Seriously? Superboy Primes retcon punch is what they used to explain the anomaly.

Before that, it was never clear. Superman tried his first "sundip" to try and regain his powers after final night and then fought a magical enemy who tried to posses him and may have altered him..etc.

DC couldn't really explain how he came about, or even how he became regular Supes again, so they used Superboy Primes reality altering punches to explain it.

Damn this thread keeps me coming back for more.

This is about when I stopped reading comics. I never really understood the "Energy" superman. Pretty much something turned him into energy and then he somehow got turned back to normal? I know I liked the red/blue ones, but then sort of just stopped reading comics for a few years.
