Funny because that's what people said right before the release date of The Phantom Menance and Attack Of The Clones, but neither one came close to Titanic. In fact, AOTC took LESS money than TPM.
I think that Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith will do better than the last two because critics are saying it is the best Star Wars movie of all time. It is also the most anticipated Star Wars movie of all time because this is the movie everyone has been waiting for. This movie should do well, but I do not know about better than Titanic or not.
Ben-Kenobi
I dont know , this one needs intense meditateing, its possible if ROTS is a good movie which i know its gonna be so yeah its possible it could take craptanic.
Batman316
doubt it.
Titanic appealed to a lot larger audience
Ben-Kenobi
I know i hate that damn boat, pardon my language.

Titanic will go down. I feel it in the Force. The Dark Side is strong with Revenge of the Sith.

Those numbers aren't adjusted for inflation. And I'm still sticking with my intitial prediction of $350,000,000 domestically; $800,000,000 worldwide for ROTS.
PVS
its possible.
especially since hayden will be very popular among the tweeny-teeny boppers. they are the ones who made titanic the monster it was (a mindless piece of garbage monster anyway)
its all about hooking them. they are the ones who will see it over and over by the tens of millions and bring their little boyfriends to go see it....BIG difference is, they had to drag their boys to see titanic, but in this case there will be no dragging. if i am correct, the box office gross will reach an untouchable and downright legendary #1.
umraan
i dont think so. people might be like god damn another star wars movie!!! or some people will be like oooo its the last lets go see it!!!

I hope so But that would take a huge miracle. I hate that damn boat as well.

Wow The Best Star Wars movie ESB didnt make the cut. If that one did'nt (because its the darkest one of the OT I think), I doubt ROTS will.
ickeris2003
titanic is a very boring old movie. someone should take its place. hopefully rots will but I doubt it. maybe some other movie will
DaRtH_mCnAztY
i hated titanic and was pissed when it took #1 back in 97, some day though, someday soon, its palce will be taken, we all wait apon its arrival and marvil,

I dunno about beating Titanic but hopefully it will be in the top 5.

I am sure it will get top 5

I wouldn't bet on it. Many disheartened fans have strayed away, and many outsiders look at it as silly, and not worth the time.

exactly, i think the movie will be good enough that the real hard core fans will go several times.
Also this is the last star wars, and its peoples last chance to see this on the big screen, and they know this.
Also words getting around this movie will satisfy the people that didn't like I and II.
Its gonna be a massive block buster. Will it take on the behemoth known as Titanic? Clouded the future is

When that stupid boat goes down into the water in that god for saken stupid film, it should play an evil rendition of the imperial march! HA HA HA!
sorry if i come across as being a bit evil but i really detest that film, i think i could say its one of the worst / cheesy / poorly edited / hurendous acting ive ever seen
P.S STAR WARS EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH MAY 19th!!!!!
COME ON!!!!!!
MythBlazer
I would love for ROTS to beat the "damn boat" but think about it; Titanic stayed in the #1 spot for 11 weeks, there is no way ROTS can do that because unlike when Titanic was released today we have blockbuster movies almost every two weeks. The audience will split because not everyone can watch every movie out.

I hope it happens, but I really doubt it.
I don't understand why Titanic was such a popular movie. I saw part of it on TV, got bored, and switched channels. It so did not deserve the #1 spot.
Texansfan05
That's what happens when Girls see a film 20 times
star22
Ug. Makes me almost feel bad for being a girl. Why do people watch junk like that?
Texansfan05
When I watched Titanic this happened

star22
Yup. Thankfully, for me it was on TV and I could just changed the channel. My sister actually liked the movie. Ug. She has no taste.
moviejunkie23
i didn't think Titanic was THAT bad, but certainly not good enough to have the biggest blockbuster.
I hope sith kicks its butt
ChristianRocker
I hope so and believe so, but it being PG-13 could make it better for older people sayin hey this actually might be pretty good, but parents might not let their kid see it so it could go either way.

I would really like to see beat Titanic, but I really think it is going to be hard since this is the summer and there are other movies coming out too.
Darth Mantis
Of all the movies... Why did titanic get a hell lot of money...
mephistodesigns
Don't underestimate the dark side of 13 year old girls and their "Leo" crushes....
What bugs me most about that movie, is that it SOOOO should have been rated R and the ratings board "overlooked" a lot to keep it PG-13 because Cameron lobbied for its "historical significance". BS, nudity, sex, extreme disater oriented violence? should have been R.
not that it matters now, but its always made me wonder how it got by on that, and a lot tamer films have been R.
truheretic
Star wars should beat titanic any day but the fact is people who dont even like romance films liked titanic and star was is god only to us fan.
This film will def. own but its never getting close to titianic especially since its like the middle of the saga which means if they didnt see 1 or 4 they arent coming for 3

I agree with Titanic being a chick flick but personally I love the star wars movies MUCH better than I did Titanic. It would be great and I would LOVE to see it "sink" the Titanic.
Altar[1stONE]
titanic in space, yes lets sink the boat and blow it up with a star destroyer.

This would be 10 times more exciting and less dragged-out than Titanic, too. Hayden Christensen is the new Leonardo DiCaprio for the chicks.

Wizard of Oz? Don't think so. I don't think it even rates, inflation adjusted- IMDB has it making 15 million dollars compared to Gone with the Wind's 200 million, and they were released in the same year. Working on the same rate of inflation adjustment (never a precise business, though) that would only be about 100 million in today's prices- not close.
Gone with the Wind is first and Star Wars second.
http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm
Of course, such a list is US only because international release is really only an eighties onwards phenonemon.
Bur anyway... no, this film will not come close to beating Titanic- sorry! Internationally, if it even gets halfway, as Phantom Menace did, that would be an impressive achiement.
lau_timmy
ROTS is the most likeley contender to knock out Titanic since "The Return of THe King" wich grossed more than a billion world wide, "The Phantom Menace" did close to a billion and if this film becomes the highest grossing star wars film of all time then it just might be the third movie ever to make a billion, and have a chance of knocking titanic out.

$158.4 million so far.

If it gets close, say $550 million, it has a chance. Remember, all six movies will be re-released in a few years.

Given how much ticket prices have gone up just since Titanic, $6 evening versus $9 evening, I don't see how it can't beat it. I think with the way ticket prices keep going up and how the number of theatres keeps growing, that to compare movies separated by 10 years or more based on box office rake-in is a bunch of bull because you really can't compare the two. Not that I'm saying Titanic deserves the #1 spot because it SOOO doesn't. But when one film sells for $6 or less per ticket on 2000 screens and then another sells for $9 per ticket on 3500 screens, how can you make a valid comparison?
Echuu
Good point; you would have to go by the exact number of tickets sold; not how much the films make.
Regardless, Titanic must be destroyed by Sith. It is our only hope...
vader519
The only thing that will stop ROTS from beating Titanic is that if more peole keep downloading the movie.

Now ep IV, on the other hand...should GL decide to RE-re-release that one again...it may inch towards Titanic. I think a lot of people would like to watch ep IV on the big screen after seeing ROTS.

ROTS has no chance of beating Titanic, domestic or worldwide. I really loved the movie, and will probably end up seeing it 3 times, but I don't think it has the legs to beat Titanic.
Titanic made 600 million domestic, 1.8 billion overall (domestic & worldwide combined)
Right now ROTS is at around 275 million domestic. I just don't see it doing another 300+ million, though I think it can get between 400-450 million.
The phenomenon of Titanic had every single demographic seeing it. Many Baby Boomers because it was a historical subject. Guys could enjoy it as a date movie, and girls saw it endlessly for Leo. Unfortunately Star Wars audience is just a majority of guys seeing it endlessly.

Titanic is a horrible film.
I just thought I'd mention that.

yeah they should have had sharks in it...or better yet a sith lord sinking the ship! should make a picture for that...lol...Palps floating in the back ground using the force to sink the ship....then Leo whips out a lightsbaber...lol....I would enjoy the movie more then...lol

Well we need everyone to start seeing the movie becuase the boxoffcie is starting to slow down. It should pass $300 million this week, and many people say that ROTS reaching $400 million is a stretch right now.
Lazerlike42
The problem is honestly, without any attempt at humor or mockery, that Star Wars does not have ever 12 year old girl in the country seeing it 5 times because Hayden Christiansen is the flavor of the week.
