ScarletSpider
Marc Spector was a mercenary when he decided to oppose a mission he was on because he wanted some poon. He was beaten and left for dead at the foot of a statue of Khonshu, Egyptian god of the moon/healing/vengeance. For awhile, Spector had super strenght that waxed and waned with the moon, and he battled some mystical enemies--for instance he first appeared in Werewolf by Night, hunting down Jack Russell.

Then he was set up in his own series, he more or less did away with the Marc Spector identity, except his closest friends still called him Marc. He hatched two more identities, Steven Grant, a millionaire playboy. Marc used his large finances from the mercenary game to invest and increase his funds and form Spector Corp. He used his finances as Grant to fund the Moon Knight operation. He also created Jake Lockley, an average-guy cabbie who could gather intelligence as needed to aid the Moon Knight's operations.

His super strenght came and went, more often that not, he doesn't actually possess any. It depends on the writer. Moench kept his origins and powers vague on purpose. Was it really mystical, was he really reborn and revived, or did blood loss just make him hallucinatory and he recovered on his own? A few times he's actually been stated to have super strength, he was bitten by Jack Russell but something happened so he gained strength during the night instead of becoming a werewolf. Then he lost it.

He's kind of like Batman. Only really messed up, and really gritty. He's one of the few "superheroes" that the Punisher respects, because Spector has the stones to do what needs to be done. He won't kill usually, but he'll do whatever he needs to do to win a fight and put away the bad guy. He has a new limited series coming out soon with art by David Finch, usually I'm not a big fan of his art, but for darker gritty stories his work really shines and written by novelist Charlie Huston. Check it out. http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=38948
