What caused ROTJ to be such a lighter movie compared to ESB? I remember reading somewhere tha ta director or somesuch left the SW project after ESB, can anyone confirm that?

Empire was directed by Irvin Kershner. George wanted Speilberg to direct Jedi but he was a DGA member so he couldn't hire him and instead got welsh director Richard Marquand.
