I was suprised to not be able to find a thread for this.
Michael Mann is remaking the 80's TV show and will be staring Jamie Foxx and Collin Farrell. I was farily skeptical about the quality of this. But I saw a trailer today which is hosted by Bicardi Live. You technicaly have to be 21 to view this in the states but anyone who can do math can get into the site anyway..
http://www.bacardilive.com/ is where you will find the trailer the official site is here http://www.miamivice.com/main.html I believe this trailer will be shown with King Kong as well.

Mann knows what he's doing, I have hope.

yea it looked like a more serious bad boys

Their are some things that shouldn't be attempted and this is one of them, however being a sucker I am sure I will go see it....unsure yet if I would pay big dollar and see it at the movies or wait for it to go to DVD.

Man, Mann makes marvelous movies!
'The Last Of The Mohicans' was stunning, 'Heat' was spectacular, 'The Insider' was riveting and 'Collateral' was one of the most hypnotic movies I have seen this year...
'Miami Heat' will be amazing, I'm sure...
Myth
Looks a little too "extreme". By that I mean it looks like one of those movies where there will be ridiculous chases with things blowing up everywhere. If its not, it could be pretty good.
Ya Krunk'd Floo
I guess you don't know much about Michael Mann if you think it'll be like that...
Mando
Mann Takes things roughly, and softly at the same time.
Its Really hard to explain...

Well, we'll see. I didn't necessarily like Collateral but you're right that it didn't have any explosions.

What I meant was, His Action scenes aren't very violent or brutal. But very suspenseful.

i saw the trailer for this. jamie foxx as tubbs? colin farrell as crockett? what the hell are they thinking?
all i can say is that they had better not try and make it comedic as they did starsky and hutch.
Mando
Well, I'm sure it wouldn't be that funny. They seemed pretty serious with the linkin park song in the trailer.
Rogue Jedi
still, jamie foxx as tubbs? thats terrible casting. colin farrell MIGHT be good as crockett.

Hy everyone i'm new on this forum
I watched the 80 series with much joy and really liked it

so i hope they can matched the series or more

First it was a television series.

I can live with Colin Farrell as Crocket, but I'm not so sure about Foxx as Tubbs. Either way, it'll be a kick ass movie.
Grimm22
The action was amazing.
The acting was awesome
However, the story was weak and boring.
I didnt know what the hell was going on in most of the talking scenes, and frankly I didnt care. Expecially any of the scenes with Colin Farrell and his love intrest.
About half the theater walked out because 50% of the movie is just this crap.
However, the ending and the begining were awesome.

pr1983
i saw the trailer and its been a while since a trailer's got me this excited about a movie...
i'm hoping it lives up to it...

im not saying your lying but im gonna guess thats a HUGE exageratio nthat half the theater walked out.
The story has definitely been done before. And the movie actually sorta moves slow. But mann does a good enough job wiht it and the visuals are great.

"Based on the hit 1980's television show, "Miami Vice" follows the exploits of vice squad detectives Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) in the seedy underworld of Miami and beyond as they get dragged into a complex undercover operation to bring down a drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his criminal empire.
While the "Miami Vice" show was known for its stylishness--often above and beyond its characters and stories--"Miami Vice," though still very stylish, is every ounce a Michael Mann crime film, with as strong an emphasis on character and performance as on visual style. The story itself isn't particularly original; Crockett and Tubbs deal with the problems of going deep undercover, particularly Crockett as he finds himself falling for the kingpin's aide-de-camp (Li Gong), and as their personal lives keep getting more and more tied up with their professional responsibilities. It's old hat, but Mann does it very well."

Well I saw the first showing so there were only like 7 people in the theater besides me and my freind.
And 3 or 4 guys left the movie due to the constant blabbering on with Colin Farrel and that chick.
Seriously Mann should have just cut out the middle and went from Begining to End, because those are the awesome parts.
Especially because of how badass Jamie Foxx is in the fight scenes

Morning_Glory
so was there a lot of action... I dont want to see it if there isnt very many action scenes

I hope from whats been siad it ain't that bad the series was bad ass I liked the intro I don't think they could make it any better than the oldskool Miami Vice

There is a small action scene in the begining and some explosions and good stuff like that, however after that you have to deal with 60 minutes of a bland boring plot and the stupid relationship with Colin Farrell and some chick (I forget her name).
However there are a couple of awesome action scenes in the last 45 movies.
The last fight sequence was amazing

they took the name and the character names from the tv show and thats about it. other than that its not based on anything.

Meh, looks like a rental for a rainy night.

how was the score? was there as much of that hip hop crap as shown in the trailers? usually the music plays a big part in Mann's movies..was this any different?
VenomVA
The SCORE is GREAT!! It was a good movie, some of the things done reminded me of the TV show. Most of the time I saw Jamie and Colin, not Crockett and Tubbs. Rarely do you see Crockett and Tubbs and not Jamie and Colin. The chick that plays Gina is BAD A$$!!!!!! Didn't care for the black chick that played Trudy
P.S. The song Auto Rock by Mogwai at the end of the movie is OMG!!!!! I got the soundtrack just for it.

I just saw the movie, and my attitude leaving the theater was "what the hell did I just see?" I'm a huge Michael Mann fan, having seen all of his films, and I consider one of his most difficult to analyze, "The Insider", to be my favorite.
But like several people have mentioned before, most of the time I kept thinking in the movie just what was going on. Was I missing something between scenes. The dialogue was very cryptic and in some cop-code, so that most of the time it was lines like "There's undercover, and then there's which way is up". I don't mind cool catch phrases like that, but it seemed like every other line from the two leads was something like that. After a while it got pretty annoying.
And another little nit-pick, what's the deal with that digital camera making some night shots look so grainy. I fail to see the miracle of the digital camera used in this film, if it can't even capture night shots crystal clear. (At least film can do that). It made certain scenes stand out to the extreme, and not on the good side when scenes would shift from crystal clear clarity to grainy.
But Michael Mann, as usual, has his actors give great performances, and no director alive can match the coolness of the environments he surrounds his characters in. On the look alone Miami Vice gets 10 stars. And the soundtrack was awesome. Mann has the greatest tastes when it comes to picking which music plays on which scenes. But as for the confusing storyline and bad dialogue, it gets a 5 out of 10.
Such a bummer too. I was so looking forward to this one. Hopefully Mann returns to his glory in the next pic.

Agree. Haven't seen the movie yet, but Foxx doesn't feel right at Tubbs.

this movie isnt really about the show at all though. THey took the names of characters, the name miami vice, and thats it. most of the film does not take place in Miami, nor does it have anything to do with the vice squad or with vice in general (except in some vague, thematic way). If it weren't based off an old television show, the title wouldn't make any sense at all.
Grimm22
Although im not a fan of the original show, I can understand how angry I would be if they did this to some of my favirote old shows like Magnum P.I. or Knight Rider.
Speaking of Magnum P.I. I head that they want to cast George Clooney as Magnum?!?! What the hell is up with that?!?!

Ok, saw this, and...
all style, very little substance... good action, as rare as it was... like, first ten mins, last 30 mins... everything else is colin farrell seducing an asian woman who can barely speak english, and yes, given my leniency when it comes to asian women she was awful. So yeah, she was crap... and the nudity made so much of an attempt to be tasteful there ended up being very little of it, especially where the women are concerned. ill be happy if i never have to look at jamie foxx's backside again though...

I really didn't like it. I thought the acting was awkward. And the plot was simply irrevelant. The camera annoyed the crap out of me though. A camera is supposed to draw you into the movie, if you are aware of the camera, and its movements, then your detracting from the movie and bringing you out of the experiece and that happened far too much. And too many scenes looked like Joe Smith shot them with his handheld. This isn't Blair witch, damn.
The only good thing about this movie is the action was well done, but still, one of the poorer movies I've seen.
JerichoCross
Imo, I thought it was good. Not as mind blowing as Heat, but still good.

Not a very good sign when a Will Farrell movie knocks you out of first place.

Well the most a Mann film has made was around $101 million, so I'm not suprised.

Ooo, probably should post this here...
Oh, Mann...I just got back from Miami Vice. It's easily the best movie I've seen this year. It was incredibly stylish and unbelievably cool. It was almost like seeing myself in movie-form.
Great movie. Farrell was excellent, and the drug king pin was more menacing and malevolent than any 'baddie' I've seen in the last few years.

I like Jay-Z just fine, and I agree it fit in perfectly. I had shit to do, and it was taking a little too long for anything to happen, so I turned it off. I'll definitely be watching it since you think it's the best yet though.

Obviously not everyone will agree with me, but I find Michael Mann's movies to be as close to cinematic perfection as it is possible to get. I just dig the style, music and colors he uses. All his movies are just so damn cool.

I gotta say after reading a few of these posts I really wasnt looking forward to seeing this movie but decided to watch it anyways and frankly I thought it was pretty good. It wasnt a masterpiece but it was pretty interesting. I thought the japanese gurl was hot, maybe because I got a thing for asians that can speak spanish. I think I may have liked this if it were called anything but 'Miami Vice'... I thought it was supposed to be an action movie, and when it wasn't I just totally tuned out and didn't follow any of the plot.
Didn't like how it was filmed either... it looked really video-y. Like well-lit news footage. Probably another reason I couldn't take it seriously as a film... it just didn't feel like one.
Ya Krunk'd Floo
The 'grainy' effect was to add a sense of realism, but the cinematography was still exceptionally beautiful. I loved the bleached-out color of Cuba, in contrast with the midnight blue of Florida.
PS. It's still the coolest movie of last year.
BackFire
I thought this movie was genuinely bad. The storytelling was messy and sloppy. The music choice seemed forced and tried too hard to be cool or trendy, and the cinematography, while stylish and pretty, seemed stuck in "Collateral Land", meaning that Mann remembered how successful Collateral was, and decided to use the same style just because of the prior movie's success and popularity, and not necessarily because it was the best choice for this particular movie. For evidence of this see the beginning of the film, in a night club scene, very similar to the one in Collateral, where Jamie Foxx, I kid you not, does the exact same pose-look-past-the-camera-thing after kicking some dudes ass, just like Tom Cruise in, you guessed it, Collateral.
Most importantly I just felt bored throughout, the movie just wasn't engaging, the characters were hollow and just devices to push the style and get to the next "cool scene" and the plot just didn't have the momentum to really catch my interest.

Oh dear god, I completely disagree with every single aspect of your post! Take it back, or I will cut off thy penis.
It was a very original movie in the way it jumped straight into the plot. There was no back-story, no retarded explanations of the plot, and such minimal dialogue between the two leads that they managed to convey the intensity of the situation through their physical presence. Mann has a very dominant technique and 'look' that run through all his films, so it's not surprising that there are similarities in tone with Collateral, but it certainly isn't him pandering to gain popularity.
Again, take it back or the penis goes!
BackFire
What you call original I call lazy storytelling. Lack of backstory is fine, but what I can't forgive is a lack character development and plot progression.
Yes, there was minimal dialogue at parts, unfortunately there was also an over abundance of it at parts, and it wasn't even important dialogue, it was boring filler speak. It's as if he didn't have dialogue when he should have, when it would have pushed the story forward and developed the characters and their relationship, but instead had dialogue when it wasn't really necessary, between characters that were secondary at best.
And I think it's very possible that the style of the movie was done to pander to the popularity of Collateral. There weren't just similarities in tone, the look and even sound of the film was almost directly lifted from Collateral. This wasn't really a problem, I guess. Like I said, the style was cool and it looked good, but I can't help but wonder if maybe the studio execs put some pressure on Mann to overemphasize the style.
My disappointment may have also stemmed from me thinking Collateral was so damn awesome, and expecting more greatness from this one.
Oh well, bye bye penis, it's been fun. Jokes on you though, to cut off my penis you have to touch it, and I'll like that, far more than you.

We really must have seen two different films - or, wait a second...yeah... - or we are two different people! The movie I saw, while intentionally distant in tone, didn't suffer from a lack of character development. Furthermore, because Crockett and Tubbs are undercover, don't you think it's appropriate that their true characters remain hidden? Also, the dialogue was again based in reality because it wasn't simply used as a device to propel the plot. It was merely people talking as things happened, and I liked it like that. As for the plot itself, it just got deeper and deeper and deeper as the movie went on!

Although I love Collateral, if any movie of Mann's shows pandering to the behest of the studio, it's that film! The beginning and middle of that movie were superb, but the finale degenerated to a typical thriller. As for the style of Miami Vice, again it's indicative of all of Mann's movies, and not a mere replication.

I'm still not liking the story or the characters. Mind you I did my best to ignore the original TV series (which I think it happen the first time when I saw the film in theaters) this time I let go of it and try to watch it with a more open interest.
This time I enjoy the action sequences.....but still not enough to say it's a good film. It's like lying to myself and thinking I'm enjoying something I really don't like.
