No, you don't need to be logged into the forums...all you have to do is save the image with the same name as the original file and upload it via FTP. Pretty simple, really.

And nope, you wouldn't need to change coding to upload stuff with FTP, just rename files. Trust me, I've been doing website design for nearly 5 years. You also wouldn't need to take the board offline to just change a background image and logo.
