Well, like I said, they all sound the same, so the cover art is the real lure.

But, Morbid Fecal Carnage sounds like no other death metal band, AND we have a cool cover.

i remember once i was listening to it on the bus through my disc man, and i started to sing the lyrics out loud with out knowing

i got so many dirty looks

never understood the love of death metal. i can understand that at some level the musicians can have a real degree of talent, generally only the drummer though, but as a main line, its just undesypherable screaming and guitars that are incredibly fast but also amazingly sloppy.
and like C-Dic said, its no longer about making good music, its about who can be the most shocking, and i think that even Cannibal Corpse have fallen into the pit of trying way to hard to be shocking.

I dunno if Nile would class as Death Metal.

But they're awesome. They're not horrifically cliched, talking about gore and all that stuff though.

They're not death metal at all really. Granted they have lots of death metal elements, but they definitely don't follow any of the death metal cliches, apart from the fact that they are Scandinavian and have extraodinarily long hair. They're way too romantic, sensitive and poetic to be death metal.

easily, like this: "the singing and guitar work is sloppy." there's a big difference between having highly technical guitar sounds and good vocals and bashing your guitar and sliding up and down the neck and screaming indecipherable lyrics

To be fair Morbid, there isn't anything there insulting the bands as such, he's commenting on how absolutely stupid the covers are. Lots of 'death metal' is just screaming and ridiculously fast guitar riffs. I prefer a bit of melody, like I think most people would.

Let me ask you something... Have YOU ever seriously listened to death metal? Quite a lot of it is complete crap. And I believe C-dic did say later on that he doesn't like the music, either. Though I wouldn't even class some of it as music.

I don't like death metal. It's just to hard and a lot of screaming.

But the singer from In Flames for example... He writes great lyrics, but you can't understand 90% of them. Very sad...

I for one don't really care what a band look like, if they make music I like, then that's that. Half of those bands you listed are bad, but like Mister Revan said, CoF, Megadeth and Anthrax aren't death metal, and don't sound like death metal in the slightest.

And please tell me you were joking with At The Gates. They're legends. They pretty much perfected the wonderful melodic metal of Dark Tranquility and In Flames, and like those two (great) bands, they are talented, and do not conform to the usual death metal cliches. Apart from the photo pose, but until image becomes an important factor in musical quality, that's neither here nor there.

I'm always impressed at vocalists who are capable of making some form of coherency as well as staying in tune with the music, in congruity with reaching their full capacity for aggression. But that's me and with the inner circle of musicians that I have been lucky enough to be enlightened with.
