They're are a consulting company from San Francisco, CA that counts every time a brand is mentioned in a song in the top 20 songs. here are their results for 2004:

1) Cadillac (70 mentions)
2) Hennessy (69)
3) Mercedes (63)
4) Rolls Royce (62)
5) Gucci (49)

As for the artists themselves, here is how it goes:
1) Kanye West (19 mentions)
2) Twista (16)
3) Lil Jon (15)
4) Ludacris (10)
4) Chingy (10)

The only non-hip hop mention came from Jessica Simpson, who mentioned Levis. Considering that Kanye West has already been paid once for "All Falls Down" for mentioning Jacob The Jeweler (according to The Detroit News, is it too far to assume that Kanye was also paid for one of those 19 mentions?

The brands Kanye mentioned were Avis, Boost, CAdillac, Carier, Cool Whip, Ensure, Geico Insurance, Hennessy, Jacob The Jeweler, Lexus (twice), Mercedes, MTV, Nike (twice), Pepsi, Rolex, Toys R Us and Versace.

ALSO, Lexus has attempted to have pictures of their car put in editorial content in magazines for a price (for example, if there is a picture of a swank restaurant in People, they will pay for a Lexus to be parked out front). So is it too big a jump to say that they will pay for a rap artist to mention their product?

They certainly wouldn't be the first brand to do so; Seagram's Gin paid Petey Pablo to mention their product, and McDonalds is going to pay anyone who will mention Big Mac in a song.
