In The Revenge of the Sith, when Yoda enters Palpatine's office, he hits the guards with the force, then exchanges words with Sidious. All of a sudden, with what's apparent to me as an obvious preparation for attack, Sidious stretches out his gnarled fingers and releases a wave of force lightning, which somehow catches Yoda off guard, and a look of complete surprise washes over his face right before he is hit. Yoda's all wise, his force-lightning-deflection skills rock, so, WTF?!!!

Answer - dramatic effect, and showing that Sidious is powerful. Even Jedi masters can be caught "napping".

The Darkside of the Force was clouding his judgement.

Yeah, I've made this argument before, dude. Yoda-fans have tendancies to ignore that their all powerful lil' Yoda can make mistakes. I don't know. Can't say he was caught off guard. I guess Palpatine's attack just overpowered him.

I'd say he was caught off guard. Dark-Side can cloud a Jedi's 'future sense' after all.

He did get his hands up to block it put he simply underestimated the powers of the emperor.

dude, watch it again. yoda is hit square in the chest.

he was looking right at palpatine as he raised his hands and basically warned him of the attack. the darkside clouds one's intuition, but yoda's eyes and ears work just fine. and from his experience with dooku, i think its a no-brainer for him that when a sith raises his hands at you...BLOCK.

i know. it's because yoda was so shocked and surprised that he would be doing this so he wasn't thinking

Well I'll put it down to what Yoda says in ROTJ. To Luke "Do not underestimate the power of the Emperor or suffer your fathers fate you will"
My take is that Yoda thought he could kick palps ass easily but at the last moment realised that this force lightning was way more powerful than what Dooku could throw at him.

I think the point of that scene was to show the viewer that Sidious was equal to if not more powerful than Yoda. I think it also showed Yoda that Sidious was stronger than he thought.

It has nothing to do with Palps power, or Yoda's mistake. It is simply just a poorly made scene. I'm sure GL wanted it to appear that the fight was back and forth, with both guys getting good shots in and have the duel appear to be an even draw. I think he did a pretty good job of that other then the opening lightning scene.

Oh well, bad choice there by the movie makers. It makes Yoda seem like a pussy. I'm sure even Sith lovers will agree that the scene makes no sense considering how powerful Yoda is. I think they could have come up with a more plausable way for Yoda to take a shot from palpy.

The movie needed som "drama" in that scene, and the only way Lucas found to get it was slaping the sh!t out of Yoda. Lame

Lucas is a hack. That pretty much explains everything. He should stop directing and writing and become a visual effects supervisor. He makes stuff look pretty, but thats about it.

I don't understand how you can call him a hack when the scene disagrees with your vision.

I thought the scene said a ton, in fact, IMO, it was the most symbolic of the whole movie.

Out with the old, in with the new. A change in the balance of power. Just how far the jedi have fallen. Whatever you want to call it, Yoda got trounced.

Again, the scene and the entire battle could have been all that is needed to explain "revenge of the sith". The sith did get their revenge by kicking Yoda's tiny green behind. It was the end of the jedi, in that one scene alone. It showed the great master sucking voltage, not repelling it as he thought he may. Certainly Vader, who was pronounced limbless by Obiwan, did not get his revenge.

Brilliant. Now, I may not agree that GL is without error, but this was one of his best , most powerful scenes in the entire PT.

However, i now like to think it was a way for GL of saying "Both sides of the force are very powerful." Why you ask? Because Sids uses the lightning on Yoda (one of the most loved things by darkside wetdream fanboys), tosses him down while zapping him, then Yoda uses the force push (one of the lamest things according to darkside wetdream fanboys) and manages to toss Sids across the room and into his chair. Therefore, as i said, i consider it a way of saying both sides are very powerful.

given vikings post, i think yoda did try and block it, because he did raise his hands, but severly underestimated the power. when they did it again, yoda was prepared, but still could only hold it for a short period before the power became overwhelming.

yeah, but look at how much time he had to prepare while sids kept babbling on, he probably assumed it would be like dooku, he did crap all to block dookus lightning, against sidious he had to use both hands and still couldnt overcome it.

back in my day, when some punk kid got zapped from an evil sith lord, they fell down and took the pain up the anal passage. and they looked like they were getting zapped and in pain. look at yoda, he just gets up and acts like nothing ever happened...no pain...no stress...no smoke.....nothing.

To be fair, Luke didn't really seem to be in pain after he was electrocuted either...

yeah, but he was lying on the floor crying and smoking like a little schoolgirl being rejected trying to sell cookies to a neighbour.

He may have taken a hit, sure, but it did practically nothing. As Mist pointed out, look at how it affected Luke. Yoda on the other hand recovers from it almost instantly, then hits Sidious with an awesome psychokinetic push that sends him flying MUCH further back.

Sidious tries to run (like a scared rat) and Yoda stops him. "If so powerful are you, then why do you run?" And he doesn't answer.

I loved it when Yoda said that, but I think it was,

"If so powerful you are, why leave?"

or something like that.

Yoda got owned the first time because he underestimated Palpatine's lightning. By the time he realized it might be too much to handle, he was knocked backwards.

But during the finale of their fight when Palpatine shocked him again, you can see Yoda take it painfully and then slowly but surely deflect it back to Palpatine.

The difference between this fight and the one with Dooku was Yoda was on the offensive with Dooku but much more on the defensive with Palpatine and much more nervous it seemed. Palpatine seemed to be just toying with him, cackling and laughing, until the end when he also got knocked backwards by his lightning.

think he would be weaker. The Dooku fight Yoda knew his moves cuz he

taught him. And he just found out palps is a sith lord what are you

supposed to expected. He got ready to reflect but didn't he had to see

just how powerful Palps is so he knows if this is gonna be easy and

just use saber or both saber and force in AOTC he knew he could beat

him he knew what he was capable of. He got hit and he for lil took it

well he got up and fought back and threw palps back he act like he was

hit with a spark nothing not even a shock but man that scene should he

be called get shocked it goes perfect get shocked with lightning and be

shocked. But we know he could have killed palps but

he had to go to much going on this match losing would be no opption.

Yoda underestimated Palpatine. He paid severely for it. The lightning from Palpatine overpowered Yoda's defenses. Now, listen to me. Yoda did NOT recover from it almost instantly. You go watch the movie again. It is PALPATINE who recovers almost instantly. When Yoda Force pushes him - Palpatine goes flipping over his desk. Then boom! He gets right back up.

Yoda is nearly unconscious from Palpatine's attack. Get your facts straight.
