A person, I have found, doesn't need religion to be happy or whole or to have a purpose. In short you need to join a religion unless you want to. Your choice 100% and if you do decide to join one, make sure it's one you believe in and you enjoy and feel is right.
I am kind of a Buddhist, but not in an evangelical kind of way, but if you wanted to become a Buddhist then there is nothing stopping you, so your friend is wrong. Just like if you wished to become a Muslim, or Hindu or Christian. Of course it depends on how active you wished to be in the religion, the more active and serious you take it, the greater the requirements and rules (true in almost all religions)

You don´t need to have a religion to be spiritual, just like me. Many religions are very contradictory, and not that spiritual... and God is not an Institution. But if you want to convert, you should choose a more complete religion like buddhism, or hinduism.

My religion doesn't care for convertions. There are 85, 000 ways to reach the truth and brake the cycle of re-birth. Which path you choose is up to you.
If believing in sole creater is your way, than believe so. If believing that there are 10 000 gods will make you spiritually aware, then chose that path.
Noone should convert you - there is no compulsion in religion.
Religions which preach compultion are marely sheep hearding.

I agree that you do not need to be converted. However, if a structured religion is something you would like, then there are those who will help you. Be careful and picky, check out any religion before you join. I am a Nichiren Buddhist because I like the people and the organization SGI http://www.sgi.org/ . It is pleasing to me to be part of worldwide organization dedicated to peace. The practice is spiritually fulfilling to my heart, and yet, I can still have my own ideas and be me without anyone giving me a bad time. If the religion you find fits all of these same needs or ones more important to you, then go to that religion. The most important thing is that you are happy; always keep that in mind.
If you want one, get one... I recommend Asatru, or Northern paganism... not only can you amaze your friends when you tell them its the state religion of iceland (along with Christianity) but every winter we have a big party and get drunk... we worship the way we want, and pick and choose the best gods for the job... we're very tolerant of other gods (we've got thousands... what's one more!) and every winter we have a big fire, and a party, and get drunk....did I mention the party and getting drunk...?

So let me get this right: you have a party and get drunk. What, no dancing necked and wild orgies?

I agree with you if you want to find out more about a specific religion, what a better place to look than the Bible.
