WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 -- World Premiere

Sequel to THQ's million-selling franchise confirmed; Multiplatform release on PS3, Xbox 360 a reality. First screens and info inside!
by Jeremy Dunham

March 30, 2006 - It's WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Illinois this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, the folks from Yuke's, THQ, and WWE are going to make a special announcement tomorrow evening. To be revealed at the annual Superstar Challenge prior to this weekend's festivities (which includes the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and WrestleMania itself), the announcement will officially confirm the next iteration of the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007.

In addition to confirmation that the game is coming to stores later this year, the most interesting piece of information actually relates to the systems on which the game is coming out -- which embrace PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions besides the expected PS2 and PSP SKUs.

This move not only marks the first time in the franchise's history that a SmackDown title will appear on two system generations at once, but also, the first time that the game will be headed to a platform other than one created by Sony.

"We are pleased to bring our highly successful WWE SmackDown vs. RAW franchise to next generation consoles," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president, THQ worldwide publishing. "As the publisher of the number one wrestling videogame brand in the world, we are eager to take this franchise to new heights by offering the game to current-generation, next-generation and handheld gamers."

"We are excited about the next groundbreaking release in the multimillion dollar SmackDown vs. RAW franchise," said Nelo Lucich, vice president of interactive, JAKKS Pacific. "WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 combines ambitious, exciting features, such as the interactive fighting area within the crowd and a brand new analog control grappling system, which enhance the WWE videogame experience. We are confident this debut will offer a compelling sports entertainment experience for the next generation of gamers."

So what's this about a new analog control system and interactive crowd fighting? Specific details about those features are still a little vague, but we do know that gamers will be able to take their brawls into the audience just like on WWE programming, while also experiencing what THQ is calling "more realistic fighting" and "more intuitive movement." As stated earlier, though, what that means exactly we don't know.

What we do know, however, is that a number of improvements in other areas will certainly make the cut. Season Mode, for example, is said to feature "an unprecedented level of player choice" compared to previous games, while in-ring and outside-the-ring hotspots (which can be used to inflict bodily damage in special ways) have also been included. Moreover, arenas in SVR2K7 will be fully interactive to the point of supporting unspecified environmental damage and players will have the ability to take signs and other objects from fans and use them as weapons.

Speaking of weapons, there will be plenty of those too (more than in the last game) and brand new "High Impact Combination Moves" that round out each superstar's arsenal. Further enhancements, like an expanded General Manager mode, online play with voice chat support (finally!), high-definition displays for PS3 and 360, and updated rosters will also be included. Multiplayer fans should also be happy to note that up to six players will be able to wrestle each other at once for all three console iterations. Version details for the PSP, however, disc are still a mystery.

As always, there's still plenty to be learned about WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007 and we hope to bring you another update as soon we can. In the meantime, we invite you to check out the first "next-gen" screenshots of the game and remind you to check back with us again over the weekend should we learn anything more.

go to ps3 ign to see pics. I can't post pics yet.

its the same thing over and over a again ots gets old

BackFire
The entrances are nice, but the graphics in the ring, and the gameplay doesn't look particularly spectacular.

They need to just go back and use the style of the old N64 Wrestling games, those were the best. The new ones have horrible collision detection and awkward, stiff animations.

Superman_045
I'll probably get this one for the 360.

PVS
i'll most likely pick it up as well. and i agree that it seems typical of a wrestling game, but really, there is no point in reminiscing about the simplistic glory of thq's n64 wrestling games. granted it was a golden age of wrestling games...but its over.

i do wish they took a page from those days and made the fighting more fluid and perhaps a bit slower in pace. in the newer wrestling games they seem to be jacked up on speed.

Superman_045
And the character's get hurt to easily, I hated that in '06. I'd like for the game to be good, medium paced & have it where it doesn't take a few punches & a bodyslam to get an opponent hurt. And characters like Eddie Guerrero (R.I.P) & Shawn Michaels reverse TOO much. Also, the stamina doesn't need to wear out so quickly.

SVR 07 is by far the greatest game in the history of wrestling. The gameplay had a complete overhaul, and the only bad thing is the hit detection, and fast matches.

Anyways, great roster, great GM mode, great season, great everything.

9.3/10

I like the game. smile

The create a wrestler is severely dumbed down, which sucks. But it deserves credit because the created wrestlers finally look like the real wrestlers, instead of cartoons.

Story mode was cool, but you keep fighting the same 2-3 guys the whole year. GM mode is a nice mode if you like menus roll eyes (sarcastic) .

Online is cool, but got I wish i could defend belts in something more than 1 on 1. Triple threats and fatal 4ways are still so much more fun.

New control is cool, but 90% of the moves are the same, you just do them different. The ultimate moves are awesome though, I literally yelled when I powerbombed a guy over the ropes and out of the ring since I didnt know I could.

In the ring, the Day of Reckoning still has much more fun gameplay.

Im glad I rented, because I have had it for 3 days and I feel Im pretty much done with it. But it is still fun for wrestling fans.

The last good wrestling game THQ had anything to do w/was NO Mercy for the N64. Everything since has been graphical and roster updates. Aki rules

Superboy Prime
I like this game. Since I sold my PS2 a year ago I couldn't play SvR 2006, so this game feels fresh to me. Played it online and it's too laggy. Still a nice game.

pr1983
played it on ps2, and after getting used to the controls (which took a while), i have to say that i genuinely believe its a big improvement over the last ones...

just wish the caw had more stuff...

Rohangiga
I've got it on 360, and I think that the game is quite a big improvement from svr 06. But like 06 the stories get a bit repetitive. I really like the new crowd sections and the ultimate control moves

SVR 07 is a awesome game, the GM mode is sick and online play isnt even laggy for me smile

Discos
very good game, and greatly improved from the 2006 version.

I would have to agree with an earlier post claiming story lines are repetitive.

I have started the GM mode, hopefully it is a little tad easier to win the trophy than the 2006 version....man that was annoying.

Controls have changed (for the PS2 anyways) from the 2006 and also the original R.V.S which isnt good for my friends who come round and expect them to be the same as the ones before.

Discos - 8/10

Very true. Every wrestling game since then has been shit in comparison.

This sentence confuses me.

R8#@NG!G@
i think he means the best wrestling game ever

Sado22
more like he figured out that wrestling is fake wink

the game is really good but I hate how Khali is overpowered like hell!mad
still the game is really good and vast improvement over the last...though the stiffness of the last one is still there. I would hope that the next one would be more smooth like SD5.
overall, 9/10.

~Sado-sama

G U I T A R
Yea but khali is slow as hell...

Sado22
he's slow but whats the point. you can't even kick him the gutt and do a special like with the previous games. you do almost anything and your player gets hurt instead..........and when that wasn't bad enough, i was RVD
the best part is, i keep running around like a dumbass to avoid him, land hits here and there, try to go to the ropes to do some flying moves...but when i get there the stamina meter is red mad

~Sado

G U I T A R
lol

Burnt Pancakes
Out of the entire series, this is the worst game.
