Ianus
Real name: Magus (English equivalent of his name in his own language)
Occupation: Monarch
Identity: The general populace of Earth is unaware of the Magus's existence
Legal status: Citizen of an unidentified planet
Other aliases: None known
Place of birth: An unidentified planet
Marital status: Unrevealed, perhaps inapplicable
Known relatives: Warlock (son)
Group affiliation: None
Base of operations: An unidentified planet
First appearance: NEW MUTANTS #18

History: The Magus is apparently the ruler of an unidentified world in an unspecified location in outer space. This planet's dominant species is a sentient form of "techno-organic" life, which resembles machinery in various ways. Parents of this race give birth to great numbers of offspring, although the process of birth is apparently very different for them than it is for Earth's life forms. Each child of the Magus must face him in combat to the death before the child has achieved adulthood. One of the Magus's sons, who is now known on Earth as Warlock, fled his native world to avoid the combat which is connected with the process of succession, but was pursued through space by the. Magus himself.

Sensing the artificial Intelligence of the alien Shi'ar computers there, Warlock landed on Earth near Professor Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. There, Warlock became a member of the team of superhuman Earth people taught by Xavier known as the New Mutants.

Shortly thereafter, the Magus came to Earth in upper New York State, still searching for Warlock. There he encountered and battled Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Rogue, three members of the X-Men, the mutant team who, like the New Mutants, are based at Xavier's school. Despite the Magus's vast power, the three X-Men managed to cause him pain. The Magus called off the battle and departed, warning the X-Men to turn Warlock over to him or else he would wreak destruction upon the Earth.

Neither the X-Men nor the New Mutants have encountered the Magus in the following months. It has been theorized that the Magus does not wish to draw attention to himself on Earth or use his full power there because so many other beings who rival his level of power have shown an interest in Earth in the past, such as Galactus, the Watcher, Zeus, and the Celestials. The Magus's present activities and whereabouts are unknown.

Height: Variable. The Magus' height has ranged from 6 feet to .5 astronomical units (45 million miles).
Weight: Variable
Eyes: Black
Hair: In his true form the Magus has no hair although portions of his head resemble hair.

Strength level: At full power the Magus possesses enough strength to rend an entire star in two and hurl part of it through space.

Known superhuman powers: The Magus is a form of "techno-organic" life, meaning the organic substance of his body is similar to metal (as that of Colossus in his armored form is, though in a different way), and his bodily structure resembles machinery in various ways (for example, organic "circuitry-tike" structures can be seen on the surface of his body).

Like his son Warlock, the Magus can change his shape into that of virtually any solid living being or machine. When he takes the form of an Earth living being, he does not look at ail like a machine, but looks exactly as that living being does. When the Magus takes the form of a machine, he retains his intelligence. He uses his own life energies to empower himself when in machine form. (Hence, if the Magus took the form of a helicopter, his own energies would cause it to fly, not gasoline.) The Magus can draw molecules from an unknown, possibly extra-dimensional source to add to his own mass.

The Magus can replenish his life energies by transforming living creatures into techno-organic beings, and then draining their life energies into himself, killing them in the process The exact means by which the Magus transforms other beings is unknown. The Magus must touch his victim to effect the transformation. The Magus can exist in the vacuum of outer space without protection, and can enter and travel through hyperspace at great speed.

The Magus's level of power is immeasurably greater than the present level possessed by his son Warlock. At full power the Magus can grow to the size of a star, rend the star in half without harm to himself, and huh part of the star through space. It is not known how the Magus can so greatly increase or diminish his amount of mass. In roughly human-sized form the Magus's physical strength and resistance to injury appear to be considerably more limited, although still far greater than human.

Apparently the Magus has limited telepathic powers that enabled him to learn English from the minds of the three X-Men he encountered.

Real Name: Unrevealed. "Mephisto," which is short for "Mephistopheles," is a name given him by human beings who mistakenly believed him to be a legendary devil.
Occupation: Ruler of an extradimensional land of the dead, sometimes called "Hell" or "Hades." Identity: Mephisto's existence is unknown to the general populace of Earth. Most Earth people who know of him erroneously believe him to be the Biblical Satan or another legendary devil.
Legal Status: None on Earth. Ruler of his extradimensional land of the dead.
Other Aliases: Satan, Mephistopheles, Lucifer, Beelzebub, the Devil
Place of Birth: Unrevealed
Marital Status: Unrevealed, perhaps inapplicable
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: Former member of the Six-Fingered Hand, a coalition of demons
Base of Operations: An extradimensional land of the dead, sometimes called "Hell" or "Hades"
First Appearance: SILVER SURFER #3

History: Mephisto is an extradimensional demon whose origin is unknown. He rules a fiery pocket dimension that he calls "hell" or "Hades" although it is neither the hell of the Christian religion nor the Hades ruled by Pluto, the Olympian god of the dead. Mephisto calls his extradimensional realm "hell" in order to exploit Earth human beings' belief in a single being of absolute evil, who is often referred to as Satan, who rules such a realm. Mephisto resembles the traditional visual conception of the devil. (It is not known whether this is Mephisto's true appearance, or one that he has adopted in order to resemble the devil.) He also allows himself to be called names that human beings give to their conceptions of devils, such as Mephisto, a shortened form of Mephistopheles, the name given to the devil in the Faust legends. Indeed, Mephisto has allowed people to believe him to be Satan himself. However, Mephisto is not the Biblical Satan, nor is he an actual devil such as those depicted by Judaism and Christianity. The "real" Satan, if such a being exists, has yet to be seen in any account.

Mephisto's domain is inhabited by himself, by lesser demons who serve him, and by the astral forms of certain deceased human beings, which have been trapped in the bodies of demons. These demonic bodies imprisoning human spirits have been magically altered to resemble the deceased's mortal human forms.

Mephisto is continually seeking to add more spirits of sentient beings to his realm by inducing living sentient beings to submit their wills to his. Mephisto apparently seeks primarily to enslave human souls, although he will go after those of extraterrestrials on Earth as well. Indeed, he has made repeated unsuccessful attempts to break the will and enslave the soul of the noble alien known as the Silver Surfer. He has also made attempts to take possession of the soul of the Asgardian god Thor.

The human stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze once made a pact with Mephisto, whom he believed to be Satan, exchanging his soul for Mephisto's saving his stepfather "Crash" Simpson from dying from cancer. But then Mephisto allowed Simpson to die instead from injuries suffered in performing an unsuccessful motorcycle stunt. However, before Mephisto could take possession of Blaze's soul, Simpson's daughter Roxanne arrived and recited a spell of banishment she had read in one of Blaze's occult books. Mephisto was forced to flee without Blaze's soul, but not before he had grafted the essence of the demon Zarathos to Blaze's body. Roughly two thousand years ago Mephisto had taken control of the living flame that was Zarathos's soul. Since Zarathos was too powerful to use as a mere lackey, Mephisto amused himself over the centuries by placing the essence of Zarathos in a human host. Mephisto employed him in that form to claim human souls. After Mephisto grafted Zarathos's essence onto Blaze, Zarathos would continually take control of Blaze's body. The composite Zarathos/Blaze entity became known as the Ghost Rider. (This Ghost Rider is not to be confused with the gunslinger heroes of that name.) Eventually, however, Blaze was freed from Zarathos and Blaze is now free from any bond to Mephisto.

Mephisto has sometimes been impersonated by lesser demons who imitate his form. Such demons are defeated far more easily than the virtually invincible Mephisto. Mephisto has also bound demonds to actor Martin Preston, creating the entity called Master Pandemonium.

At another time, Mephisto initiated a complex plot that in the end would cause Hela (the Asgardian death goddess) trouble in the far future. Hela had recently stolen some twentieth century souls that rightfully belonged to him. Knowing of Hela's curse against Thor, he wished to demonstrate to Thor the horrors of living on a plane of the dead.

First of all, Mephisto transported the Fantastic Four and Franklin Richards physically to his plane. There he tricked Sue Richards into believing that he had made a deal with Reed Richards years earlier. Mephisto then apparently took away Reed's intelligence, making Reed a drooling idiot. Sue agreed to stay in Mephisto's realm if he returned Reed's intellect and returned the Fantastic Four and Franklin to Earth. A desperate Reed thought that the clue might mean the X-Factor team.

He contacted them and asked for their help. X-Factor agreed, and ultimately confronted Sue Richards, under Mephisto's control, and Mephisto, who appeared in a waterfront warehouse. Mephisto tried to get them to bargain with him, but Iceman refused and broke Mephisto's seductive spell. They attacked but he was able to use his illusion powers to confuse them. He then got Jean Grey to agree to sell her soul, in return for the release of Sue Richards and X-Factor. The X-Men then tried to rescue Jean Gray, and Mephisto tricked Rogue into believing he was susceptible to her power to absorb other people's memories and powers.

Wishing to save the X-Men, she used her powers to absorb their personalities. Rogue then found out that Mephisto had been pretending that her powers could affect him. He then drained her soul, plus the personalities of all the X-Men she had absorbed. Mephisto then transported himself and Rogue to where the badly beaten Thor lay, after battling the Migard Serpent. Hela arrived, claiming Thor's soul as her own. Mephisto somehow used Rogue's powers to release Thor's soul from his body. Mephisto captured Thor's soul and then sent Rogue back to the X-Men. Hela arranged for the Avengers to arrive to fight Mephisto, while she tried to free Thor's soul. Mephisto was able to beat the Avengers while Hela was unable to free Thor's soul from Mephisto's mystic mylar.

Mephisto tried to break Thor's soul, with temptation and pain, but he was unable to. Realizing that such a soul on his plane would cause nothing but trouble, Mephisto returned Thor's soul to his body and conceded defeat to Hela. Mephisto then revealed to the Living Tribunal that he had been shamming his weakening power, and that he never really had any claim over Thor's soul anyway. The whole plan had been to give Thor a small taste of what it was like on a plane of the dead. When Thor's soul finally arrived on Hela's plane, Thor would be more determined than ever to cause Hela as much trouble as possible.

Height: 6ft. 6 in. (Mephisto can magically alter his height.)
Weight: 310 lbs. (Mephisto can magically alter his weight.)
Eyes: White
Hair: Black
Skin: Red

Strength Level: Unknown. Mephisto does not engage in hand-to-hand combat. He can magically augment his physical strength to unknown levels.

Known Superhuman Powers: Mephisto possesses vast supernatural power, which is apparently inherent within him. He can use this magical energy for various effects, among which are the augmentation of his own physical strength, levitation, teleportation, the projection of mystical energy as force blasts, invisibility, matter manipulation, image projection, size transformation of his body or other objects or beings, the creation of temporary interdimensional apertures, and so on. There seems to be no single feat beyond Mephisto's capabilities, with two exceptions: the subjugation of any sentient being's will to his own without that being's deliberate submission, and the "reading" of a sentient being's thoughts.

Mephisto also possesses certain powers enabling him to capture and detain the astral bodies (sheaths of the soul) of recently deceased human beings. Mephisto does not have jurisdiction over all the souls of humanity's recently deceased. It is not yet known what the prerequisite conditions are for him to be able to manipulate a human soul, nor are the precise means by which he accomplishes the feat known. Apparently these conditions require that the human being in question willingly agree to submit to Mephisto's will. It is not known how a human being may free himself from bondage to Mephisto (although Johnny Blaze apparently did), nor whether Mephisto will forever retain control of the souls he has obtained. Nor is it known whether or not Mephisto "feeds" on the psychic energies of such souls as other demons do.

Apparently Mephisto can entrap a living human being within his realm through sheer physical force, even if the person did not submit his or her will to him. The woman named Topaz was thus entrapped until her recent escape.

As a demon, Mephisto is functionally immortal and beyond such human needs as food, air, and sleep. His body appears to be composed of some supernatural substance that is more durable and resilient than human flesh and tissue.

Among the demons of various extradimensional netherworlds adjacent to Earth, Mephisto has few rivals in terms of personal power and scope of influence. Only Thog and Satannish come close.

Mephisto's power seems to be connected to his extradimensional domain and diminishes over time spent away from it. Therefore, he usually sends demonic agents to do his bidding.

Real Name: Fred J. Dukes
Occupation: (current) Professional criminal, (former) Circus performer, federal government special operative
Legal Status: Citizen of the United States with a criminal record, pardoned
Identity: Publicly known
Place of Birth: Lubbock, Texas
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: (current) X-Corps(former) Brotherhood of Evil Mutants III, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I and II, Factor Three, Freedom Force, and a frequent partner of Unus
Base of Operations: (current) Unrevealed, (former) Freedom Force headquarters, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia
First Appearance: X-MEN (first series) #3

History: The Blob is a mutant whose latent superhuman powers manifested themselves when he reached puberty. Thinking of himself as no more than, in his own words, "an extra-strong freak," the Blob used his superhuman powers as a performer in a carnival. The original X-Men came to the carnival in their everyday identities to invite him to meet with their mentor, Professor Charles Xavier. Attracted to the beautiful young X-Man Jean Grey, the Blob accepted, and went with the X-Men to Xavier's mansion. There, Xavier asked the Blob to join the X-Men, but the Blob arrogantly refused. Xavier then knew he had to use his mental powers to erase the Blob's knowledge of the X-Men's true identities. But the Blob had no intention of letting this happen, and, after fighting the X-Men, escaped back to the carnival.

The Blob had learned through meeting Xavier that he himself was a superhumanly powerful mutant. Believing himself to be superior to normal people, the Blob took over the carnival. Knowing that the X-Men considered him dangerous because he knew who they really were, the Blob decided to strike out at them first. He led the other members of the carnival on an attack on Xavier's mansion. The Blob hoped to steal whatever scientific discoveries and special weapons that the X-Men might possess and use them against ordinary humans. However, the X-Men defeated the Blob and his allies, and Xavier wiped out their memories of the X-Men.

Later, Magneto attempted to recruit the Blob for his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. A severe blow to the head restored the Blob's memory of the X-Men, and he joined Magneto's Brotherhood in an attack on them. In the midst of battle Magneto launched a powerful torpedo at the X-Men, not caring that the Blob was in the way. Torpedoes struck the Blob but did not seriously injure him. The Brotherhood escaped, and the Blob, feeling betrayed, swore never to trust anyone again and returned to his job with the carnival.

Months later, the Blob met another superhumanly powerful mutant, Unus the Untouchable, and the two of them attempted to frame their mutual enemies, the X-Men, as thieves. This was the start of the Blob's long and close friendship with Unus, which ended only with Unus's apparent death several years later. The two mutants next joined Factor Three, an organization of mutants that attempted world conquest. Unus and the Blob teamed up with other mutants, including Magneto, for other criminal activities, although they were continually thwarted by superhumanly powerful crimefighters.

Eventually, the Blob was recruited by Mystique for her new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Although the Blob continued to operate independently of Mystique's organization since then, he remained a member of the group. Mystique soon became aware of the United States government's increasing anti-mutant activity, and offered the Brotherhood's services to the government, renaming the group "Freedom Force." The Blob participated in Freedom Force's first official mission for the government: the capture of Magneto, his former leader in the original Brotherhood.

As a member of Freedom Force, the Blob was involved in missions that continued to bring him into conflict with superhuman crimefighters, most notably the X-Men, X-Factor, and the Avengers. The Blob enjoyed the fact that he could continue indulging his violent tendencies and fighting his old foes while drawing a government paycheck. However, after a disastrous mission to the Middle East, the government disbanded Freedom Force, and the Blob was once again a free agent.

The Blob soon joined yet another version of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, headed up by his old teammate from the original Brotherhood, the Toad. This team was defeated by the outlaw mutant strike team called X-Force.

Recently the Blob has allied himself with another mutant, the Mimic, and battled members of the current version of X-Force under the orders of an as yet unknown benefactor. The Blob and the Mimic remain at large.

Height: (formerly) 5 ft. 10 in., (after recent further mutation) 8 ft.
Weight: (formerly) 510 lbs., (after recent further mutation) 976 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown

Strength Level: Originally the Blob did not possess superhuman strength in proportion to his size. However, recently he has undergone further mutation, greatly increasing his height and mass, and raising his strength to superhuman levels. The Blob can lift (press) 5 tons, possibly superhuman class 75.

Known Superhuman Powers: The Blob's mutant powers relate to the mass, strength, resilience and indestructibility of his obese body. His primary ability is to become virtually immovable at will as long as he is in contact with the ground. He does this by bonding himself to the earth beneath him by force or will, which in effect creates a monodirectional increase of gravity beneath him. This gravity field extends about five feet in radius from his center of balance. Thus if there is sufficient power to uproot him, it would take the ground beneath his feet in an area corresponding to the radius of the field. Through intense concentration, the Blob is able to extend the gravity field beneath him farther than five feet.

The Blob's body has several unusual properties in itself. The first is its superhuman resistance to injury. The fat tissues that comprise the Blob's epidermis are able to absorb the impact of rifle bullets, cannonballs, bazooka, and even torpedoes. The larger of these projectiles recoil from his body at one half the force of impact. The smaller one imbed themselves in his layers of fat tissue, enabling him to eject them by merely flexing his muscles. The Blob's nerve endings do not relay any tactile perception to his brain which are near the threshold of pain. The fat tissue of his epidermis is resilient enough to revert to its normal shape within second after deformation caused by impact. It is virtually impervious to physical injury. The Blob's skin cannot be punctured, lacerated, frostbitten, or ravaged by any skin disease, due in part to the skin's greatest elasticity and toughness and in part to the highly accelerated rate at which his skin cells grow and replace themselves. His skin is somewhat less resistant to burning.

It is not yet known if there is an upper limit to the Blob's ability to absorb impact. While he could easily survive a head-on collision with a bus traveling at a hundred miles per hour, even a highly ferrous meteorite fifty feet in diameter on top of him at terminal velocity, it is not known whether he could survive a collision with an object traveling at near light speed. Further, it is not known whether his skin's imperviousness to heat could survive the 11,000,000-degree heat at ground zero of a multi-megaton atomic blast.

Special Limitations: Eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are not as resistant to injury as the rest of his body.
