My favorite band is the Canadian progressive rock band RUSH. Geddy Lee, the lead singer, bassist and, sometimes, keyboard player, is the protaganist and the inspiration for the band. His soaring bass solos and searing vocals on such works as ' Red Barchetta', ' Tom Sawyer ',
' The Trees ', ' Limelight ', Manhattan Project ' , ' Big Money ' and ' Subdivisions', just to name a few songs, is awe inspiring. There are a few bass players that inspire such devotion and almost religious fanaticism to the craft as Mr. Geddy Lee.

Secondly, there is Alex Lifeson, the lead guitar and singer as well as the co - writer of the lyrics and music. Though he is an accomplished musician and writer, he is often over looked by other notable stallwarts such as Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young , et cetera.

Finally, there is Neil Peart, drummer extraordinaire and lyrical genius for the band. Much of his technical precise technique regarding his playing stems from studying such gifted musicians such as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Max Roach and Keith Moon of The Who.

Mr. Peart is also well read. His inspirations for the lyrics of many songs originate from such works by writers such as Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, and the one writer he deems a ' genius ' and writer whose works have influenced most of the band's music, such as the album '2112' from the novel ' Anthem ', Ayn Rand through her philosophy of objectivsm.

The song ' Tom Sawyer ' even has verse loosely dedicated to her ideas.

' His mind is not for rent, for neither god nor government. '
