School closed as police search for 'man in attic'

AN INTRUDER has been hiding in the roof of a secondary school, just yards above pupils and teachers.

But a massive search operation involving sniffer dogs, firefighters, police and security guards has so far failed to find the mystery man at Crofton School, Lewisham.

Concern was raised a few weeks before Christmas when staff at the school in Manwood Road noticed signs that someone was "coming and going", said associate headteacher Rob Cooper.

Some ceiling tiles had been moved and the security alarm was being tripped.

On December 30, the police, fire service and sniffer dogs searched the building but without success.

It was thought the intruder had gone away - until Monday, when a teacher called for a security guard after hearing a noise overhead.

The guard spotted a man running through the roof space, but was unable to catch him. A search found no evidence of any lair where the uninvited visitor could have been hiding out.

On Tuesday evening the school closed so that a major search operation could be mounted involving 24-hour security guards. It was still going on as we went to press.

The school hopes to re-open on Monday, as long as it has been established the man is no longer in the building.

However, Year 11 pupils, who are taught in a separate building which the intruder has not got into, are continuing with their classes as usual.

Mr Cooper said the main school building was large with a number of ceiling areas on each floor but nobody could understand how the man, who is described as black, had got in.

He said: "We are totally baffled. There is no sign of any threat , no signs of entry, and there is high-security fencing around the school. How he got access, we do not know."

He added: "The safety of pupils and staff is paramount."

A police spokeswoman confirmed officers and other agencies were still searching the building.

Interesting, to say the least.

I wonder if it's the same man from behind the grassy noll.

Who is described as black? That's very informative. The wording made me laugh for some reason.

Not sure why, but I am expecting it to turn out to be some poor old homeless guy who got in through the electrical service entrance (well, we had one in our school)

Same here.

A description consisting of a single word, which isn't even stated as definite.

Um ... just what sort of description do you think the guard, who apparently only managed to see the guy as he was running away, should have been able to give? His eye color? Honestly, people see subtext in the dumnest things.

Who do you think the intruder is? The Flash? He could have easily seen the skin color or close to skin color and some sort of clothing. I don't recall a guard seeing the man and looking back on the article it does refer to who saw the man, just a description being black. Plus if it was a guard even more so to the point. He should have a trained eye for these kind of things. One word descriptions are pointless.

hoyl crap this got me disturbed

That's not really the point; it's the wording.

They could have said the guard didn't get a good look at the intruder, but did see that he was black.

'Black' is hardly a 'description'.
