What's so great about Mona Lisa?

I mean...I know it was done by Da Vinci and how famous its gotten...What I don't know is...WHY so? What is so great about the painting that its revered SO highly? Was it the history behind it? The artistic techniques or the apparent model for the portrait?

I believe it's something to do with the way that DaVinci has depicted her face; the expression mainly, espeicaly in her eyes and the corner of her mouth. And something to do with the background but I can't remember what, he did something similar in the Virgin of the Rocks, using blue smoky shadows I think. But I can't really remember.

confused at the time it was a perfect picture since fine art started wit daavinci
