What do you guys think are the best war movies of all time? :dance

*LEGATO*
Hmm.. Probably Black Hawk Down for me..
Saving Private Ryan was pretty good too.. ^^
Platoon is the latest one that I've seen.. It was just alright..

PRO-PAIN
The Longest Day
Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List
The Guns Of Navarrone
Sands Of Iwo Jima
Patton
The Great Escape
A Bridge Too Far
PT 109
The Flying Tigers

Pork Chop Hill
The Green Berets

Braveheart
Troy

*LEGATO*
Apocolypse Now Redux was suck.. I didn't like it at all..

Red Superfly
Star Wars lol

*LEGATO*
LoL.. I'm sure you know what he means when he asks for the best war movies..

PINBALL
Yeah my favorite are Saving Private Ryan Black Hawk down the band of brothers series and we were soldiers

Cinemaddiction
"Black Hawk Down" isn't a war movie. It's about a downed chopper/failed rescue in Somalia. "Schindler's List", I wouldn't include that either, personally. That dealt more with the Holocaust than actual combat. "Full Metal Jacket", meh. The 2nd half of the film is the only part that deals with war, and honestly, it's not all that great. It's more an individual character study. "Apocalypse Now" bored me to tears, and that too was more of a character study in Sheen, and him witnessing the atrocities of war.

That said:

Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War)
Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers
Pearl Harbor (**** you, I loved it)
Platoon
Manchurian Candidate (1962 - One of the few Cold War films)

BackFire
Platoon, hands down. The most realistic depiction of the Vietnam war ever in a film.

I also love Full Metal Jacket with a passion, but platoon is the better film.

Red Superfly
What about Pearl Harbour? laughing out loud

My vote goes to Platoon.

Cinemaddiction
I said I loved "Pearl Harbor". I don't care what others think, honestly. If I did, I wouldn't have lasted here this long.

BackFire
Keep in mind, the thread is "Best" war movie, not "Your favorite" war movies.

Pearl Harbour barely even falls in the "war movie" genre, it's more of a sappy soap opera love story with WW2 as a plot device.

Have you ever seen Hamburger Hill? It's a more realistic version of Vietnam than either Platoon or Full Metal Jacket.

The original 1962 version was themed around the Cold War. It's more "war" related in the political/conspiratorial sense, but is more of a war film than "Schindler's List", IMO.

Most new age "war" films, even those that are "true", have some sort of underlying story, no matter if it's sappy or dramatic, or all blood and guts. I still think "Pearl Harbor" is a war epic, because the main focus is the war itself, and considering the actual LENGTH of the damn thing, which can really only be rivaled by "A Bridge Too Far".

Wasn't impressed by hamburger hill, platoon is known as the more realistic of the two. Everyone I know who was in the vietnam war says that it not only captures the insanity of the combat, but the self destructing mentality that a lot of people had. Plus everything that happened in Platoon happend to Oliver Stone while he was serving in the war.

tabby999
yeah for me it'd be:
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Apocolypse Now
Hamburger Hill
Full Metal Jacket (despite the fact only half the movie was in the ACTUAL war, i still think they training half helped show the mentality and develop the characters)

eleveninches
There are really too many to mention

KharmaDog
The Great Escape is a great movie.

For realism you'd have to go with Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and parts of Saving private Ryan.

Two of my favourites are also Patton and The Devil's Brigade.

IceWithin
Platoon
Tears of the Sun
Pearl Harbour
Windtalkers

**** I love those four movies, there are other great war movies too, like:

Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers

MildPossession
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
Schindler's List
The Deer Hunter
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Apocalypse Now
The Bridge On The River Kwai
Glory
Tae Guk Gi (The Brotherhood of War)
Manchurian Candidate
Casshern (has war elements in the film)
Das Boot

Those are some favourites.

Omegaman
Hamburger Hill was much better than Platoon and was based on the true story of taking that hill by US Airborne! Saving Private Ryan was awesome too!

Here are some others:

-Midway
-Sands of Iwo Jima
-Bridge on the River Kwai
-Dirty Dozen
-Big Red One
-Boys in Company C
-Band of Brothers(TV movie but awesome)
-Pork Chop Hill
-Memphis Belle

BlazingBarrells
ALL TIME BEST hmmm, SPR hands down. EVery single aspect of that movie is pretty much authentic. Minus parts of the storyline. The battles, never been done better, never been done more realistic, and personally i dont think it will ever be bested. I could go on forever about why this movie is the best war film of all time but i wont write a novel.

Deer Hunter, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, Hamburger Hill was pretty good, Casualties of War was pretty good. Windtalkers was cheesy, but had somke fun scenes.

I agree with Cinadd about BHD. It is a combat movie, not a war movie. I havent seen Tae Guk Gi, but i really really want to. If anyone has seen it, send me a message about the movie, and give it all away i dont care, i wanna know about the battles and stuff, i heard it was close to SPR but not as harsh. !!!

MildPossession
Oo I forgot Dirty Dozen and Casualties of War, I enjoyed those too.

Hamburger Hill may have had a more realistic take on battle, but there is more to war then just the fighting, and Platoon captures the mentality of the soldiers of the Vietnam War far more then any other film.

Crazy POTC Fan
I'd have to say Pearl Harbor. It's based on a real story and it's very gripping. Who else agrees?

BlazingBarrells
the love story wasnt all that fascinating to me. I think they should have made the movie like this. The first half is the political gambling and the second half is the attack and then it should ed with our planes flying to Japan with the atom bombs and through the credits it would show live footage of it. i personally would have enjoyed that much more.

black robb
Platoon

PINBALL
Yeah i did mean the best not favorite i forgot I would have to say the best all time is eather We Were Soldiers or Saving Private Ryan

*LEGATO*
I don't see anything really good about Apocolypse Now..

Cinemaddiction
Me either, personally. Try stomaching "Redux", which is closer to 3 hours of the damn movie. The whole thing just seems like such a non-event, and then the non-climax with crazy ass voodoo Marlon Brando hidden in a temple stating the obvious.

BackFire
Agreed, always thought Apocolypse Now was way to silly or a war movie. Didn't care for it either.

BlazingBarrells
the best scene in apoc now was the helicopter assault. where robert duvall stated some of the best lines in a movie ever. i love the smell of napalm in the morning and where is my surfboard!! lol even though the over all movie sucked, that scene is a classic

*LEGATO*
yea.. the guy talks too much

windtalkers isnt cheesy mad

Rapscallion
i'd have to say Schindlers List hands down. i also liked lawrence of Arabia.

Cinemaddiction
"Windtalkers" was silly, IMO, and honestly, not really a war film. It's along the same lines of "Black Hawk Down". Couple of marines are dropped in to protect Navajo troops once they take their smoke signal gimmick, and the rest of the movie is a pissed off, drunk Nic Cage. I love the guy, but this is John Woo's worst. I liked "Paycheck" better than this, even.

MildPossession
I have yet to see Windtalkers, does it concentrate, realistically, on the Navajo people or are they just a small part of the film?

Cinemaddiction
Reviews said the surprise was that the thematic elements were geared towards the Navajo people and their methods of communication, and how "fair" it was to them, in this instance, smoke signals. The WW2 backstory is secondary.

BlazingBarrells
Its funny how the backstory was larger than the navajo indian scenes. There was BARELY any language, one ten second clip of the japanese wondering if it was english underwater. IMO the movie is about the war, or should i say the fighting of the war, than the indian story.

travesty87
I liked Enemy at the Gates

jnr hiphop
It's heaps dramatic..

And I think that a war movie shouldn't all be guns firing, apparently that's what you people like, I think it should have a higher plot, windtalkers did have one, other than simply ppl killing each other

I think. Hamburger hill is a place where there was a big battle in Vietnam. But i never heard of that movie

Lord_Andres
Well when considering war movies I always 'divid' the genre into 2, see I don't classifie them as 1, 1 part I call prehistoric war movies, Spartacus, Braveheart, aso, and the other part is what most of you guys refer to as war movies, Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket aso, well I'm gonna make 2 lists, one prehistoric and one list of recent war's WW1-2, Vietman

Prehistoric War Movies

1.El Cid
2.Spartacus
3.Braveheart
4.300 Sparatans
5.Kingdom Of Heaven

War Movie List

1.Lawrence of Arabia
2.Stalingrad And Apocalypse Now tie for nr.2 spot (btw why hasint anyone mentioned Stalingrad mad )
3.Full Metal Jacket
4.Schindler's List And Saving Private Ryan tie for nr.4 spot
5.Paths of Glory

Yayaya I know I didint mention Platoon, and some other great once, reason is because I ahvint seen them in AGES I'm currently trying to get a hold of all the great war movies I can get a hold of, so my mind may change in the next couple mounts if not weeks.

It depends what you apreciate in a war movie:
Honor, heroism, the real suffering or special effects ( because there are people who watch movies only for this ) or else.....

Good war movies: The Pianist ( Excelent movie)

LOTR..a war movie? What the f**k?

In fact, "Black Hawk Down" isn't a war movie, either. That's a common misperception, though. A good movie nonetheless.

jnr hiphop
Star Wars.. a war movie?

general-pain
Enemy at the Gates. Very acurrate retelling of the Battle of Stanlingrad(the Russians used suicide waves often in the early part of the war). Band of Brothers was very good, also read the book. The Omaha beach assult in "The Longest Day" is just horrendous. See Saving Private Ryan for a more accurate look.

faradayslaw
War of the Worlds..................... hey, we're fighting martians in it.

general-pain
The Longest Day should be called the Longest movie. Me and my dad rented it one night, and there were two tapes. We started watching around 7:00 p.m. and it ended at almost midnight.

general-pain
I don't thnk War of the Worlds counts as a real "war" movie. My definition of a war movie is one that takes palce during an actual conflict.

Does Schindler's List count as a war movie?

Lord_Andres
Oh if that where the case then Stallone's Victory would be classified as war?

general-pain
I said in my opinion. And no I mean as in an actual event that happened. An example of my definition of War movie would be Enemy at the Gates. Most of what they showed in that film happened. There was an actual sniper duel during the Battle of Stalingrad and both of the names in the film are their actual names(I read alot about WW2).The Russians were notorious for using human tidal waves and shooting their own men for retreating. If the Russians launched a 300 man assult against a fortified Nazi position, and all 300 of them died, then they would find 300 more men and have the, attack the same position.

Now they really need to make a movie about the Battle of the Hutgen Forest. Men were involved at Omaha said that the Hurtgen was even worse.

Lord_Andres

general-pain
The hill was called Mamayev Kurgan and if you go their today, you canactually see bits of bone sticking out of the ground. I forgot the name of the man you mentioned. The city is now called Voldograd( the soviet people despised Stalin and changed the name to Voldograd as soon as they could).

I thought that the Longgest Day was a pretty good flick, but my earlier comment about its presentation of Omaha beach still stands. Of course that's partially becuase it was made in 1962, an era when many were denied the true scope of what happened during the war and plus the weapons don't even sound right. (I know, I have too muchfree time on my hands.)

Lord_Andres
You can see the bones from the dead soldiers? DISGUSTING! and the city is called Volgograd, named after the river that runs there big grin yes I also hate it when guns sound like crap, thats one thing I acturly dont like about them old westerns, love Open range, it has SUPERB sounds of guns

Lord_Andres
I loved 'A Bridge Too Far' though, it has the best cast ever assembled to a movie, check out these names

Sean Connery
Lawerence Olivier
Antony Hopkins
Gene Hackman
Michael Caine
Robert Redford
Dirk Bogarde
James Caan
Edward Fox
Ryan O'neal
Liv Ullmann
Maximilian Schell
Hardy Kruger
Elliott Gould

Now thats a super super cast if you ask me, or anyone for that matter!

Tptmanno1
I was reading through the list, and realize no-one here mentioned Killing Fields.
That was a great war movie. Even though it wasn't a front-lines story, it still was a Vietnam movie simply because of what it was representing.
I don't think that a war movie has to have front-line fighting simply to be a war movie. It could be about how the war affected people or different aspects of the war. And sometimes those stories are even better than a front-line movie.

general-pain
I think that Schindler's List could count as a War movie. It really standsout cause it was the first R- rated movie I saw. I thought the scene with the girl in the red dress and everything around her was in black and white was absoloutly stunning.

jaden101
no it wasn't...it was set in cambodia during the ethnic cleansing by the khmer rouge

Dude what makes you think Tom Hanks is stupid?

I am just going by war movies of the last 25 years:

Platoon. It is such a great drama, realistic, and really gives you a taste of what it is like to be a soldier in Vietnam. I remember after the first time I watched it with a couple of friends, we were speechless after the movie.

If they did that, then I think it would cover Moscow Counter Offensive, the battle of Stalingrad, and Kursk.

I am just going by war movies of the last 25 years:

Platoon. It is such a great drama, realistic, and really gives you a taste of what it is like to be a soldier in Vietnam. I remember after the first time I watched it with a couple of friends, we were speechless after the movie.
I was pretty suprised to see how many people like Platoon that much. I reckon it was alright, but I didn't like it that much, and I thought most people would think the same or either wouldn't know it, but wow. (Same with Black Hawk Down).

The only thing I liked about it was the drama.

What are you talking about? Windtalkers is a classic war movie. It has everything a war movie is suppose to have and some moments in the movie were remarkable.

Platoon, hands down. The most realistic depiction of the Vietnam war ever in a film.

I also love Full Metal Jacket with a passion, but platoon is the better film.

What he said....

Mandorallen
oh ya, the deer hunter and glory were also great.
