Well, as I have mentioned in other threads, I am playing in a band my friends and I started. We have gotten to the point were we are trying to write some songs, but we are having trouble putting together any decent ones. We have only completed one song, and it was kind of a joke song anyways. So I was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints or advice on how to write some good rock music

No matter how bad a song is, it's still a base to start from. I have shit I wrote 3-4 years ago that sucked ass but over time you can make adjustments. Personally, I like to write that way. Start off basic, move on to something else, go back and make adjustments, keep bouncing back and forth. It pays to hear new stuff with fresh ears.

well, when actualy writing lyrics don't always belive everything has to ryhme.
I hate it when I hear a new song and can figure out the lyrics before i hear them!

Don't force it, it doesn't work that way.
You could be on the bus and have an idea for something.

what works for me is have a pen and paper at tha side of my bead and write right before i fall a sleep.

I think 99.9% of bands write the lyrics last, so remove that from the equation.
Essentially you are looking to create something you yourself would like to listen to, which only comes with practice, trial and error, experience, and so forth.
Alpha Centauri
Precisely.
Don't write music because you think someone will like it. Make music to please yourself.

K-kind of a development of what he (I) said.

Would be funny if you drown one day.

I am in the band and can come up with tons of cool stuff (in terms of actual music on the guitar) but lyrics are much harder to come up with. I also heard that people should come up with lyrics before they write the music...
StinkFist462
thats so hard to do though. for me and this one band i used to be in it was Drums , Bass , Guitat , Vocals .. in that order

we havent gotten to practice with our drummer yet, but maybe we will try it in that order. thx for the idea

Writing lyrics is hard at first, but it's like writing music--don't force it and you'll get ideas. Just be thinking about it in the back of your head as you go through the day and if an idea pops into your head, write it down, no matter how stupid you think it may be. The more ideas, the easier it will be to actually write something later. You'll get better at it as you've done more of it.

Some of my first lyrics were/are horrid.
As time has gone on I've discovered what works, what doesn't work, what I like to include or write about and what I don't.
Still have alot of learning to do.

Just a quick question for everyone- Is it easier to have the entire band help write the song, or for just one person to do it alone?
StinkFist462
if you want to write them all yourself then go for it , if you need help then have your band help you .. but first run it by everyone if your writing everything by yourself cause if you dont thats just an ass move.

If you're the singer, it only makes sense to write the lyrics, if you're the bassist, you write the bass part, etc... But getting input on anything from your bandmates doesn't hurt either.
