Okay, let's see what everyone else opinion on this...according to historians the first Americans were the Paleo-Indians who migrated from Asia to North America. This created some disputes as to the claims that certain Native Americans tribes were here first. So, were did the first Americans came from? Asia or what you think?

Let's get this straigh before venturing into 1492 and 1776......

Nice topic for a debate stick out tongue . IMO The theory that the natives came across the Bering Strait has my vote, becuase It's the only logical explanation I've heard.

WrathfulDwarf
Don't forget that there is the theory that vikings came to the Americas way before Columbus. Here is where it gets interesting...did they really encounter the natives? Why are the no traces of Viking culture recorded?

Fatal Smoke
Even if they vikings came before columbus, the theory of the natives being true, would mean that they came hundreds to thousands of years before the vikings even..

Janus Marius
Yeah, the commonly accepted version is that the natives came across in droves during the last Ice Age or so. The vikings supposively came around 800 A.D.

American History is long and tedious stick out tongue

A few religious English people head over to a new found land; they shoot some native Americans, they kill some "Witches"; they revolt against the English; They fight each other; they fight some other countries...

Today...

stick out tongue

I'm not sure what to think about the whole, are the Americans in America now, true Americans, because technically they weren't there 1st, I'm not sure how the 'Native Americans' got there.

Why are the no traces of Viking culture recorded? I don't think they encountered the natives. The vikings only went so far inland, not far from the coast in the north and far east of Canada. I doubt they'd encounter many natives, and the few tools or remains of buildings are the only indication of them being here. And since there aren't many of 'em, I don't think they were here long.

Captain REX
I choose to believe that the first Native Americans were the offspring of those men that crossed the Bering Strait about 10,000 years ago.

Vikings...ah yes, the Vikings. They seemed to have landed on American soil, yes, but I don't believe they found the place to be hospitable enough to stay. That, or it was far too far away for the Viking to have wanted to establish some sort of living here. They went as far as Iceland and Greenland before thinking 'This is WAY too far away,' and even on Ice/Greenland they had a hard time, I thought.

Janus Marius
One of the most convincing reasons why we think the Native Americans are descendants of Asians who crossed the land bridge ages ago is because some were born with a small blue mark on their back (discoloration- I don't know the exact nature, and I read the article years ago, so this may sound a bit incomplete), which is also common in children first born in central Asia.

I think that that's reasonable, but... on a serious note...We founded your Navy!

Are there any records in Canada of Viking travels? I'm sure they must build something or left something...

Capt_Fantastic
The early nordic people's did come here long before Columbus. However, the first people's are, historically, reported to be those native "Asian" tribes that first crossed the barring straights, hunting and following game.

There are numerous artifacts, all along the northern coast, found that indicate that nordic people's arrived here long before the more southern Europeans. As well as some artifacts, if I recall correctly, from the viking camps found in the nordic countries.

Modern history teaches us to believe that the people who first welcomed European religious fanatics off the boats saw them as divine, but they walked up to them without a weapon drawn because they knew they weren't "divine". We were certainly NOT saviors from across the waters. They were just people, like them. And they knew that.

There is a great theory, but forth by whom I do not know, but Jared Diamond discussed it in Guns, Germs, and Steel that Polyensians made it across the pacific to some isolated areas of South America. The clearly had maritime technology, as it was the same genetic linkages taht settled Australia and th other pacific islands. If I remember correctly, these linages did not spred much.

But, I think that the bulk of the modern natives came across the Bering Strait.

It's not a theory at all. L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland is currntly the only authenticated Viking settlement in North America although there were probably others.

And the Vikings did interact with Canadian First nations, at first it was friendly, then the natives became so aggresive that the vikings left.

The mormons believe that a Jewish guy sailed a boat here from Israel in 600 something BC and his descendants split into two groups. One was pure and good, the other nasty and evil. The bad guys killed all but one of the good guys and he carved their rules into golden plaques, written in Egyptian heiroglyphics, and buried them under a tree in upstate New York. These plaques were later found by Joe Smith in his back yard and he founded the Mormon religion.

*pay no attention to Mr. Smith's criminal record and his history of scamming people for their money*
