Actually even though they always talk bad things or saying they both hate each other, they will protect each other. Only what's keeping them from being friends is sasuke's intention to kill his brother Itachi, which leading him into darkness.

I think he only kept Sasuke alive because Sasuke is only one that could stop him for going over power! There is proff that Itachi likes to aviod battles! Which is not making him a total Villian...but i would'nt know!

Naraku a weak ass demon who only gave into the dark side because of Kikyo and is in need of the shards just to survive...Itachi in the other hand doesn't have a need for anything and proves he's one of the strongest characters by his own worth...

hell na naraku gave his heart away meaning he can kill kikyo and he did duh if u seenthe episode meaning he could kill itachi easy itachi would just be a waste of his time and don't say no one can defeat itachi because he has the mangeyou sharingan and he can create his own world because naraku can too meaning he could take down itachi and it would'nt be a problem he would problly asorb him and have lots of powers and itachi would'nt be able to do a thing man kagora could defeat kisame and problly itachi too ha!
