I think the problem is that live drum-solo's get stretched out to much as they often are performed outside of the band's real feel. A technical display of skill without the soul in many occasions.
But fused in a song, a drum solo can be very entertaining if it knows it's place.

There is no point in doing any kind of solo just for the heck of it, if it doesn't fit with the music. Doesn't matter witch instrument you play. Many guitar solos in rock songs, as an example, are quite unnecessary. They're just playing because it's the stereotype. Boooring...

Check out "The Drum Thing" by john coltrane quartet on the album cresent for a great drum solo.

John bonham-whole lotta love (off of how the west was one album) Not sure which portion of the song seeing how that song is 23 minutes, but there is a section where bonham true to character goes butty on an untouchable solo
