Why does Spongebob Squarepants wear square pants, when hes quite obviously a sponge, and could prolly fit into regular pants?

I dont have square ass, Spongebob does, and seen as hes a friggin SPONGE, hes malleable enough to wear normal pants. It just doesnt make sense to waste valuable money and resources on specialist pants, that are prolly made by child labourers!!!
