The destroyer was originslly a weapon against the celestials. Odin, having seen it fail, now wants revenge and travels through marvel and dc, seeking out the most powerful minds. He then requests Galactus, who also would like the celestials gone (they're bound to clash eventually, he eats planets, they try to seed planets), to use his high level spirit vampirism to suck in these willing minds. Galactus then transmits the collective consciousness into the destroyer which is dispatched to fight the celestials. Who wins?

I think the amount of "life forces" inhabiting it increases its size and possibly power. I'm pretty sure the popular picture of the Destroyer dwarfing the Earth is when all of Asgard was powering it.
