Darth Travizzle
Dudes why do you have to be a kid to join the Academy? I think it's stupid.

The idea was that training had to begin at a very young age, before the children had been exposed to negative emotions. Older kids (like Anakin in Ep 1) had had too much exposure to fear, anger etc, so training them would lead to the Dark Side.
Darth Macabre
They begin training at a young age so they don't become attached to there families/friends/the milk man. Most Jedi don't even know their families.
Ushgarak
Yup, attachment is the big no-no.
Darth Travizzle
Then I couldn't be a Jedi, I've got a girlfriend.
chilled monkey
Not necessarily. If you count the novels and such, Luke tossed out the 'no attachments' rule when he re-built the Jedi (yes, I know that's EU).

not only Luke, Ki-Adi Mundi had multiple ones too I believe

b-dan
they have to cuz i think at an older age if you join you will go to the dark side and children are pure that probly why they pick them at a really young age Anie is a perfect example

Yep, Mundi had a wife and child. So much for 'no attachments'.

Well, lucky you...

Ushgarak
Not on-screen he didn't. The rule is clear- NO attachments, and marriage is forbidden!

Then nevermind, I might make a good Jedi. If they existed.

So Anakin had to hide his marrige, but did Ki-Adi Mundi?
chilled monkey
Nope. He talked about his daughter in front of Yoda.
Ushgarak
Like I say, nevermind all of that. GL has made it clear that attachment is lethal for a Jedi. Therefore, by GL's world logic, any future where Luke 'tosses out' the no attachment rule would be one where the whole Order is going to go down the pan.
Fact is, the EU is massively out of step with continuity there.

I have a feeling the author started this thread with the only intent being that he could tell everyone he had a GF....Well horray for you my friend, horray for you!
