Actually, he isn't. He was fighting as part of the Droid Army, making him better than not only the Jedi, but also the Droids.

C3-P0 Is a protocol droid while R2-D2 is a matienance droid.

One was constructed to translate and diplomasize.
The other was intended to quickly fix engines and other mechanics in the midsts of battle.
