Authority Respect Thread
Notes:
1. This thread is broken into sections based on the characters.
2. I don’t consider the Kev story arc nor the Lobo crossovers to be continuity. They’re hilarious and cool, but not really believable. So there’s 1 scan from Kev in this thread but that’s it.
3. This is merely feats. For anyone unfamiliar with these characters, I’d recommend picking up something of The Authority. They’re Wildstorm comics (owned by DC) and are sweet as hell.
4. Enjoy! This is how a respect thread should be done. Many others are very good too, and there’s plenty that are better than this thread, but some are woefully bereft of substance.
5. I’m missing issues 1-6 of Volume 1 (The Relentless arc). There are a few cool feats (like the Doctor telekinetically holding Italy) but every other major Authority arc should be covered here.
6. With Spider-Man and now The Authority, I’m trying to cover everyone that I know a lot about. Next on the list are Alan Scott and/or The Tick, but I have a ways to go before I have enough on them to make a respect thread.
Part I. Apollo
Part II. The Midnighter
Part III. Angie (The Engineer)
Part IV. Jack Hawksmoor
Part V. Swift
Part VI. The Doctor
Part VII. Jenny

I. Apollo – Basically a Superman type. Uber-charged, he’s probably on par with the big guy, but otherwise a bit lower.
Clearing the moon with his heat-vision. The 2nd scan shows how it was basically spreading over the entire moon.

Running through the head of a Giant Man lookalike, killing him instantly
http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=58vb.jpg
Generally being a badass. The 2nd scan is particularly cool because he incinerates a massive group of super-types simply by emitting an aura of heat.

Taking out a series of fighter jets
http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=101io.jpg
Crashes into a space station with a “docking bay the size of a continent”. Judging by that, it’s probably the size of a small planet. He doesn’t destroy it completely, but the size of the explosion is telling and impressive.

After alluding to Superman’s “faster than a speeding bullet” he proceeds to streak across a single panel multiple times, killing a bunch of giant-alien-things.

A fight with a telepath who gains the strength of those he controls. By this point, he had taken over roughly 70% of the population of Earth, and had previously punched Apollo around the world (before he was charged a bunch). So saying he’s Class Million+ probably isn’t an exaggeration. Apollo also lifts and topples a skyscraper that was taller than any building in Los Angeles.

B. The Midnighter – Can run millions of combat variations through his head before a fight even starts, and has implants that allow him to see the enhancements other people have. Also has slightly enhanced strength/healing/agility/etc. Generally just a supreme badass.
Fighting a group of young supervillians sent to create havoc. He kills some, dodges others, then communicates with The Carrier to send them all to their graves. He leaves one alive so he can lop his head off.

Not a great scene for MN’er, but here it’s revealed that he has a backup heart. The one Seth ripped out was later replaced and healed by Angie and the Doctor.

This is an extended fight scene from the recent Revolution arc. I’ve skipped the non-fight pages. In it, an evil MN’er, controlled by Henry Bendix, beats the crap out of Apollo, Jack, and The Doctor (the new one). He uses a robot for part of it, but was beating Apollo even without it. He uses a bit of outside help with the “Door” and robot but it’s still a freakishly good feat for a guy who’s supposed to be closer to street-level.

III. Angie – Almost like a GL, except with liquid machinery. She can build nearly anything her advanced intelligence can think of.
Growing a replacement set of lungs so she could breathe in an inhabitable atmosphere, then creating some big guns out of her hands to fight a giant-turd-thing.

V. Swift – Honestly, Swift is cool but not terribly powerful. She’s like Hawkgirl with a bit better flight speed and maneuverability, and no mace.
Flying straight through brick walls, killing people as she goes.

This fight is actually with an evil Doctor against the rest of the Authority. Honestly, the only thing that keeps him from turning them into flowers in the opening seconds of the fight is pure PIS. Still, it’s a decent example of his power(s). He time travels for the first time, too, among other things.

VII. Jenny – Since neither has a ton of ‘screen-time’ as it were, this is both Jenny Sparks and Jenny Quantum. Jenny Sparks is like Electro x 5. Jenny Quantum is too powerful to accurately quantify at the moment. The first feat is Sparks. The rest are Quantum.
Jenny Sparks electrocutes the brain of an organism roughly the size of a continent. The carrier is the size of a city, so you can see the difference in just the Carrier compared to the brain in the first panel.

Good job Digi.

Thanks guys.
Barring some old Stormwatch stuff for a few of them, and the "Secret History of the Authority" run (and my missing Relentless arc), this is pretty much every major feat of the Authority. They're still relatively young as teams go, but I counted just over 100 scans...so I was happy with the outcome.
And I prefer this method rather than slowly stretching out the scans over a bunch of pages. This format makes the thread easier to navigate, even if subsequent pages will be rather boring in comparison.
The only "major" feats that aren't here (that I know of) are:
-Jack wearing the city of Tokyo as body armor (from Stormwatch)
-The Doctor telekinetically holding Italy in place while the rest of the world turned
-The Doctor turnng a swarm of superhumans into trees
-Engineer creating a field of microscopic blades capable of cutting someone at the molecular level.
(the last 3 are all from Relentless)

I'm thinking I'll have bump this a good deal for it to be noticed since a lot of people don't read Wildstorm.

Depends. The Doctor should win, but he's constantly written as a flake, so it's not unreasonable to assume Strange would be the more disciplined of the two and figure something out. At the very least, Strange could counter-act his control over reality on himself, so The D couldn't turn him into a ham sandwich in the opening seconds of the fight. Strange does have experience countering reality control (IG anyone?).
Still, The Doctor has more overall power and versatility. Written to potential, he should win every time. In reality it would probably be more like 6/10 though.

Hey, I do think this thread is good, but I think the last Doctor Feat is actually a Jack Hawksmoor one, judging from Jack's reaction and nature of the feat.

I can see how it could be seen that way, but the purple glow gives it away. That's The D's trademark color, and it's also doubtful that even Jack could hurl the Eiffel Tower into space. It's also out of context with just that 1 scan, and I think I remember it showing the Doctor doing something to that effect the page before it.

Thanks. If only the Authority had more comics....the only shortcoming is that between 7 of them, there's less available feats than for most regular characters.
But I like to "front-load" my respect threads (the Spidey one I did is the same way). I'll add more scans as new comics come out, but it's nice to be able to see 90% of the stuff on page 1 without having to hunt for it.

Right. And in this case, there's still a lot of people who know nothing about the Authority. Lots of threads are just excuses for fanboys to flock to their character's best feats and talk about them (I admit to being partially guilty with the Spidey one as well), but in this case I feel like at least a few people will know more about the Authority because of me.
And I deliberately tried to be less biased than usual. Swift's not too impressive, so I didn't post much for her. And to be honest, the only time I can remember the Authority legitimately getting owned was by Seth (and I still don't understand why Jeroen couldn't turn him into flowers). So I wasn't avoiding posting embarassing losses for them to make them seem sweeter (like I had to occasionally with Spidey...especially with some of his early issues...ASM 1-50 aren't terribly flattering for him).
DigiMark007
A Note On the Scans:
They work best for me if I maximize the window it's in and refresh the image. Otherwise, they don't appear as big as they could be.

I bring donations!
First, the page prior to the one I commented on. Seems you where right.
A pretty funny Doctor feat, too.
And now, Jack verus evil Kansas.
First, WHAT Jack is fighting.
Oh no! A full air strike force isn't even denting it!
After literally hundreds of super humans attack it, Jenny takes her shot.
Which does...Jack all.
But...What is this?
Why, its Tokyo! And its totally owning a genocidal global threat!
And thus, Jack walks into the sunset, where pretty much every superhuman of the day failed.
And, later, the molecular blades from Angie.

The entire Cpt. Atom arc was amazingly suspect (and that's being nice). The writer's obviously knew nothing about the Wildstorm universe. Not only were characters not written to scale power-wise, but they were totally off on a lot of the characters' personalities as well. Various sites have found dozens of continuity errors with the series as well, showing that none of the writers did their homework. It was basically an extended Cpt. Atom fanboy orgasm with no regard for the continuity of WS.
If you liked it, that's cool, but I'm rather ashamed that it happened.

QUESTION!
Digi mentioned the engineer creating blades that could cut on the molecular level - awesome!
Could they, possibly, cut apart Wolverine's molecularly bonded adamantium? If they can cut molecular bonds, it would seem to follow....

No he's not. Referring to it as simply suspect was actually incredibly generous on his part. I prefer the term "piece of shit" myself. That's not a dig on CA either but why should a guy who clearly knows squat about the WS universe and characters get to write the story that reboots their universe? That'd be like golem370 writing Infinite Crisis.

I put it in the same category I put Our Worlds at War. OWAW was a decent Superman story but a lame DCU story. Same principle applies to Armageddon.

Holy double post, Batman!!! shock
DigiMark007
Me saying that the Cpt. Atom arc was crap isn't because I think they wrote Atom wrong. It's because they completely butchered a number of WS characters, both with power sets as well as personalities. Majestic's reactions were way off, and the Authority seemed like parodies of themselves....in addition to the continuity errors (I wish I saved the site I read that listed a few dozen faults with it).
So yeah, your boy's sweet batdude (CA, that is). It's just a shame he had his finest hour at the expense of some crappy WS writing.

Can't the "renovating wave" created by Jack Hawksmoor in NYC durind "Street Life" issue be concideted as a feat? Of course, there's no destructive stuff- just getting the whole city (or just the Bronx?) "better makeup"- repairing broken windows, cracked bricks and pavements, repainting walls and so on...
And as for the Eiffel Tower feat- couldn't that be an example of teamwork?%) I mean Jack and Doctor could do that stuff together- with Doctor's power protecting the whole construct from melting in the atmosphere (that explains energy surrounding, cause Jack's powers is enough to lift the tower from ground and throw it, but Doctor helped him to aim correctly with the whole thing).
Charlotte DeBel
Also "renovations" made by Hawksmoor to St. Petersburg (Scorched Earth) and LA (Godhead arc) to cause massive flood in these cities are also can be counted as impressive feats.
"Minor feats of Jack" like blowing up gas pipes right behind the enemy (Earth Inferno) can also be counted (if dodging bullets is taken into his active as a feat).

Yes, renovating a city is a feat. Feel free to post it if you can.
And the Doctor did that Eiffel Tower thing on his own. Jack comments on it, but there's no on-panel evidence whatsoever that Jack did anything to help. It's glowing purple (The D's trademark) and hurled into space. Simple as that, and well within Doctor's power range.

Relentless? That confused me when I was looking for them. The first arc was the Circle, second was ShiftShips (where that feat came from). At least thats what the the two different four part issues were called

Meh, the collection I owned of issues 1-6 of Volume 1 was called "Relentless". Maybe they go by different names individually.

I'm sure you can't waitt be posting all the amazing Authority feats from issue 1 of the relaunch...

New stuff, all from the "Captain Atom: Armageddon" arc.
I dislike the story....the Authority are written as immoral villians. Granted, they have a looser sense of morality than most heroes, but the "kill first, ask questions later" mentality was turned into nigh-parody in CA: Armageddon.
Still, here's the stuff, since it's canon. I'll also be adding stuff to the initial posts on page 1 when I get the chance (including stuff from others, unless they object).
...
I've also decided that the new Doctor still rules. I miss Jeroen, but Habib is growing on me a ton.
...
The Doctor (the new one):
Casually walking a year into the future. No spells, speed force barriers to knock down, etc. Just a thought and he's there.
http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=26ug0.jpg
Just in case anyone thinks a Superman-type could challenge The Doctor, here he is freezing Majestic in place while drinking a soda:
http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=27bm4.jpg
...and he also states how easy it would be for him to finish off Captain Atom:
http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=28yf9.jpg
...
Midnighter -
CA saying he's never seen someone without powers move as fast as MN'er (which would include, presumably, Batman

):
http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=25hr9.jpg
...
The Engineer -
"Curing" CA's problem at the sub-atomic level. It worked too, until CA came into contact with the other Void entity.
http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=14ig9.jpg
http://img258.imageshack.us/my.php?image=15jd0.jpg
Here's a fight between Angie and CA. Angie was actually getting the better of it until Grifter's cheap shot. It's hard to say who would've won teh fight, but this was Void-upgraded CA, so it's reasonable to assume she's at least at normal CA's level, possibly higher.
http://img524.imageshack.us/my.php?image=16ct6.jpg
http://img240.imageshack.us/my.php?image=17zn8.jpg
http://img240.imageshack.us/my.php?image=18yh7.jpg
http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=19ow7.jpg
....
Apollo -
I feel like I need to say some things here...
Apollo "loses" the first encounter with CA. He was dominating the exchange, but then CA tricked him into going near the sun so that CA could use his matter manip to give Apollo a fatal dose of his own power.
Keeping that in mind...
About a page after "losing" to CA, Apollo ignores a direct blast from him. The same one that floored Majestic earlier in the arc.
http://img261.imageshack.us/my.php?image=21kv8.jpg
Here's where they trigger the Void inside CA and everything is destroyed. But we see that Apollo's heat vision can crack CA ultra-tough skin:
http://img240.imageshack.us/my.php?image=22on5.jpg
So.
In normal circumstances (away from the sun), all we see is CA getting tooled, even with his upgrades.
Apollo > CA??? Maybe.
Apollo > Majestic?? Hehe...I won't go that far.
But Apollo has a horrible rep around here. He deserves better.

Hey, I just post the scans.
Besides, Atom seemingly could only use that matter manip thing effectively near the sun. He had to trick Apollo into going there to pull it off. So, say Apollo doesn't go to the sun, all I saw was him laying a beatdown on Atom, and Atom narrating to himself "He's really going to kill me..." And he did crack CA's skin, and was good to go only about 2-3 pages later after that sun trick.
But don't worry. I'm just trying to irk you a bit (

). The point was just that Apollo deserves way more respect than he normally gets on KMC.

finally read the second issue. Superheros in the real world. I'd be more excited if I wasn't so bored of the concept already.
Also it's apparently Jenny Quarx instead of Jenny Quantum now. Don't know why Morrison felt the need to change her last name. Morrison kept trying to force how violent Midnighter is buy having him say he was constantly throughout his dialogue..
All in all meh. I'm not going to be picking up the next issue..whenever that one decides to come out.
DigiMark007
I like to wait until they package them in 5-6 issue arcs. It's better than reading it little-by-little, which is my only problem with TPB's.
But since the entire Wildstorm universe got "remade" by Void, I guess things like Jenny's new name and random other sh*t can be played off as acceptable retcons.
I'll wait and see. 2 issues isn't enough to judge, even with how bad #1 was.

Juggs, don't post the issue. I'll have to delete it.
Anyway:
I'm in the process of putting together literally EVERYTHING of the Authority. This thread shipped with quite a bit missing (even though there's still a lot). It'll still be a period of months, but you can expect it eventually. But the additions help a lot, and save me the trouble of tracking them down myself.

Joking, yes? Are you saying that Cpt. Atom destroyed the entire universe, when it was clearly Void that meshed its two halves together, sent Atom away, and "remade" the WS universe?
Other than that, upgrade or not, he still only beat Apollo with a plot device...on equal footing, it was clear Apollo was his superior.
But really, I've had the Armageddon discussion 1 too many times with Cpt. Atom fans. We really just need to let it drop.

And no argument with most of your points. But what I said in my last post stands. The uber stuff was Void....CA had some nice showings, but Majestic was depowered at the time and he beat Apollo with a plot device and even seemed to be losing to Angie until Grifter's intervention.

No problem. And thanks for the additions.
Same to juggs, but it looks like you posted almost the entire issue. Try to narrow it to just the feats, since we can't have entire issue-posting here. But those scans seem pertinent enough that it's not a big deal.
Thanks to both. I'm making slow progress on my re-launch of this thread (Jenny's the only one I've compiled an entire feat compendium for so far) but Charlotte's making the Hawksmoor section a lot easier.

Yeah, same issue as Jack's feat. I'll have to look to see which story arc it was from, but I'll get back to you on that.
