I noticed recently that the whole law system is (in my opinion) way to forgiving.
This may sound harsh but i say once your sent to prison you forfeit your rights.
Not all of them per say , the basic human rights are always needed , but any others should get the boot .

BF Skinner would disagree.

I agree 100%

I agree. Once you go to prison you forfeit your rights.
It pisses me off how these prisoners can sue the jails because the bed they sleep in has a lump in it, or they are not happy with the food etc.

Victor Von Doom
That's slightly different to stripping them of all rights bar the minimum.
Such behaviour may satiate the appetites of rabid right-wingers, but it's not actually the best strategy in rehabilitative terms, which, after all, is relevant to all but a few prison sentences.

I agree, While prision might be concidered "easy" by some of you, the end result is these people are damaged goods when they leave prision. They don't have a hope of getting a job or a future. So they will break the law time and time again to survive...
Makedde
They will often break the law as soon as they are released because they enjoy being in prison so much.

Agreed and the Punishment is loss of liberty not dignity. Education and Integration leaading to rehabilitation and social inclusion are the only things that work.

great.... So then we have to fork out for them in prison/police/innocents... the list goes on...
This just creates a burden on society... We need to turn these people around so they contribute,
But with the media victimising soo many cases, these people don't get prison times they get life sentences even when they come out, we then have to pay to keep them safe. Sure they did a crime, But once someones done the time have they not paid for there crime? There might be a case that some people get of lightly.. true this does happen, then we need to have longer jail terms, Not create dead weights...

Agreed and many people in prison are educationally sub normal, they need to learn skills to enable them to have jobs and function. Longer Jail terms for crimes wouold worry me as it removes hope and turns prisons into more violent places according to all studies. People without hope have little chance of rehabilitation.

Some people could name certian cases where prisioners don't deserve a second chance because the media told them so.... also take this case...
Someone drink drives and kills someone..
They then get 7-10 yrs..
The family gets a "life sentence" with the loss of a loved one...
that drink driver gets out and continues to have a normal life.
doesn't seem fair really.... What do you say to the familty???

I still think this is subjective and the drunk who probably sober is a decent person would have to live the rest of his life with the guilt inside him, that is a hell of his own making but worse than any prison sentence. Guilt can drive people to do good. Hope and the chance of redemption is always needed.

Prison is just an idea that we support and make happen. If the infrostructure were to fail and all prisoners were to escape, they could take over and force us, the innocent, to become prisoners their prisoners. Then, they could start threads like this, and in their minds it would be justice. It's all just an idea on a piece of paper, that was taken into affect. Rights are simply a figment of our imagination that we actually practice and control. That could easily change at any given time if we are not careful.

If prison was a place that no one wanted to go, the worst place to be, even for bad people that don't seem to care about anything, people would try harder to avoid going. Pretty simple. Unfortately, prison isn't as bad as it could be. For too many people, going to prison is not scary enough to make them behave. IT REALLY SHOULDN'T BE THAT HARD TO FIGURE OUT!

What rights do you take away?
Alll your going to do is turn that criminal into more of criminal by doing that.
So when he is released, (you cant keep them there all the time) he'll just do more criminial acts.
Also be more specific in terms of who gets the rights taken away. For somebody who assulted somebody because of heated arguement and broke the guys jaw, and then gets 3 years, should you take away he's rights? Hell no, the guy made a mistake, he got punished for it. He serves his time and then he should live his life.
I do agree on some cases like serial killers, first degree muders, second degree.
And remember, the justice system is about rehabiliting people, not punishing them.
You can make an arguement that the new superjails in the states are inhumane and they create more violence and unlawlful people because of the lack of social interaction. You have to remeber, these are still humans.
Makkede, you generlize way too much. Not all criminals think that, some maybe, but not all.
Also, people say to keep people in jail longer, but you know that it costs alot of taxpayers money?

Not true, ese. I've been in the Big House, and now I'm the successful owner of my own auto shop.

She sure does.

If you really want to make the Justice system fair, yet a good deterrant, work out a deal with Russia. First do everything possible to work out the biases in the justice system and free all nonviolent drug offenders. Reform the juvenile system. Then relocate Pelican Bay to Siberia. That way, everyone's happy.
