I'm partial to many jazz musicians myself. Mingus is probably my favorite. I really dig Archie Shepp too, and these days I've been listening to some old Pharoah Sanders albums.

Archie Shepp is very underrated

I saw Archie Shepp once with Richard Davis and Sunny Murray. That was a great show. The man can sing the blues too. I like people who can use edgy, out playing to support an overall vision or statement, not just for the sake of making noise. No matter how far out Trane got it was for a vision...
