As I sit working on the computer I have CNN on behind me for a little background noise.
As they started to talk about the pending British election I turned around and to watch. The gist of the whole piece was that many british citizens are unhappy with Blair and are threatening legal action against him if the Iraq war is deamed "unlawful". The report went on about whether the british people would re-ellect a leader who they feel so blatantly lied to them.
And then came the kicker, the reporter then said, "But americans are no stranger to voting for a president who has lied to them"... now wait for it..."it wasn't to long ago that Bill Clinton lied to the american people, but that was not about a war and not as serious as Blair's mistakes". (Although I used quotes it's not the exact wording, but you get the point).
The thing that totally killed me is that they ignored all the Bullshit that Bush has fed his countrymen about the Iraq war (while condemning Blair) and went after Bill for lying about his personal life.
It was fricken' brilliant I tell ya!

This board's not the media

media refers to any official news source -- newspapers, magazines, TV.....

Actually the internet is a type of media its not the media of course but well....actually I was trying to make a joke......but to quote the smiths ..."This joke isn't funny anymore"...and never was..well...I guess I will just go sit in a corner then

apparently bill clinton getting a blowjob impacted the world and america far more than a war bush started which was based on lies and led to the deaths of countless thousands of iraqis and over 1500 american casualties.
Bardock42
Well in a way ...this blowjob might actually have caused this war in the end.

Bill get's blown by an intern and lies about it and it's the end of the world.
Bush actually f*cks america and then lies about it and it's overlooked.
Wierd.

Bill Clinton releasing precious fluid onto an innocent woman is apparantly worse than Bush killing innocent people to STEAL precious fluid.

Well you have to admit that Bill did something terrible, i mean he wasted some of gods precious fluids. And did something that the church condems.

God i can't even ****ing say it, Bush is an idiot. Bill was just human and should have destroyed the security tape...
Bias liberal media indeed, how the hell is it that people still talk about that one little thing... One thing that didn't do anything against the American people and completly forget about something far more important...

Republicans have a hard time understanding that what goes on between a man and a woman inside their marriage is no one else's buisness.

My dad said that he was flipping through news channels when the story of the "runaway bride" was new, and CNN had a bunch of women blaming the pressures of marriage, stress, etc. while FOX had women on who were saying that she should be tried.
Does that make you feel better?

Bill Clinton lied under oath and then somehow didn't get any legal action taken against him. Anybody else does it they have the book thrown at them.
Bush has been known to be full of BS as well so don't say i am siding with him either.

I agree with you. I just thought of all the lies and deception to use as an example of a leader lying to the American people, Clinton was a fairly lightweight example. Especially since recent evidence has been brought to light re: Iraq.

Yeah well it sounds like thats what they meant at first, and then they saved themselves at the last minute with the Clinton remark.

Rather than wait for people to call Bush on his behavior I'd rather they do it while it can make a difference.
I was never a huge fan of how Clinton conducted himself, but I do think he did a better job as president.
I also find it amusing that while Clinton was in office people were going after him because of the Lewinski issue, whitewater, Paula Jones and Jennifer Flowers. People were always after Clinton. Yet no one is attempting to take on Bush with his many questionable decisions and actions.

I'm sure if they found him in bed with Cheney the media would be in an uproar.
manny321
The fact is if the media wants, they can make bush extremely unpopular and make his whole country go against him. the media never ever attacks the president. At least foreign networks like the CBC and BBC and even local Channels around here in Toronto, take some good swings at bush.

Once again I have to say that I think during his reign, Clinton was hounded and investigated by the media for many different reasons.

Well either way sounds plausibleto me.
Anyways kaidaboo I guess you will be a lot happier in ...let's say the Off-topic forum...where people talk aboot....well pretty much nothing of any importance....this thread is a discussion aboot the strength of the media and politics in the US if you don't like it....well then go away.
To get back on topic. It seems to me that most of your (America's) bigger News Channels seem to be biased in one way or another even though I believe the more powerful ones are conservative......for some reason this is totally different here in Germany....of course you can sometimes see which station is more conservative and which is more social - democratic but overall they give everyone a fair chance...and bring the news mostly unbiased.
Fishy
You know its funny, there was a discussion going on that argued with what JM would believe, she makes one post and suddenly the discussion is gone.
She's not as stupid as most of you think, she's probably really brilliant doing all this stuff just to annoy all of you...
Anyways, its probably harder to do in Germany, as you have more then two party's that matter. Its a lot harder for the media to pick sides when there are a lot more sides to choose from. They could still do it, but its going to be hard. They can pick on one party, but its hard to destroy one and glorify another when there are several channels all with different favorites. If you had a two party system it would probably be the same as in the US

Well thats true ...... but really a two party system is quite stupis anyways. Well mayb e all people in your country either think what the democrats do is right or what the conservatives do, then your system would be just great....but I don't belive that all 300 000 000 people in your country have only two different opinions...you can always just vote for the lesser evil since o totally agree with one of the parties seems to be rather impossible....
And for your media, regardless of a two party system, they sjhould go back to what they were intended to be a non biased source of truth.....as someone said before the media was always powerful but at least they were fair in earlier times.
Fishy
I live in the Netherlands we have more then two party's and less then 300.000.000 people, anyways the media should indeed go back to being a none bias organisation. Not that it would work though.
Your from Germany so lets just take an example from that country, most people in Germany agree Hitler was an idiot right? How would you feel if the media all the media would suddenly start defending his points because in his eyes they were right. The Media is bias they always have been, either bias to the idea's of the country they are stationed in. Or biased towards the one that gives them most money. An trully unbiased Media would not be accepted by most people, so it has to be biased.
If your biased anyways then why not make some money out of it?

I'm afraid that is going to require a little more explaination.
Bardock42
Sorry I was relating to the US of course
Of course they were not unbiased.....I meant to say that they were fair in earlier times (leave thinks like Hitler and other propaganda out of course).
What you said aboot a media that tries to defend Hitlers policies would firast of all be totally biased...none the less you can have different view points on what hitler has done...and because there afre slightly biased Medias you have a chance to get fair coverage of most things....if there is a monopoly of same way biased media though (Like it seems to be in the US) you won't get fair coverage of both sides.
Fishy
Of course you won't get fair coverage, but the fact remains that Hitler (although almost everybody would thank god disagree with him) still made points that people agreed with.
An unbiased media would talk about the advantages and disadvantages of such a policy right now that couldn't happen because of several reasons. And I really can't blame Germany for not showing things like that, or any other country for that matter. a more unbiased media however i agree would be a good thing. Accepting what is socially accepted but not following one political party.
finti
ohh so CNN has stopped broadcasting form the Vatican now and actually handle other events in the world???
manny321
CNN is only good when there are big events around the world. Like 9/11 and the tsunami. I watched the Canadian channels during the Iraq war, because the American channels were so biased but funny. Guys, remember the Iraqi information minister. He said we killed all of them at the airport while they showed video of US soldiers sitting at the airport. Many Canadian channels showed a less biased story.

If ignorance is bliss, you must be the happiest person on the planet.
As for the major news stations, I just think that things have changed alot in the last few years, it seems that since 9/11 they are very hesitant to question anything that the president does, and even less likely to challenge him, seek any reasoning behind his action or hold him responsible.
All Bush has to do is say things like,"Protect America from terrorism" or "enemies of freedom" and everyone (i.e. the media) just nods their heads and agrees.

I don't know if people realize this but using the

The thing about CNN I remember the most from last year was when they were doing the hurricane coverage. It was, I think, Hurricane Jeane, which was the fourth major one of the season at that point, and the meteorologist started snapping at the anchorperson because their "slide show" wasn't working properly.
It was probably their third straight day of coverage and the meterologist was at the end of her straw and definately came across as someone I would have no desire to work with. It was humorous, though.

The only news I do trust is the BBC, but then I don't trust them very much either...
Ushgarak
This really isn't very difficult to sort out. The conceot that Bush lied is nowhere near as entrenched in the US as the idea Balir lied is in the UK, hence the parralel is now drawn.
Not that that makes the UK any more sensible, as it is only, basically, the desire to think Blair lied that makes people think he did- and that certainly was from a media campaign.
