ElectricBugaloo
Wu Tang Clan ahead of Tribe?

Morgoths_Wrath
that list is seriously flawed

it's a f*cking vh1 list. of course it sucks. don't be surprised.

Dr. Octagon

Queen Latifah at no.24 lol

Cinemaddiction
If only VH1 knew what Hip Hop was, because the following don't belong...

47. Arrested Development
46. Eve
45. Heavy D
44. MC Hammer
39. Ja Rule
36. Master P
32. Cypress Hill
31. Naughty By Nature
30. Will Smith / DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince
29. Nelly
28. Busta Rhymes
26. Ice Cube
25. Snoop Dogg
23. DMX
21. OutKast
16. Ice T
14. P. Diddy
13. NWA
12. Wu-Tang Clan
9. Salt N Pepa
7. Dr. Dre
6. Eminem
4. Notorious BIG
3. Tupac Shakur

I mean...Arrested Development, they had TWO POP SONGS!

Furthur evidence the general public has absolutely no idea what Hip Hop is, and what distinguishes it from rap. There is a difference, and I suggest everyone learns it. Shit..just call it what it is, VH1. "The Top 50 black artists that had some good songs we got jiggy to in college over the past 20 years or so".

Dr. Octagon
the truth^ i also wouldn't include Jay-z.

SlipknoT
How can you say NWA, Wu Tang, Tupac, Biggie, and Cypress Hill DOnt belong on it?

Dr. Octagon
i would include NWA for breaking limits, and Wu Tang for their great influence and nice albums (well some of them lol)

Dr. Octagon
i think Tribe should have been number 1.

It would be more likely Tupac would come out of my ass than Vh1 coming up with a decent Top 50 hip hop list.

It's Vh1, what do you expect?

Dr. Octagon

You don't think Wu Tang and NWA should belong? confused

Cinemaddiction
Mainstream Hip Hop died when NWA broke, and it hasn't been back since. M2 will have "Sucka Free Sundays" and all these supposed "Hip Hop" artists, but never feature BEP, Common, The Roots, Mos Def, or any other prominant Hip Hop artist.

Wu Tang Clan, while creative, are just a bunch of guys with a gimmick and non-sensical, non-directional lyrics. Hip Hop has always been about having a message, or just waxing poetic & nostalgia.

Rap will NEVER have the soul that Hip Hop does.

Dr. Octagon
i guess that is true somewhat^ the Wu do send out a message within their songs, but not consistently.

Off that list i would say Ice T, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang, Cypress Hill and Arrested Development DO deserve to be on the list. They have all had strong messages in their songs just not as consistently as PE and BDP. Ice T's "escape the killing fields", Ice Cube's "alive on arrival" are examples of this. Arrested Development were all about the message, it may have been a flower power message but that was just their style.
As for VH1's list, how are you gonna put Salt n Pepper above KRS 1? mad

Deathblow
Of course Ice Cube belongs confused If NWA belong, then Cube belongs, seeing as they made their only classic album largely thanks to his input, and then he went off and made two albums that were as good as SOC, and one which was better.

Non-directional yes, but non-sensical, very rarely. True they use a whole lot of personal slang and pretty obscure pop-culture references, but on the whole most of their lyrics make sense, no more or less than most other hip-hop artists. And they're mostly battle raps anyway, so they're not really trying to put across a message, exceptions being songs like Tearz. Anyway, to me that's what makes them so great. We need a break from the preaching. And who in hip-hop makes more sense than GZA? Or has produced as much audio-gold as RZA? Or (was) as original and entertaining as Method Man? Or as tongue-twistingly powerful as Inspectah Deck? Wu own that list, and almost any other they may be on.

Deathblow - back with a vengence. How's it goin man?
