It's a windows media file and I click "open with itunes" but the song doesnt appear in itunes. How do I get it to?

You don't. Apple programs won't support Microsoft formats. If you attempt to import the song, however, it will convert it to MP3 or AAC, depending on your CD copy settings. If it is licensed WMA, then it won't even do that.
