come on guys we need to talk more on this kick ass book, FIRST AGE!!! Melkor!! bloody TULKAS
who has actually read it, I have read it a few times and may read it come this time next year - who knows *shrugs*
favourite chapter has to be "of Thengol and Melian"
Melian has to be my favourite female character of that age, great mair and received vast amounts of respect.
Turin has to be the greatest story of that age to be honest, his tragic story is probably the best I have ever read.

i've read it.. it's awesome

The Silmarillion depressed me the way memories sometimes do when they conjure up people and places lost in time. But even so, this so-called depression was bittersweet, and not unsatisfying.
I would attribute it not the occurences in the plot, although there are a few real "downers" naturally, but to the tone of the work: elegaic, mournful. The Silmarillion is a history and a myth that you become emotionally involved with in spite of the distance placed between you and the characters. It's uncanny, really.
It's both depressing and hopeful, that's for sure, but in such a powerful way that it left me shaking after the first time I read it.

^^ I like you're long-winded explinations Shad

its been a while

Discus? me
lay off Turin, his sword was pretty sweet and his friend (which he ended up killing) was a bit.....oops!
Wish there was more of the silmarillion but thats what HoME are for. I still aint got round to reading them babies.
shadowy is such a ***** when it comes to this topic

the only really depressing part of the silmarillion was reading about elves (who are immortal) being slaves for eternity.....ouch.
Mandos
He has fallen in the dark side of the Force.

Hund (think thats how you spell the little chaps name) is a nice crazy character doggy thing

He didn't know! It was an accident. He just had a little confusion about the kind of love he was experiencing...
Thorondor
No excuse he should have known the weirdo.

Who the Hell are you to be so judgemental about such things!

shadowy_blue
Thor: It's obvious that you're deliberately straw-grasping. I know you've read the book and you should know better than that. I know you do. You know what really happened. You don't just have to say those things just for the sake of proving that Turin is a hateable guy.
This thread is getting kinda ridiculous. I don't think any explanations would be of any use.

I figured that much, that's why I just asked you upfront and cleared it as it is than wasting all the time that I have typing up a long explanation that would eventually end up in vain.
It's cool and all that you don't like Turin. Lots of people doesn't, and I'm glad you cleared up your position.

Thorondor
You ruined a quite possibly good arguement there

shadowy_blue
Between who?
I wouldn't have bought it.

Thorondor
which is why it would have been you argueing with meh

shadowy_blue
I wouldn't win.
There's no victory against a pointless argument.

shadowy_blue
OK...to get to my point...Turin, despite being hated by Morgoth, cursed by Morgoth, working entirely against fate, generally disliked by many, somewhat prideful, and all that... he still managed to spend the vast majority of his time doing what he thought was right and kicking some serious butt doing it. And even when he was living with a band of outlaws and not being so nice, he became a member because in one smooth motion, he killed the "best" of the group. He's by default the best of them, and fated to be... *s-b trails off, knowing that everybody by now gets her point*.

Mandos
Faith is joining the Dark Side of the Force.
shadowy_blue
Mandos: She said fate, not "faith".
And the Dark Side of the Force thing is getting redundant, don't you think?

Elessea
^ ^

stop with the offtopic "force" crap...it is starting to be bothersome...

Should have known? Like you can instantly know who your sister is, having NEVER known her your entire life.
It wasn't Turin's fault...not at all....

Right when I thought we had a decent LOTR related thread in the LOTR forum.....something like THIS comes along...

^LOL...pip...I was trying to be subtle when I pointed it out to him.

Elessea

Bar-en-Danwedh
Turin Rocks !!!!
he was a totally misunderstood phsycho...
no where near as mad and unpredictable as Feanor (who also rocks).
he made a few bad choices, some really bad shit happened to him... he didn't have gandalf telling him which way was up or any long lasting allies... (and beleg was an accident), but he defeated the nastiest bad guy in the whole damn book...
