Now all they have to do is not get caught...

Fortunately, or unfortunately however you look at it, I doubt there is going to be a smoking gun. So they probably won't.

Imperial_Samura
Actually, they will have to launder it, or sit on it for a long time, to be able to use it at all. All of it's numbered, and easily trackable should it start turning up on mass. Their best bet would be to get it out of the country, then gradually have it changed somewhere with a poor track record in picking up such things.

Still, damn crooks, hope they get what's coming to them, which is a long stay at a five star prison.

LOL that right there almost reminded me of the first scene in the movie The Transporter.

Genius.. kidnapping the depot chief.. reminds me of the movie 'Bandits' with Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton.

Sir Whirlysplat
They are saying it's likely 50 million was taken now!!!

pfft. Group 4, who were in charge of some of UK's prisons, actually allowed inmates out on Friday and had them back by Sunday night; Done on a regular basis Group 4 became known as the laziest and corruptable security corps in the UK.

I voted Crime Pays. That and dishonesty. From what I know you have more of a chance ****ing your way through life and ****ing other people's life up rather than have them **** you up.

apparently 2 people have been arrested...or so John Snow is jabbering over my left shoulder at this very moment

This heist made me think of 'Bandits' as well.
Clever move by the robbers, simultaneously holding the manager and his family hostage can get you around alarms and to the loot with little chance to run in to any cops. And it can be done without any real violence and within a short time span as you don't need explosives, machinery, crowd control or fancy getaway driving.
Al that remains indeed is not getting caught afterwards, which is the hardest part. They do have witnesses and owning 40 mil. can make your behaviour a bit noticeable...

I wonder if there will be any preventive measures taken to try to avoid robberies like this in the future.

All means of escaping are supposedly being covered by the police. Airports, Ferry ports and banks are obviously on alert.

The first pictures of a male have been released. They have named him as 51-year-old Colin Dixon. He is thought to have played the part as the police officer who stopped the manager of the depot.

Yeah well I think you've got alot worse crime and you can't exactly say that your environment is safe. I'd rather have this than innocent people killed in shootings.

I think it went out through Folkstone in the hour before the Alarm was raised probably by container ship.

Makedde
It will be awhile before they spend the money. They could just take it to a casino, and filter the money out that way...couldn't they? laughing

The wisest thing to do is to get the loot out of the country ASAP indeed.
But the trouble with container-ships is that their cargo goes through custom security. Not all containers will be checked, but you don't want to take the risk over 40 mill.
A private vessel or plane might be safer, but those might get checked as well. You could divide the loot over several of these and man them with expendable thugs to get away with at least a respectable percentage of the cash. Then again, you'll have to send them to different destinations without them knowing the destinations of their colleague smugglers, to prevent one of them that get caught to snitch on the rest. And to have the smugglers that make it deposit the money on the same account will be noticed, so you still have to get the money back together again 'real-life' if you want to avoid years of money-laundry.

What I would do, and praise to the robbers if they had the same idea, is to take advantage of the current ocean-sailing race that is happening right now.
Dozens of fairly large sailing-vessels are in a race from America to Europe right now, and they A) come across England and B) are supplied by speedboats regularly. None of the sailor's or suppliers ever get checked for smuggling!
I would get at least 2 teams in the race itself (takes an afford, but hey 40 MILLION) and load the loot on those boats through the supplying-boats and have it sailed right in to Rotterdam where you can have your hands on it within a week after the race.

Think about the weight of the money on the boat.

Pandemoniac
40 million in hundred's weighs less than 200 kilo's, even if they got a bunch of smaller bills as well the weight still won't go over 300 kilo's. Divided over 2 boats that wouldn't be much of a burden.
And it's not like they need to win the race now is it?

It's a damn masterplan!

Pandemoniac
Aw crap, miscalculated there... Weight will be something around 1200 kilo's. Sorry, hangover...
Ok, that is something that deserves some extra thought.

Still a damn masterplan!

cool_dudes_rule
yeah apparently they have got caught now.
