This movie is as good as "Stay Alive", and nope, that ain't a compliment. Some of the worse dialogue i've heard in awhile(well since stay alive). Check this out, there was a moment in the movie when the antagonist saw the heroine enter her domain and said "You're here." Then the heroine answer her by saying (lol): "I'm here". I remember writing those kind of dialogue in 4th grade for english class. 1 to 10, this movie gets a 2. only saving grace was the dreaded setting and morbid atmosphere.

There were like 3 tgings i liked, the guy with the huge knife, the person being burned and the demond skinning the lady.

Just saw Silent Hill - Good first hour, which was surprisingly faithful to the game, lost itself towards the end with a bunch of needless religious undertones and half-assed attempts at surprise twists. The ending of the film definately left something to be desired.

Worth seeing.

Darth Vicious
Since ticket prices over here are $9.00 i dont recommend watching it at the movies. I agree it started good but it went downhill the second half.

JToTheP
I never played the first, so my only knowledge was the beginning of 2, and 3.

*spoilers*

Pyramid Head was scary as hell to me, and the anna slaughter scene was one of the most graphic, and best things I have ever seen.

*end spoilers*

viagra? huh?

Bardiel13
Well, I'm gonna go see it today (being a fan of the franchise, it's my duty) I'm pretty much only seeing it for Pyramid Head, but I'll see how it goes. I've seen some good, bad, and "meh..." reviews.

Gregory
I thought it was excellent, although the long exposition scene dragged the second half down a little. The entire school sequence was amazingle well-done, IMO.

1. ticket sales don't equal great movie. I'm sure most people went to see it for the same reason i did; i'm a big fan of the game.

2. my oppinions are a product of my thoughts alone. If you don't agree fine, just don't take it too personally. smile

3. to be fair, this movie has it's good points (atmosphere was awesome, and yep pyramid head was kickass) however (I) believe that the bad quality totally outnumbered the good quality. But again, for the cry babies, this is just (MY) oppinion. smile

4. any more comments?

Gregory
I liked the movie. I've already said that. But one thing that really, really bothered me, even more than the exposition ... every time the cult started chanting to "burn the witch," I flashed back to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Acting and dialogue weren't that bad, by horror movie standards. It probably helped that I didn't go in expecting very much from that department.

Most of my other complaints are the result of fanboy rage. They should have left in the nurse as an innocent victim who took a brief nap, and when she woke up, Jesus, the place is full of hideous zombie nurses--the end of her story, when the truth was revealed, might just be my favorite video game moment ever, and it's a damn shame that it didn't make it too the big screen. What they did with the police woman was okay, but what happened in the game (another of my favorite moments; that was a great game, I need to replay it) had a lot more impact. They cut out the drug storyline, but, hell, that never made much sense in the first place. They changed the main characters sex, which .. well, whatever. I suppose if Hollywood made a horror movie with a male protagonist, the world would end or something.

Maybe "excellent" was an overstatement, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

doomsday49
you know what i notice that too, alot of the horror movies now has a female as lead protagonist. anywayz, we have different issues on the movie. your concern is that the movie doesn't really stay true to the game( yeah i would've enjoyed the game-ending a hell of a lot more), but my concern is with the idiotic characters and the bad acting. I honestly see this more as a rental.

doomsday49
I usually don't like to read reviews of "experts" but this one here summed up the main issue i had with the movie. Though there are parts of it i didn't agree with. I want to post it because i'm too lazy to type all the issues down. Just the first paragraph and the second paragraph will sum up my main problem with the story.

I actually enjoyed the film in its entirety.. the morbid.. the grotesque.. the wierdness, tragedy and depression... I think the fanatics put a damper on it just a bit.. not entirely.. perhaps had they worked on the idea more it could have flowed better.. but it definately didnt make the movie horrible at all

The video game movies never seem to get cut any slack though.. its always "They didnt stick close enough to the game" or "The problem was that it was 'too' faithful to the game" and so forth..

If you love silent hill, go see it... but I dont think you'll care about it if you havent played / dont know about silent hill

7.5/10 from me

crazy_shadow
the movie had the exact same monsters, music, and town graphics as the video games. So if you've played the video games, you'll love the movie. And as all the silent hills, they all have different stories to them, so does the movie. it's own story with the same effects. I loved it and I want to see it a second time in the theatres!!

LanceWindu
Saw it yesterday...

Without going indepth, the movie sucked. The first hour was basically the lead character running around shouting "SHARON!" That may stay true to the game, but it doesn't work in a movie. It dragged on an on, and the dialogue was horrible. During serious scenes people in the audience were laughing because of how shitty the writing was.

I give it a 3/10.

Darth Vicious
zim sorry but I like the games but the movie sucked. As far as B movies go they still suck, ive seen Scarecrow and that is one of the crappiest movies ever however Castle Freak i liked.

Hmm....I actually liked the movie alot. I never played the game, but i did watch my friend played the first part until the end and it always creep me out. The movie did the same, It scared the shit out of me. The scenery were true to the game, I hear the director was also a huge Silent Hill fan, so it was very much like the game. Though i can understand from people who didnt play the game, that the plot itself must of been off but to us that have seen or played the game, it couldnt have been more accurate to our tastes. The special effects were awesome. I definitely reccommend it and give it an 8/10.

*SPOILERS*

i love the scool, and hospital alot. My fav. scene were the nurses. It looked like they were about to break into some Michael Jackson thriller moves. And when they were slicing each other neck off, that was just awesome. The other scenes were just too gory for me.

allofyousuckkk
does it have the same ending as the game...playing the game is on myto do list...if it doesn't would someone fill me in?

I thought the movie rocked and the games rock too its jsut one of them movies i could go and watch over and over agen im off to see it again cant wait even thoi seen it once lol

but i agree with windu at the start she did run around endlessly shoutin SHARON! but apart from that it was kool and the gory scenes make it stand out from most of the other movies which try really hard to make there movies scary so id giv it 8/10 aswell smile

I am going to make this simple:

I loved:

The monsters
The gore
The gamelike flow of the storyline

I hated:

The actual storyline
The ending

Unanswered Questions:

Why would the husband EVER stop looking for his missing wife and child?

If the main character is teleported to Silent Hill, why couldnt she be teleported back when they helped the evil girl get her revenge? The evil girl obviously knows how and there is a way to get out of Silent Hill since she dropped the baby off at the orphanage.

If the cult people have never been to the CORE and back alive .. how did they know where the CORE was? what the room number was?

How come the little girl was deemed a witch? Was it just because she was fatherless ? If so why does she have these super demonic powers now ? ?

Zilverz
Also, the movie played the main theme song over at tense moments. Some movies only do it at the end .. like SAW etc.. but through the whole film ... it just made me think of Suspiria

hily
I loved it, however I was enthralled with both saw and saw II so I was bound to like it to begin with.

As far as being true to the game I have only recently bought Silent Hill the game and plan to play all four since seeing the movie. However, I have a friend who knows a lot about the game and thought it was great. (His review can be found at: rottentomatoes.com/vine/showthread.php?p=8468352#post8468352 )

There is a point to the dialogue, the simplistic sentences and unemotionalness...contribute to the emptyness feeling of the ash world in the film

Zilverz's Unanswered quesitons:
1. sure a husband wouldnt stop looknig that quickly (thou its not clear how much time passed) however when u lose a loved one theres a point where u have to move on

2. Who would want to teleport her back? Alyessa (the burned girl) "made a deal with the devil" this led sharon to be left at the orphange . I think the only person with the power to teleport is the "devil" and why would she care to send rose back? besides its a good cliff hanger.

3. Its purgatory its pretty damn supernatural betcha they could feel the evil logic doesnt really have to apply to the t.

4. She was deemed a witch because she was fatherless. She has these super demonic powers because she "made a deal with the devil" remeber how the little girl in the core was telling the story and was talking about how she came to alyessa?
"i have many names" the devil the grim reaper whatever you want to call her she gave alyessa the powers, but its really not all that supernatural being as they arent in the real world.

Hily, thank you for your attempts at answering some of the mysteries. Unfortunately, none of the responses satisfied me. I think the only way to save this story, would be to make a sequel and clean up the mess.

Furthering question #2:

For a girl hell bent to get revenge on the cult because of there terrible acts on the innocent. The girl sure is a hypocrit by dragging the innocent to her world and just leaving them there after they have served there purpose. How can you have that strong of a drive/conviction if you dont show it in other elements.

hily
the burned girl wanted revenge for the cult's acts on her however prolly doesnt have the power to send them back. her drive and conviction was hatered of those who hurt her not necessarily saving innoocent people.

the devil im sure doesnt care who dies and wants to make sure those in the cult who did die in the fire realise that they are dead. And since she had different motives im not sure shes a hypocrite

LizzyT123
hmm, well I really did like this movie. I didnt' really get the ending, but I thought this movie was gonna SUCK ASS. But it was actually pretty good. I give it a 8/10 smile

the resident evil movies sucked. didnt capture the atmosphere of the game at all. hopefulyl silent hill will be different

a little help on the way.

The cult burned Alyssa because they thought her a devil spawn. While being burned, the fireplace turned over setting the hotel on fire (ie: the special room 111) Alyssa made it out alive and was put in the hospital (the core) where she met the darkness. The darkness gave her the powers for revenge, thus striking the town ablaze. Sharon was created when the power was given to Alyssa (splitting good and evil). The fire must have spread afterwards and the city was evacuated. Since all the buildings were in too much need of repair and so many people lost lives, no one would dare go to the toen. Sharon was taken to the Brahams Orphanage to protect her from the cult and, since she was part of both worlds, the streets leading out of town was closed by the darkness in order to keep the cult and anyone else dumb enough to get caught, in. If you go to the website for the movie, you would see the Mayor of Brahams daughter went missing when she and some friends ventured too far into Silent Hill on a dare. He then closed off the town and placed barracades to keep others out. When Sharon had the walking dreams, Rose took her to Silent Hill to correct the problem. They were met by Officer Cybil when Rose stopped at a gas station for directions. Cybil had a previous problem where a man abducted a young boy and took him to Silent Hill and dropped him in a mine. She followed in and emerged to apprehend Mrs DeSilva thinking she would kill Sharon. When Rose and Sharon made it through their turmoil, they ended up still being in the spirit world when they got home. You will see Sharon look to the camera and smile before going to her room, thus showing that she was inhabited by either the darkness or Alyssa or both when they were in the church at the finale of the cult. Mr DeSilva goes to look outside because he is startled and notices the SUV parked in the driveway. This will hopefully lead to a sequel with Mr DeSilva as the antagonist, as he tries to find his wife and adopted daughter, while dodging the police and another world full of surprises. Hopefully the director will have read feedbacks from audience and put a better finish to the sequel (if there is one). Time will tell.

If there are any more questions, feel free to PM me.

Zilverz
those were some good explainations. I even further dislike the films storyline.

The grim reaper finally gets revenge on the cult who was responsible for crippling Alyssa, many years ago, with the help of mrs desilva and now her and sharon are going to get tourmented ? It doesnt make sense.. There is no reason for it and doesnt posses a logical flow. Why is mrs desilva not furious at the end? She is acting all calm.. when she should be back at the core cussin homegirl out.

srankmissingnin
The camera work, lighting and set design are top notch.

The acting, dialogue and story line are among the worst in the history of man. When you watch a movie and starting thinking that maybe Keanu Reeves isn't such a bad actor something is seriously wrong.

... and the Silent Hill theme was only played during the closing credits

Brodrick
I saw a few people in here giving it bad reviews. I cannot stand when people come in and say 'the movie sucked' and then don't justify why they disliked it. So just to the people who haven't seen it, Don't listen to the children in here. They probably just didn't understand the movie and hate it for that reason.

... because it was an incredible complex and innovative story line roll eyes (sarcastic)

I really liked the movie. For one thing it was very straight-forward, and I never felt cheated by the vague ending. In fact, if anything it helped the movie because different people can come up with different and interesting conclusions. In my opinion it took a lot of guts for the director to leave that kind of ending, and it made me feel satisfied.

And by far the monsters were the highlight of the movie. Some of the best visual imagination I have seen in a long while. And very unsettling too. Those screaming ashen children freaked the hell out of me when the first one's yellow piercing eyes showed and it emitted that scream. God what a freakish scream. Hearing it in surround sound at the theater only made it even more scarier. My girl gripped my arm when that happened. And I loved/dreaded each time that foghorn sounded, because each time something cool would happen, like that Janitor guy. And Pyramid Head was truly great too. He was just in the movie long enough to have two great scenes, and short enough to leave you wanting more. The only thing that bummed me was what happened to the Anna character, but then again I have a thing for redheads =P

cropsy_is_god
I hated the film. I left before it finished it was that bad.

excuse me was that necessary? If you like the movie fine, but don't call people who disagree with you children. This board is about opinion. Perhaps being such an "adult" as you are, you can, maybe, give some insight to us "children" on why this movie is such a winner.

I liked this movie, but some parts were pretty cheesy. I've never played the game though, so I can't compare it to the movie.

I liked the movie. I guess it all depends on taste. Im really a horror movie buff so I know what it expect. The atmosphere was great but the acting was Ok. I found it to be a great horror movie. The story is ok because it somewhat stayed true to the game. I give it a 7 or 8. As far as others who say its bad, thats fine its your opinion but I find that it was better than many movies critics praise. I never truly base by opinion on a critics rating. Roger Ebert gave Daredevil a 5/5 so I really don't care what his opinion is.

um, okay, this is no competition, we are just here to discuss the movie. I think we really should just stop with that now.

systemshock2
I thought I would discuss the monsters in this film and give my interpretation as to their origins and why they were what they were. I've never played any of the games, so if there's any history related to these monsters outside of the movie that I don't know about please let me know. It'd be interesting to know what others think they were too.

The Ash Children: I think these were the children who made fun of Alessa, and once Alessa turned Silent Hill into her own world turned them into these screaming ashen things.

That coocon monster who spews out acid: I think this was suppose to be a representation of Alessa and all of her skin graft patches. I know it's a stretch, but looking at the monster it seems like it's forcibly trying to get free of the skin that's on top of it, and I think this represents Alessa being forced to have those skin grafts on her after she was burned.

That barbed wire monster: obviously this is the janitor that molested and/or raped Alessa. I think he was wrapped in barbed wire in such a disfigured manner that if you think about, it'll be physically impossible for him to ever have sex or jerk himself off. Maybe Alessa wanted him to never have that gratification again? And the way he has a bandage over his eyes implies that he might have lost his vision too, signifying that Alessa won't even give him the pleasure of ever seeing a woman again.

Pyramid Head: this is the only monster that I can't put my finger on anything. He's so unique, and there's no other character in the film that somehow relates to him. I can't find any meaning to his pyramid head, or the apron made of skin, or the large knife, or those freaky cockroaches. I think in this case it was all just made up with no purpose behind it.

The nurses: these monsters might be a loose interpretations of the nurse that decided to get a quick peek at Alessa. IMO they all have wrapped bandages completely covering their faces because this signifies Alessa's jealousy at how pretty the nurse was, and how after the accident Alessa will never be. When we finally see that the real nurse has no pupils, a cracked face, and bleeds blood this further acknowledges my theory of how Alessa purposely ruined her beauty.

Anyways feel free to comment on what you think these monsters meant. I also think that some of them might mean nothing and were just put there for fun, but it's always a lot more funner to try and relate things.

hily
i thought the cockroaches had human characteristics which could just make them the rest of the people in silent hill ones she may not have had contact with so they just became something insignificant, like a roach

I thought of something else that might relate to these Ash Children being the school children. I remember that during the flashback scene they would all point to Alessa in the middle of the classroom and yell "Burn witch burn". It's funny now that she would instead later on make them burn forever.

That's a good angle, having those townspeople literally become as insignificant as a roach. What a sorry way to end up, especially for that one that was squished by the cop lol.

might as well be squished by a hot cop thou!

I had a chance to see the movie again, this time at the dollar theater, and I noticed something that I didn't pick up before. All of the monsters come out after that horn blares and the world turns black, yet there's one monster, the acid-spewing one that looks like it's trying to rip out of its skin, that appeared during the regular time. I wonder if that's a mistake or something, since other scenes clearly established that as soon as the night turns into day, the monsters disintegrate.

This movie was actually good, but the only thing I didnt like was how they replaced the guy from the Silent Hill game with a woman thinking she can get her daughter back. I really hated that about the movie, but on the other hand the monsters seemed cool.

yeah, I thought the main character in the game was a guy.......Oh well!

systemshock2
I liked that the main character was a woman. It just made more sense considering the genre. IMO it made it much more suspenseful to have a woman experience the horror and constantly scream and yell and run away. That one scene where she just collapses by the lockers and begins sobbing really did it for me. It really made me sympathize with her. As opposed to a guy character, whom we as an audience probably wouldn't get too much of a response out of.

LizzyT123
yeah, I guess. I did sympathize for her, but I do have to say, I'd rather stay true to the game if I did play it. Thats why I was so disappointed with the Resident Evil movie. I hated it

This sucks. I tried to find the soundtrack to the movie today and apparently there's none. I did some research on it and apparently that's because most of the music in the movie is taken straight from the game, so I guess that didn't warrant a CD soundtrack or something. At least I wish they could've released one anyway, even if it was just a collection from the various games. Oh well.

Some of the songs that stood out, at least the one's I would've looked forward to in the CD, would've been:

- that banjo type song that begins right at the opening credits
- that male vocal song that plays as Sharon is about to jump off the cliff
- Alessa's main theme, which is that piano theme
- and a whole bunch of eerie atmospheric music that plays during most of the scenes

Hopefully the DVD will have some solo audio track or something.

I am a gamer and I have played the games for Silent Hill and honestly I was disappointed at this movie. If any of you have played the games I will say this: The characters they used were AWESOME, they did very well, but as far as everything else I almost fell asleep.
I definitely won't be buying this movie when it comes out on video.

yeah, I thought it was pretty cool

I'd say the best part of the movie was the sound. That, and I loved the transitions between the two worlds. If you didn't like the game, or never played it, a lot of the dialog and stuff (as mentioned) is going to sound very dry, but as a person who's played it, I thought it was gold.

does anyone have any information on the soundtrack for the movie.
