I mean, they ended the same with Luke/Anakin flying a ship and being heroes. It looked pretty similar IMO.

It's because The Phantom Menace is everything cramped together. stick out tongue

Sesse
Yeah.

Political problems, ground assaults, space battles, swampy forests vast deserts, space stations, emperor holograms, evil sith masters and a bunch of jedi lords. In addition a trusty ship and two droids.

xyz jedi
hmm probably

Ushgarak
GL likes the episodes to 'rhyme', as he puts it.

thats how Lucas wanted they were all similair ok check it out
TPM: Anakin is found, Queen captured, Jar Jar is found, Qui Gon Dies while fighting main movie villain, leaving Obi Wan to Train anakin Anakin saves the day by destroying droid control ship
ANH: Luke is found, Leia Captured, Han & Chewie discovered, Obi diess in a fight with main villain of the movie, leaves Luke to be trained by Yoda, Luke saves the day by destroying the Death star.
AOTC: Anakin is being trained by Obi wan and has learned the force, Anakin and Padme fall in love, Anakin fights Dooku and gets his hand chopped off
ESB: Luke gets trained by Yoda and learns the power of the force,
Han and Leia fall in love, Luke fights Vader and his hand is cut off
ROTS: Palpatine is captured , Dooku gets his hand cut off and is slaughtered because palpatine convinces Anakin to do so
ROTJ: Han Captured, Vader gets his hand cut off and isnt killed by luke instead ultimate villain dies and Vader turns good

so there you have the only major difference is in the last episodes of the two trilogies one palps turns Anakin to the Dark side evil and Luke resists staying good

Captain REX
As Ush said, GL likes to 'rhyme' the episodes, so that they seem more familiar.

Yeah, especially the Chewie/Han discovered thing, wow. Introducing characters usually happens in the beginning of a movie and maybe less with sequels.
Also you should have pointed out the differences because these don't really impress me.
In A New Hope the main villain did not die, in that movie the space battle was the climax. And the great jedi master dying is to portray just how powerful the enemy is because if the villain just showed up and then getting killed it wouldn't be exciting enough for the actual showdown between the hero and the villain. Also Anakin defeating Dooku with ease and even later defeating Luke with ease was all a way to show how powerful Vader was.
The only differance once again with Vader and Maul was that Vader was constantly surviving for a big climax in ROTJ.

And the queen/princess being captured part is just the main subject of SW again being used by Lucas.

But anyway, I see the The Phantom Menace more of the basic hero/villain story all in one with begin and ending instead of being spread out over other episodes. And the movie used the same old mythological plot again!
To say that this movie rhymed is underrated, this movie was just everything in one movie again, something wich is pretty weird for the SW saga.
The movie isn't even important for the whole SW saga because it didn't explain much or have major continuation stuff in it.

This is all because Lucas apperantly had no time to work it all out before filming the movie. Even at the last moment he took away the idea that Amidala was Obi Wan's wife.
