I bet most of people here haven't even heard of Dark Materials so here's to simplify it... Northern lights, Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. They're the three books. I loved the books soooo much, but I'm still reading number 3 and I'm just wondering what you people think about it becoming a movie? If you haven't heard of it don't bother writing here... OK? I think the Witches flying over Lyra in the first one when she's on Ioryk Byrinson's back and looking up into the sky where the witches were and I think the balloon would be cool... everything would be awesome!

One of the books is already in pre production. Northern Lights/Golden Compass.

Yeah, hopefully it will be atleast half as good as the books are.

This movie is coming out at the end of next year. yeah, at the very end of december 2006 or something. New line is making it.It's expected to be as good as LOTR and narnia will be but I think it will only live up to the expectations of the harry potter movies(the first was great but I was dissapointed of 2 & 3).

The protagonist is 10 or so though. That would be difficult to cast. The theatrical production cast a 21 year old to play her.
I'd say that The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass are not good enough to film as well as not being easily transferred to that medium.

Actually, since they lost the director to screenplay writing, the movie may not come out until after 2006. Depending on when they start holding auditions for the movie. Oh and they Do Not have a director as far as I know. I've researched and there is no one set on being the director. They only have the Production Company, Producer, and Screenplay writer.

When creating a series of books into movies the 1st one is always awesome then the last ones always seem to not live up to their potentail. An example is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Also how can a 21 year old to play 10? The wonders of movie production never cease to amaze.

His Dark Materials is an awesome book series. I'd love if they could make a movie of the books, especially if they accurately portray the characters and not do something stupid, such as make Lyra worse at lying than she actually is.
About the HP movies, I think the second one was pretty good, but the third and fourth were terrible; the third one had good reason (a new director), but the fourth one just left out too much information and the non-readers didn't understand most of what happened, such as the reason for Voldemort's and Harry's wands linking (each had a feather from Fawkes inside it).

That is the thing the books had a lot of adult things in it. It is not a kids book like HP and to tone it down for kids, I think would be wrong. I wounder what they will do about all the realigas things it calls into question, because in the U.S. people go nuts over that sort of thing. To try and tone that down would also be wrong. The thing about HP is that it has WAY more stuff to try and fit then the DM books. I am not to worried about them and the movie story.

yea, I hate the HP movies, they just didnt get anything right. They left out vital info i the fourth and thats just dumb. LOTR was like 4 hours in the extended version, couldnt they do that? I love His Dark Materials, its awesome. When I heard that they were gonna make a movie of it, I kinda had mixed feelings, cause they almost never get the movie as true to the book as anyone wants.
