Me and a new band formed and had our first band practice today. It was terrible; everybody doing their own things. Is this normal?

i'm sure your band will turn out fine

my friend is in a band and he is good so I would not expect him to mess up

We were thinking of having a saxaphone in one song!

Its just the fact that they are trying to do really hard songs! I mean we haven't even practiced properly but they want to do a guns n roses song!

Do any of you know how hard it is to do a 5 minute Slash solo! Your fingers are torn at the end of it!

Well maybe its not a good idea to do hard songs because my friend has done something weird to his wrist.

Problem is it involves doing a jazz song. It doesn't really appeal to our demographic.

Anyway the only reason we are doing it is so our friend gets to play in it. It would be great for him.

Yea but nothing heavy. No metal or anything. Oasis, I'd like to do some Stereophonics, maybe some Killers, Bloc party.

Some of it is rock, Brit Pop. That sort of stuff.

Problem is two of them are already in bands. So it could be that they say Feck it and pack it in.

I am a guitarist. But we still haven't decided whether me or the other guitarist will be lead.

In the band we have three guitarists 1 bass guitarist and obviously a drummer. I think that the singer will have the lesser guitar part.

What do all of you guys play?

Had one.. people lost interest though. Lead guitar! Rhythm is boring and you don't get the solos.

Here's a name for the band...The Provisional Prophecy.

If you use the name I must get a cut of every bit of money the band makes from gigs.

If you are so different that jam sessions are combustible and none of you have any similar ideas or a shared goal somewhat, then it's not going to work.

If you all want completely different things, then discuss it and see what you can combine together. If you can't gel and can't work together, you're doomed.

We are all into the same music, so thats not a problem. There is one person who likes other types of music and he keeps wanting to do some of that type of music. But the rest of the band wants to stick to one type of music.

Hopefully as we get more experience of jamming together we will be able to give each other more time instead of just playing our own stuff.

Liking the same music doesn't necessarily make for great band chemistry. From what you're saying, there's not enough open-mindedness to hear each others ideas. You should listen to what everyone has to bring to the table, it's a band thing.

Don't worry I know that. The point I am trying to express is that this particular person is wanting to play a type of music none of the other band members like and none of the demographic like.

We have three guitarists. We were all playing different stuff with the drummer but we need to play together now.
