Fate
9. De La Soul - Held Down
10. A Perfect Circle - The Package

Myth
Here is my shot at it. It probably isn't fully accurate and would change as I think about it every day.

1. Down with the Sickness - Disturbed (This was such a bad ass song years and years ago yet I still do not tire of it)
2. Basket Case - Green Day (The song that got me into GD way back in elementary school)
3. Superbeast - Rob Zombie
4. Toxicity - SOAD
5. Hitchin' A Ride - Green Day
6. Dragula - Rob Zombie
7. Rape Me - Nirvana
8. Halo - Soil
9. Turn Me On Mr. Deadman - Union Underground
10. Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson

Honorable Mention - Money for Nothing - Dire Straights (sorry, I listened to this song more than any other when I was growing up in the 80s)

In all reality, that list would be mostly filled with GD since I've listened to them longer than any other band and Rob Zombie/SOAD would fill some too. I just thought I should squeeze some other bands in there as well. That is why I thought it would be hard to create my list.

MetallicaT
(welcome home) sanitarium -metallica
harvester of sorrow -metallica
foreclosure of a dream -megadeth
i'm broken -pantara
one -metallica
forty six & 2 -tool
war pigs -blacksabbath
down in a hole -alice in chains
hurt -nine inch nails
look to your orb for the warning -monster magnet

Red Superfly
Welcome To The Jungle - Guns and Roses
Under The Bridge - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Come As You Are - Nirvana
Free Bird - Lynard Skynyrd
Waterfall - The Stone Roses
Cutt Off - Kasabian
How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths
A Song For The Dead - Queens Of The Stone Age
Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
Back In Black - AC/DC

I think we all agree that this list is the best ever.

Deathblow

Eh? What's wrong with that? Is it wrong for me to like a bunch of songs because they are famous? Is it wrong that I own all the albums of these bands and these are the ones I like the best from them? WTF?

Would it be any better than intentionally naming a load of obscure songs - just to appear cool, rather than being honest? Why SHOULD I have to like obscure songs that nobody has heard of. I have tons of albums, with tons of songs I like - I can't help it if I like the songs that became singles the most. For f**ks sake.

I can't win. Take Nevermind. How many songs off that became famous singles? Damn near all of them. It ain't my fault they are famous.

As far as rock music is concerned, there's a reason as to why they are famous singles.

WTF is up with that?

Deano
what do ya think of my selection...it was hard for me to write down 10

And I don't, because all the singles you mentioned are overplayed signature pieces for the bands. Try not to have a shit-fit over nothing.

Signature tunes rock!

Not always. Led Zeppelin's signature tune is Stairway To Heaven, which is, without doubt, their worst song.

The Clash's signature tune is London Calling, an ok song, but dwarfed by most of their other stuff.

Radiohead's signature tune is Creep, a boring song which doesn't deserve to be the only knowledge most people have of the band.

Point is, it's better to dig deep and find the really meaningful, important songs that bands will have poured their heart and soul into, rather than just settling for sing along hooks and catchy guitar riffs. Hooks can fade if overplayed, emotion and complexity cannot.

Afro Cheese
I agree Stairway to Heaven annoys the hell outta me. It got old the first 1000000000 times I heard it.

Top ten off the top of my head:

grandmaster flash - the message
thelonius monk - in walked bud
tool - schism
a perfect circle - the noose
johnny cash - fulsome prison blues
ice cube - it was a good day
common sense - i used to love her
beatles - while my guitar gently weeps
public enemy - fear of a black planet
radiohead - paranoid android

No order. Tried to mix it up a bit. I know I will probably disagree with the list later, but oh well.. no biggie.

thier worst song? What the f**k? r u insane?

Deathblow
No, I'm not a slave to the 'classics' like most people. Stairway To Heaven is an annoying, overplayed corny piece of crap. It's bubblegum prog. Ten Years Gone, Nobody's Fault But Mine, What Is And What Should Never Be, Bring It On Home, When The Levee Breaks, THAT is quality Led Zeppelin. Anyone with any knowledge of Zep knows this.

MildPossession
I'm with Alpha, I can't name ten. I love so much music.

The lyrics to one of my favorite songs, 'Freedom (Part 2)' by The Beautiful Girls:

Well I may not be you and you not me,
but between us there are certain similarities.
Like I belive in love and the Devil will come,
looking for us if we wrong some one.

Freedom, is ours to hold.
It's just a struggle in your mind,
to keep your soul, keep your soul.
And it's old, yes it's old,
it's just a struggle in your mind to keep your soul.

Well how long you're down,
depends how you rise.
And life has a meaning so open your eyes.
The seeds that we speed into life to be trees,
will soon become fallen,
if their roots aren't deep.

Yeah, I have to admit, the balance of my musical interest has been tipped into hip-hop over the last year or so, but as a genre I guess it's failed to produce as many tracks that have effected me greatly. I just find hip-hop in general more accessible than most modern rock music at the moment.

Iron Galaxy would've been #11 or 12 for sure. And that De La track is a slept on classic in my view, it's probably the most uplifting song I've ever heard.

Anyone else notice that El-P manages to sort of have a tension builder in a hip hop beat, so awesome. It starts like at 1:50 into 'Rasberry Fields', where he says "see what happens when you **** with the wrong people, might get dragged into a kitchen, cut up", brilliant. I want more shit like that in a hip hop beat, more variation.

Alpha Centauri
That's what's always lacked in hip hop. There's a misconception that due to the medium being lyrically/vocally focused that the music has to just be backing. If more MC's used music effectively it'd be very interesting.

-AC

Refused
I love the music the way it is now but it would be cool to see it expand musically. But using live bands sort of kills a crucial quality to it imo, you can't get El-P's signature dark tones with a live band. Just sticking a guitar solo in the middle of it isn't going to make it interesting. I can't imagine how people could expand it musically. I know that there is hip hop acts that use live bands but they don't take full advantage of it.

Alpha Centauri
Get the right musicians and you can create absolutely any tone. Any existing music is possible if you have the right musicians. If it's made on a computer it can be done live.

Think about it, hip hop artists rhyme almost all the way through their songs. Singers don't do that all the time, they stop and the band play a bit before they come back in. MC's should start doing that. Obviously not as much as it IS a vocally focused genre, but still apply it.

-AC

Refused
I see what you're saying but i'd also like to see a hip hop producer make complex hip hop beats with variations of melodies, tempo, you know, all that good stuff. I'd like to see that too.

RJD2 has a song like that with Copywrite, its done really well. i think its called june, i could upload it if anyone who hadn't heard it wanted to. Copywrite has two verses, one at the beginning and one towards the end, its somewhere around six minutes long.

Alpha Centauri
No amount of computer technology is ever going to be as emotional or complexed as a great band, but it would be nice to see them develop.

I think it's because most people who play a lot of instruments feel as though they're too talented to rhyme, or people who can't play feel that they should rhyme, if only for the fact that they can't do anything else. If more MC's were able to play instruments well enough to make their own music (anything done on a computer can be done with instruments) we'd have a very interesting change in the hip hop scene.

-AC

Deathblow
Yeah I'd like to hear producers such as Amp Live who incorporate live instrumentation into their music do that more often.

Aside from that, I think only a few producers possess the kind of style to pull it off; El-P, Blockhead, Shadow, Prefuse, RJ, Madlib and maybe Stoupe (although taking Paz off the track completely wouldn't be such a bad idea).

A limited thinker is still a thinker. Which is a step above you it seems wink.

That's for the GDF or PhF, not the MuDF. No machine will ever create music as emotional as humans because they'll never experience music as emotionally as we do. Simple as.

Instruments in hip hop is a bad idea. Rap beats are so simplistic that using a full band to perform one is like using the swat team to hand out speeding tickets. There's really no need. Hip hop beats rely on distortion more than anything else so instruments really aren't necessary. The point of hip hop is and has always been about DJ-ing and rapping.. changing that would be nothing less than wiping the genre out of existence.

It's just a different art form is all.. it's not about a demonstration of music theory it's all about the words and the style which is why I don't really object anymore when people claim that it's not real music.

Besides that when bands do play actual hip hop and not just rock with heavy hip hop influences, it's just flat out dull. The same couple notes over and over in common time? What's the point of even learning the instrument? Honestly, who prefers The Root's instrumentals over RZA?

Refused
"hip hop is and has always been about DJ-ing and rapping.. changing that would be nothing less than wiping the genre out of existence."

So maybe a new genre might branch out of hip hop if the music expanded. It wouldn't have to use MC's, the music could just be sort of hip hop inpired. When i listen to El-P's music, it gives me a hint of what the music could become, i'd just like to see something more come out of it is all. It wouldn't have to be done on instruments but i'd just like to see it become more complex.
