The Surfer has been my fave for eons (my first exposure to him was when he first clobbered the Hulk, and then tried to cure him). He is unique, powerful and noble. As Reed Richards said (in FF#72, when the Surfer tried to unite humanity by giving it a common enemy to fight, but failed, thanks to a deus ex machina "sonic shark": "In all the universe--there'll never be another like--the Silver Surfer!"

He's using a fraction of his power here, a fraction of the power remaining after Galactus already removed a lot of it.

This is typical of every encounter I have read between Hulk and Surfer. I also post it in contrast to the following post (sorry, just couldn't resist).

There's no Surfer here, but I am using Hulk to comment on the respective power of SS and Thor.

Oh, and what else was interesting about this fight--with respect to the "How does the Hulk keep his pants on" threads--it was the first time I ever saw him fight in his birthday suit (the artists making clever use of shadows and perspective angles).

This is from the same battle as SS knocking Hulk down with his board; it's probably the coolest pic in the issue. I have in the attic a really, really old issue, probably the first time SS and Hulk fought. When I got it, it wasnt in such great shape to begin with...I'll have to find it and see if it's in postable condition.

And with all due respect, it was Avengers #5 (I'm looking right at it). Perhaps the story was reprinted.

I remember an issue where Surfer fought Spider-Man, also where he was hardly giving it his all. Best part: SS wrapping car around Spidey.

It would be interesting to translate the Surfer's power (or any top-tier hero) into real-world numbers, eg, megawatts, though in Surfer's case, it's probably more like giga or even terawatts. That would be enough to supply the entire planet's electrical power needs.

read that issue, I'VE GOT AN SS ESSENTIAL it was very good although that scrap should not have lasted as long as it did even though ss wasn't using his all.

Superhuman powers
The Silver Surfer possesses vast cosmic power granted him by Galactus as a part of the process of physically restructuring the Surfer's former organic body. He has the ability to channel ambient cosmic energy into his body at will, and expel it violently as concussive force or gently as a means to restructure molecules according to his mental design. He can generate beams of energy through his hands with sufficient destructive force to level a large city or generate such subtle amounts of energy to restructure the molecules of the natural pigments within a plant to change its color. The Surfer can rearrange the molecules of matter to create other configurations, and can transmute elements.

The forces binding together the molecules making up the silvery material that composes the Silver Surfer's "skin" are so great that there are few known forces in the universe great enough to overcome them. The inner portions of his body have also been made highly resistant to injury. Thus, the Surfer is invulnerable to most forms of physical harm. He can withstand great extremes of temperature caused by the build-up of friction within atmospheres or the vacuum of space or (within limits) the intense heat within the near vicinity of stars. He can survive without difficulties in the vacuum of outer space and hyperspace, and his body can withstand the stresses of travel at near-light speeds in this universe and of even greater speeds, in hyperspace.

The Silver Surfer has certain cosmic energy enhanced perceptions which enable him, through concentration, to become aware of the patterns of energy which surround him. Accordingly, he can sense great concentrations or deployments of energy anywhere in the world. He has a special affinity for the life energies of living beings, and can use his cosmic powers to augment them to a certain degree. While he can use his power to revitalize life energies and heal the wounded, he cannot create life or restore life to the dead.

The Silver Surfer does not need to eat or breathe since he absorbs life-maintaining cosmic energy directly through his skin. Although his body does not require sleep, his mind must still rest in order to give it an opportunity to dream.

By exceeding 99% of the speed of light (186,000 miles per second), the Surfer can shift himself into hyperspace, a dimension in which velocity is not limited by the speed of light. The Surfer can also compress his own bodily matter so as to shift himself into a so-called microverse. He once used his powers to travel through time, but may be unable to engage in time travel under normal circumstances.

Just curious: who do you guys think drew the Surfer best? I vote for Kirby. He had a lousy sense of anatomy, put he truly possessed the Power Artistic when it came to conveying energy and power.

One of the things I always liked about the Surfer was that he doesnt fly in classic superhero/Superman pose, ie, stretched out horizontally. Do you know how hard that can be on the neck muscles? Also, because he has a board, SS can just hang out, play solitaire, read a book, grab a lass and do the deed, etc etc.

Another pic. I live in NYC, and I thought that was him going by. Crazy me, at first I thought it might be a bird or a plane...

New York looks like some uber-science metropolis in that pic...

In flying the Silver Surfer usually makes use of an object known on Earth as his "surfboard," due to its resemblance to Earth objects of that name. The Surfer's "surfboard" is a construct of unknown materials created by the vast cosmic energies of his former master, Galactus. The board is covered with the same silvery glaze that the Surfer's body is covered with, making it impervious to virtually all forms of physical damage. Few forces short of the cosmic power of Galactus could affect it at all. Even when the board was destroyed, the Surfer was able to reconstruct it easily.

The surfboard is psionically linked in an unknown way with the Surfer's mind. Apparently only a being possessing the Surfer's cosmic powers can cause the surfboard to fly, and it is controlled mentally by him. The surfboard apparently taps ambient cosmic energy in much the same way that the Surfer himself does. Although the Surfer could conceivably utilize his cosmic power to fly without it, the surfboard enables him to fly without the expenditure of any of his own energy.

Power Cosmic helpless before the Power of Bad Writing. Unless we go with my second theory in the Can Surfer Fly w/o His Board thread: Galactus made him this way to keep him from gettin too powerful. Even so, it's a stretch, like Thor fighting Hulk and not using all his powers/hammer to win.

I showed 3 scans of him not flying without his board and one he even says that he cannot do it. I know there is more cases where he didnt fly either but I cannot recall them.

You havnt showed any proof of him flying without his board other than your own theories. Even if you can find proof why couldnt that be called bad writing if he only did it one time and I showed 3 times where he did not.

I too have found many instances of him plummeting w/o his board. Only once can I remember him flying w/o it by firing cosmic blasts from his hands to propel himself (and all it takes is one exception to question the rule). But this is beside the point.

The thing is this: he can do so many things, command all kinds of power. He has levitated pyramids with "degravity thrusts;" when Dr Doom had his power, Doom was able to levitate w/o the board. It just doesn't make "sense" that one so capable should be incapable of simply hoisting himself aloft w/o an aid.

My second theory--that Galactus made SS this way to keep him from getting too powerful--is an attempt to find a reason within the bounds of comic logic, so to speak. But I suspect the real reason is this...

If the Silver Surfer flew without his board, then he wouldnt be the Silver Surfer. I suppose Kirby coulda called him the Silver Soarer, but then, he wouldnt be as unique a character as he is.

It's like why the Hulk never loses his pants: one can come up with all kinds of comic logic, but the bottom line is, he keeps his pants so kids can read the comic.

Yes, he doesn't seem able to fly on his own power without using his power cosmic to propel himself , but a number of cosmic tier characters such as Terrax, Champion, etc. cannot either without aid. However, he has also casually used a fraction of his cosmic power before to recreate his board.

Everyone I've asked and some research on the internet agreed that heroes-reborn hulk was Not signifcantly stronger than Savage Hulk. He just liked growing his hair longer and running around naked.

And from what I've seen in other threads with Thor vs Hulk, Thor aint holding back.

This blast puts Orion near death (the Surfer was ready to fend off the Black Racer coming to get Orion), which surprised me. I'm no fan of Orion, but I always thought he was tougher than this. Eh, crossovers. Can't live with 'em, can't live w/o 'em.

I'm curious as to what people think of this idea regarding the Silver Surfer, an idea inspired by why a guy who can do so much needs something to help him fly.

Suppose that without his board, the Surfer was basically just vastly superhuman: extreme strength, speed/agility, durability, sensory acuity (and I'm talking about all these being taken to levels beyond what he has now), plus a master of all kinds of martial arts, learned from visiting countless planets. Without his board, he cannot fly, he cannot manipulate energy.

With his board: he keeps all the above powers (he can not augment them), Plus now he can fly, shoot bolts, raise shields, rearrange atoms, and so on. I think this might make for an easier character to write for, plus it would make sense as to why he needs the board to fly. Any thoughts?

I'm currently stationed with a computer that cannot support images, so I'm not sure what image you're exactly looking at but... If I remember correctly, this was around Heroes Reborn when heroes like Daredevil and Spiderman were the only non-mutant heroes left.

Surfer was at a stage when he wanted to get rid of his powers (after finding that his brother? was with Shalla Bal), but unfortunately he ended up dividing himself into two people. One became mortal (temporarily lost his memory and walking around NY) and the other was an unfriendly version of Surfer (responsible for the other's memory loss and who held the burden of the painful memories they had shared). Both of the two heroes turned into "salt" I think and the only one that stopped Sufer's wrath was his mortal entity that eventually reemerged with him.

What issue is it that Norrin allegedly turned DD and Spidey into stones?

To correct myself, this was actually after the incident where he found out that Zenn-la was a huge illusion done by Galactus after the "Others" wiped out his civilization.

Point to Ponder (w/o going for the obvious)...

Is the Silver Surfer really "silvery?" I mean, just looking at some of the previous pictures, like when he's in space, he should be nothing but a reflection of space and stars. And you never/rarely see him reflecting himself or his planetary surroundings or anyone he's with.

Probably, his surface is "indeterminant," or some kinda power cosmic thing, which we poor mortals can only best interpret as "silvery."

Though I've never seen Surfer physically push a moon, his punches seem to be around Superman's level, judging by their affect on guys like Orion, Hulk, Classic Abomination, Thanos, Krosakis, and Lunatik.

Surfer has feats that meet or surpass Supes in just about every category except raw strength and (arguably) fighting speed.

These categories include:

Speed
Durability
Blasts (stronger than Heat Vision)
Senses

Monk's Power of the Silver Surfer page is a great resource to look into these feats, but if you like, I can post links or images here.

The below image is the closest I've seen Surfer come to destroying a planet. The energy released from Surfer and Morg's battle was enough to wreck the planet and surrounding satellites. Neither Surfer nor Morg were trying to decimate the planet. That was an inadvertant side-effect of their fight.

and check the list of Silver surfers power, don't mean to disrespect Superman but i has Superman displayed power on SS scale infact feats on SS scale.............no disrepect.now lest not turn this into a Superman thread even though SS can wipe the board with Superman.
