BAIL ORGANA: "It could be a trap."

OBI-WAN: "No, I don't think so. The Chancellor will not be able to control the thousands of star systems without keeping the Senate intact."

Hmm so my question is, controlling the thousands of star systems needed the senate..but in Episode IV,A New Hope, the Galactic Empire truly transformed into a dictatorship when the Emperor dissolved the Imperial Senate. So how then did he control the galaxy?Surely not by the Stormtroopers solely?

PALPATINE: "In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society."

PADME: "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause . . . "

Surely the Republic did not turned into dictatorship ovenight? But how exactly was the senate corrupt? How did Palpatine ensure that?Surely they believed there was something that they thought they would gain? What was that? Why were the senators so in support of Palpatine? And at which point did he became the Emperor (like napoleon)..it was not exactly shown in the movie eh.

I know many senators who did not like the Empire became the Rebel Alliance. But it still intrigues me on how a Democracy could turn to Dictatorship drastically.

Democracy is embodied by balance of shared power, while dictatorship is absolute (like the Sith). So the Democracy is dying when it became too consumed by one leader. The Jedi realised this, and attempted to open up a new option of political leadership, themselves. In a way they were guarding Democracy all the time, even with their involvement in the war.So i see that is why they needed to be removed by the Emperor. The Jedi were a threat to the Dictatorship (Empire and the Sith).

Anyway i really would like to know the answers to the questions above.. smile

Deathstar, Vader, entire Empire. Oh and regional governors called Moffs.

Also; notice how Palps says that it WILL be reorganized. 20 year time gap between PT and OT so it obviously doesn't happen immediately. At the beginning of ANH they have just gotten rid of the Imperial Senate.

yah i overlooked the death star, the technological terror..dictatorships instill fear as a form of control..

But remember those ppl in the battle station discussing bout the power of the new Death star:

"...this station is now the ultimate power in the universe!"

VADER: "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

"Don't try to frighten us with your sorceress's ways Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to the ancient religion does not help u conjure up the stolen datatapes..or given u clairvoyance enuff to find the rebels hidden fortress. (choked by Vader using the Force)"

VADER: "I find your lack of Faith disturbing"

So vader does not really admire the 'technological terror' cause he believes the Force is the greatest power. Why didn't he use Sith powers to intimidate..i mean he seems to undermine the Empire's use of control..

Does not that make the Galactic Empire a secular one..but led by sith lords..Sith dictatorship would be an interesting thing to discuss..since there are only two of them..it would take just removing the two to restore thousands of jedi?! Does not that mean the Sith is indeed stronger...

well this thread was answerd quickly...lol

All empires have only one ruler. The rest is done by the legions. Doesn't this look like Roman Empire, Egypt, or the nazi germany? It's quite simple and obvious. One leader and a vast army. Military power.

Individually, Sith are far more powerful on average. Think of Maul (who was relatively young) who defeated experienced master Jedi QuGon.

Their power stems from hatred and aggression, two emotional states which Jedi are forbidden to tread.

Yupz i do know that..i'm a history student in advance levels..that's why i would prefer to see exactly how the Democracy turned to Dictatorship..theoretically and ideologically..how it affected all walks of life..and how they contributed to the transition as a whole.

Hmm yah so i hope it would be shown in much detail in the TV series, the time frame the 20 yrs between the PT and the OT..Should be interestin to see eh..

Yup, it's that simple. Tarkin directly states that the Senate is not needed because the Death Star gives the fear needed for the Regional Governors to rule directly.

That the Death Star is then destroyed pretty much begins the slide that eventually finishes the Empire.
