We had a class discussion on this today and I was interested to hear what everyone here thought about slave descendants getting reparations form the government. What do you think?

Never even heard of that till now. That has to be by far the stupidiest thing our goverment has ever done, and they've done some pretty stupid things..

Most of the time SpellJammer dissaproves of the goverment funding much of anything, but something like this moreso. What does what happend to your anscestors, hell, even your grandmother, have to do with the goverment? Nothing.. Why doesn't everybody get a break simply because bad stuff happend down thier family line? Infact, why not just make the United States into a socialism right now and call it a day?

If we do this, it will cause so much resentment within our country that more harm will be done than has been done. We need to educate people, not pay them off.

True about the natives, but they own peices of land, which they've proven to either make into beautiful lively terrain, or own succesful gambeling industries. What is a black guy going to do with a hundred dollar paycheck for his greatgreat grandfather being shoe shine boy?

Besides, we Americans treat slavery as like the worse thing we ever did. And as said before, slavery go's onto this day in many other countries. And if you don't think Americans don't own slaves today, then you are deffinitly sheltered. Wether it's big buisness sweatshops, or cheap labour on the black market, slave-ownership is nothing new. Exsept now women and children are the popular thing, not negros..

I think I should get reperations for my Irish ancestors who were treated badly coming off the boat. I also think I should get reperations for my Italian ancestors..something bad must have happened to them..aw hell I just want money actually.

i'm still on the fence on this one. should decenants (who did nothing wrong) pay for past mistakes of the older generation, who, if still alive would probably still think they were perfectly correct and justified in their actions? we dont have the "reparation" deal in Australia but our prime minister has made no bones in not appologising to the "stolen generation," which i kind of think is sucky but kind of agree with. its not something that is black and white, such a huge grey area.

yeah but if someone with a family history that includes slavery gives the descendants a small amount of money, they're considered cheapskates and are instantly branded racists again. sure, some of the people who had slaves did go on to be mega rich, but not all of them. i'm sure there are suburbanites with a history of slavery in the family tree, they dont have large sums of money to give away as reperation to past crimes.
if say (and this is an example people, not fact) Bill Gates checks out his family history, finds that his great, great, great, great grandfather had slaves and wants to give them money as an appology, good for him, he could give their familys $25 million each and it'd be a drop in the ocean. but if i looked back and found out i had a great great great great grandfather who had slaves, i couldn't afford to pay their decendants reparations. Seems awfully specific there - do you only want the descendants of slavers to pay money to the descendants of actual slaves? Or do you want all white people to pay to all black people?

I still don't think reparations are the way. What good, prey tell, would a lump sum of money really achieve (other then buggering up the economy)? How much money would it take to wash away the pain? Or would you agree it would be better for money to be allocated to things like education, health care and the like in order to reduce the current day gap?

Still, I can only begin to imagine the can of worms reparations would open if a government was ever blind enough to think it would solve anything. Virtually every nation on the earth has a skeleton in the closet, but the majority of those nations have learned from the mistakes and moved on.

I was really into the other discussion, so if you want to know what ol' Cinemaddiction has to say on the matter, look on pagses 1-3 of the original thread.

In a nutshell, I said that nobody is owed anything by people who were supposedly "guilty by association", and there are blatant instances of racism commited in mainstream America by black people against THEMSELVES than white people. So, I don't even feel slightly obligated to "help" when you can't even help yourself by bettering education, raising awareness, or..frankly..giving a **** enough to open your eyes and see the self-destructive behavior one's using everyday that's resulting in a great social divide.

Realize and appreciate the distinction between pride in heritage and "indirect" racism, then we'll talk. Be grateful for what you have now and use your freedom wisely.

It is an interesting point. I remember, back when I did the units on American history in high school, how one text book noted it was a misconception that the South was fabulously rich. In fact, the best most could say for themselves was they were asset rich, assets tied up in slaves, and large tracks of land that could only be effectively farmed, at the time, by slave labor.

It thus was something of a nasty cycle - the south produced raw materials which went North relatively cheaply where they were manufactured and sold for a profit, as a result the south was often in dept to the North, and as such had to buy more slaves to farm more land in order to make more raw materials in order to keep their head above the line - one of the reasons why the south was so resistant to calls for abandoning slavery.

The point of this little tangent? I am also wondering the grounds for claiming there are so many, many white people living on profits made off of slaves - where on earth is this coming from? How about some facts/proof/statistics to back it up?

i guess the north profited...? but how many of those people are still amazingly wealthy because of any money made back then? thats what i want to know

Exactly - what percentage of the US population is rich based upon inheritance? A very, very small part, which gets even smaller when one removes all the families that made their fortune themselves. It really is a theory that doesn't stand up to history or common sense that there is some massive section of the white population that lives on the profits of slavery. Just like there isn't some massive portion of the German population that lives on Nazi gold and so on.
